this. calories are measured by dehydrating and burning the food, releasing stored energy. amino acids are not metabolized like carbs or fats. excess aminos can be stored in/as fat but this is a fairly energy inefficient process compared to just consuming fats and carbs directly

Not really. It exposes them better, but your progress is going to be worse at lower bodyfats. 15-20 is optimal for most natties. 10-15 for looking good.

If you are a regular gym junkie with 20% bodyfat trying to get leaner your body will absolutely not get rid of a single ounce of muscle because you did cardio. It will 100% burn only fat.
I'm not saying doing cardio will kill your gains or not to do cardio at all, that would be stupid. I play rugby union and league so get plenty cario in and it's really beneficial in numerous ways.
But to lose fat you need to be in a deficit and being in a deficit means you can't gain weight/muscle. It's not like you can just eat at maintenance, do cardio and lift to get huge and lean

i disagree. Muscle gain and fat loss are not mutually exclusive processes. Your body will fill its metabolic needs with stored fat. It is however much slower than focusing on one or the other, and it becomes progressively slower the leaner you get. “Gaintaining” is possible, it just requires a lot more patience and discipline than people realize. Much easier to lean bulk with a very minor surplus, say ~250kcal, for a longer period of time, makes for a much shorter and less aggressive cut.

Your body gains muscle when it has protein in a surplus. Your body loses weight when it has calories in a deficit. These are not mutually exclusive.

The concept of "bulking" came from the bodybuilding drug world. If you're natural muscle gain is so slow that all you need to do is consistently eat "enough" protein and calories and you will grow. I'm a former track & field athlete, jumper/sprinter, Just turned 42. I'm a 5 year survivor of a stage IV cancer Lance Armstrong style. I've had my right nut cut off, my head cut open twice to remove masses, gamma radiation was beamed across the back of my skull and was poised nearly to death by toxic chemo drugs. Upon discharge from the hospital, I weighed 140lbs at 6' and got winded walking up a flight of stairs. I'm up to 163lbs, 10-12% BF, I can do 13 very strict pull ups, and when I'm out road biking I burn past teenagers. So don't want to hear your bullshit excuses. The best advice I can give regarding training as you age is you have to train smarter. Listen to your body, it will tell you what you can and can't do. The progressive overload should be very gradual. Setting goals is nice, but trying to achieve a 500lb bench and all that stuff shouldn't be a priority anymore. Staying overall healthy and just feeling good should be the primary goal from here to the end.
Cutting is shit as well. Really you should just do what people did before the internet made everyone autistic. Just eat well a well rounded diet and do a mixture of weights and cardio year round. Stop following methodology that is specifically designed for bodybuilding shows.
I bench 3.5 pl8 and run a 20 minute 5k at the same time. Spinning your wheels is going back and forth between being fat and then spending half a year cutting and looking like another shrivelled low test prune because you are eating too little and not doing cardio.

Is gaining 20 pounds an acceptable bulk? I plan to bulk and cut between 170 and 150 forever. I bulked up to 200 before and was strong but pretty fricking fat. i disagree. Muscle gain and fat loss are not mutually exclusive processes. Your body will fill its metabolic needs with stored fat. It is however much slower than focusing on one or the other, and it becomes progressively slower the leaner you get. “Gaintaining” is possible, it just requires a lot more patience and discipline than people realize. Much easier to lean bulk with a very minor surplus, say ~250kcal, for a longer period of time, makes for a much shorter and less aggressive cut.

Your body gains muscle when it has protein in a surplus. Your body loses weight when it has calories in a deficit. These are not mutually exclusive.

I'm a former track & field athlete, jumper/sprinter, Just turned 42. I'm a 5 year survivor of a stage IV cancer Lance Armstrong style. I've had my right nut cut off, my head cut open twice to remove masses, gamma radiation was beamed across the back of my skull and was poised nearly to death by toxic chemo drugs. Upon discharge from the hospital, I weighed 140lbs at 6' and got winded walking up a flight of stairs. I'm up to 163lbs, 10-12% BF, I can do 13 very strict pull ups, and when I'm out road biking I burn past teenagers. So don't want to hear your bullshit excuses. The best advice I can give regarding training as you age is you have to train smarter. Listen to your body, it will tell you what you can and can't do. The progressive overload should be very gradual. Setting goals is nice, but trying to achieve a 500lb bench and all that stuff shouldn't be a priority anymore. Staying overall healthy and just feeling good should be the primary goal from here to the end.

Is gaining 20 pounds an acceptable bulk? I plan to bulk and cut between 170 and 150 forever. I bulked up to 200 before and was strong but pretty fricking fat. Looked good when I got down to 150 though. Don't really want to ever have to diet long enough to lose 50 pounds again though... It's like 5 months of hell eating only 1200 or less calories.

I'm about to tailor a new program with the intention of gaining muscle mass in certain areas now lacking.
I was fat and became lean before I started lifting, now I'm afraid of getting fat again when bulking. I made some pretty nice newb gains while eating mostly clean and without calorie counting (that is too impractical for me as I want to eat family meals that my wife cooked).
