The biggest lie told by the FDA

Salt is good for you and the majority of people can enjoy a high salt intake.
You can loose two grams of salt in an hour or cardio.
If you’re active your body can regulate salt levels without undue stress.
The only people who need to regular their salt intake are bloatfats.
If you’re healthy your salt intake should be measured against your water intake.
6g a day is a baseline macro for people who do little activity.

There's this thing called the korean paradox. South koreans eat super salty in general and yet are one of the people with the least heart issues. This pushed people to study this and find out why. Turns out, it's way more dangerous for your heart health to eat less than the FDA recommends than up to 3 (or was it 5? Can't quite remember) whole fricking times MORE than it recommends. Pretty wild

If you're IST chances are you need extra salt same with cholesterol. There is a divide between doctors and nutritionists on salt and cholesterol. Doctors look at pre determined ranges for everything while in nutrition we look at optimal ranges for you.

If you really want to know what your level should be get your blood done with full metabolics that means adrenal function, liver and kidney function and etc then take your results to a nutritionist and sports scientist.

What do you mean on a keto diet? They eat tons of rice. They eat rice with literally every meal, breakfast to dinner. There's nothing keto about that.

That's why I said basically. Eating white rice carbs is very different to the carbs eaten by the average american which is where I would guess this study was done.

This is unironically what western imperialism/white supremacy looks like now. It's the assumption that the "white" view is the default and anything that contradicts it is "weird and wrong" even when most of their takes are stupid, like waiting until you're 40 to have kids.

That’s not what I’m saying. I know high sodium levels promote high blood pressure.
However very active people sweat a lot, they also drink a lot of water. Like 4 litres a day. You can loose 2gs of salt in a single litre of sweat.
Many athletes are salt deficient. This can be seen when cardio athletes cramp.
I’m saying if you sweat a lot you can disregard the 6g advice and go higher to enjoy delicious salted foods.

  6. 2 years ago

It's not so much a lie, as a miscommunication, i.e. the people that health advice is targeted are not the people that listen to health advice. The average American gets far too much salt in his diet, so it may seem reasonable to advise the average American to stop. The problem that the average American doesn't listen to health advice, and only autists who post on IST do -- and those autists are likely running at the lower boundaries of sodium intake due to healthy eating and excessive sweating.

Been saying this for a decade. Normies will always say "well my boomer GP who went to medical school 40 years ago says salt is bad so I'll listen to the expert." The mainstream always lags so far fricking behind on this kind of shit. Anyone who lives by mainstream advice is the same breed of moron who said "Studies and doctors say it's fine!" about cigarettes in the 50s and kept destroying their lungs. They probably still follow the food pyramid, inhale processed grains every day and avoid eggs because muh cholesterol. Give it another 10 or 15 years and the relevant authorities will finally admit salt is fine and move on to smugly assuring the public not to listen to crazy conspiracy theorists about some other health or nutrition topic they are clearly fricking wrong about.

I was a medic in the army and can confirm this. We even carried those small packets of salt from restaurants in our med kits.

Out on military exercises in the heat soldiers tend to drink too much water and pee out all their salt. so they get dehydration symptoms while still drinking lots of water.

        OP

When I was in the army, I’d come off exercise with all my kit caked in salt crystals from my sweat. I’d rub my finger along the encrusted salt veins and lick the salt off.
I’m not suggesting that people who do no exercise and eat like shit increase their salt intake.
I’m just saying for actual fit people salt intake is *probably* immaterial to health (unless you’re an outlier like that black guy here who responds poorly to sodium).
