Tai-Chi

Is Tai-Chi a respectable or enjoyable martial art? I want to use it for balance with a condition I have.

Is it useful in a fight or for self-defense compared to others?

Chen Style Push hands can make you quite a talented wrestler. The best Chen practitioner in the world in my opinion is Master Chen Zhonghua. Here is a video of his student performing push hands against a wrestler.

It's congenital nystagmus and probably some other brain issues. I tried J-Jitsu and my eyes got stuck curling into my head because of trying to flip so much. Stability and a slower pace are emphasized for people with this.

Please dont do any combat sport with any eye issues. Your eye doctors should warn you when asked about this.

Oddly enough, Tai Chi is suggested for people with this along with acupuncture (because it apparently restores lost eyesight, just a fun fact).

im studying TCM and acupuncture. You should give it a shot. I've seen some pretty impressive breakthroughs in my school clinic. And yea, no combat sports for you.

And what is the reputation practitioners of this art tend to have? I hear a lot of people talk shit about Jui Jitsu here.

tai chi can be used for fighting, watch the old school jet-li movie before he got really big. when sped up it can be external, but it's of course more internal and meant for that.

Yes respectable and enjoyable. Compared to many others as far as effectiveness, not really, not in the top 15 I’d say. But at the end of the day you’re generally not going to fight other martial artists, your fighting drunk morons.

No you fricking idiot. OLD PEOPLE who can BARLEY WALK do it for "exercise". It is neither exercise nor a martial art. Not a single competitive fighter uses tai chi in any way shape or form. People meme about "just speeding the techniques up and its muh 10000 folded steel" and thats horse shit because you a) still need to actually train at 100% speed eith a partner to execute effectively IRL or you'll get shit stomped and b) that wouldn't be tai chi then, would it?

An MMA guy made the rounds in China a few years ago absolutely beating the shit out of all these moron kung pow chicken masters. The premiere of all of China himself fricking seethed about it and ordered people to stop disseminating it on social media. Shaolin/animal styles, wing chun, suck pow frick--he beat their moron manchild asses.

I did all that stupid shit, plus karate (stupid shit 2.0), and after learning I'd been lied to my whole life I started Muay Thai and MMA a few years ago and have never looked back. I think traditional arts have been misinterpreted so poorly over the years from their original, fighting forms that the dancing we see now is a mere shadow. And when it is done properly, its just fricking MMA with slanty eyes. Ian Abernathy does this with karate in the UK.

Maybe MMA is just more brutal and abides by a less strict code of honor, and MMA fighters don't play by the rules.

They are literally governed by the unified rules

Was abiding by these standards confirmed when Mr. Macho MMA fighter claimed to take down all of Chinatown?

Alright, fair enough. I suppose the point is the Tai Chi artist is used to training in a dojo and not doing hand-to-hand combat. I also wonder the years of experience of this Master because he only flexed his 30 years of competitive MMA.

Heres xu xiaodong pushing in the shit of a direct student of ip man as a bonus

Also, please note that xu is not even a pro. He tried to fight a journeyman muay thai pro and ended up with a fractured skull.

Find a real tai chi artist. I was in a taoist tai chi school for 8 years until my Sifu passed away this January. He was a priest of the Wudang mountains. Sifu taught us slow tai chi as well as bagua, liang yi, and fast traditional kung fu. You need to find a tai chi artist who actually knows the practical applications. Tai Chi in and of itself is great at building balance and internal strength. But the real strength of Tai Chi is how many fricking arms and legs you're breaking. Tai Chi is not suitable for cage fighting, but rather for street survival. In the opening moves of my first Tai Chi fan form you're breaking a mans arm and leg at the same time as he tries to punch you, and then you stab him in the juggular with the fan and trip him over his own broken leg. To the untrained eye, it's just some dude lifting his arms up and putting them back down slowly. If they don't know the REAL combat applications, find someone who will.

    >Respectable & enjoyable
Yes. It's a lot like yoga with, imo, a more interesting cultural backdrop.

    >Is it useful in a fight or for self-defense compared to others?
It's useless unless you already know how to fight.

Yeah, I've started practicing it a while ago and I can really feel my qi cultivating. I've only been able to change the radio station by waving my hand so far, but I should be able to fly on a sword and live off of dew and mist soon.
