Coffee's main effect is inhibition of adenosine, a chemical involved in sleep. By shutting it down coffee makes you feel more wakeful. It's less that it gives you energy, and more that it removes tiredness.

Whenever you sleep, adenosine gets set to zero, and when you wake up it starts to accumulate slowly throughout the day. At one point there is enough adenosine in your system that it makes you sleepy (and things like the sun setting, temperature getting lower, ambient noise getting quieter increase the accumulation of adenosine).

As a response to coffee inhibiting the activity of adenosine, your body starts producing more throughout the day as well as sensitising the systems it interacts with. There is more of it, and it acts more strongly. You are tired throughout the day. And because your adenosine receptors have been bombarded all day, have been working all day, they are DESENSITIZED in the evening, when you actually need the adenosine to sleep.

You start sleeping worse, having trouble falling asleep, feeling worse the next day and needing coffee even more, and more, and more, and more.

Also coffee has a quarter-life of just over 12 hours. Even an 11am coffee can and will frick up your ability to fall asleep and your sleep quality.

That's just your adenosine. That's just your sleep. Coffee absolutely fries your dopamine receptors as well long-term in even worse ways.

    Stay away from coffee.

Not him but it's relevant when even a bit of caffeine has big impact on your sleep quality
Drink 200mg caffeine and 12 hours later you still have 50mg in your system

As a sufferer of sleep apnea / excessive daytime sleepiness and a coffee drinker, I notice absolutely zero change in sleepiness and tiredness when I drink coffee, there is absolutely no change when I stop drinking it.
The benefit I get from coffee is that it is synergistic with the stimulants im prescribed for my sleepiness and it helps wake me up. Again, when I stop drinking coffee I find absolutely zero benefit in regards to sleep quality or sleepiness.
I really don't think this guy knows what he's talking about, he's just a nerd that conducts research and has no clinical experience in treating sleep issues.

If that's the effect of caffeine then what about decaf coffee? All the benefits of coffee come from the high levels of antioxidants in it, assuming decaf has most of those then it sounds like a win-win.

yea this is nonsense. when you are adapted to your daily consumption of caffeine it does nothing to hinder sleep. that being said, its very advantageous in my experience to stick to highly filtered cold brew, as it doesnt contain many of the harmful nervous system raping compounds you find in typical coffee

Coffee constricts blood vessels so, it will negatively impact performance. (even though you might be able to push harder due to the rush/stimelating effect of adrenaline) your max output power on caffeine will be less.

That means jackshit, anything is toxic if you take too much of it and 10g is an insanely high threshold for a deadly dose. You would need to drink 100 cup of coffee (average cafeine per cup is 95mg) within 10 hours which is just ridiculous.

it's not a strawman, this is literally the point you're making. you're angry that being "perfectly healthy" is an impossible ideal so you won't even try to improve your own health. stop trying to get out of examining your own thoughts by saying other people are wrong.

                >I'll just do what's fine for me.
