I actually use the gym to cope with my diabetes. Got into DKA this year and went to the hospital with a 700mg/dl glycemia after having lost 15kg eating over 5000kcals a day, unknowingly exacerbating my condition and speeding up my risk of going into a coma. Ever since the doctor told me I need insulin to survive for the rest of my life it's like the gym is the only place where I feel like I'm in control of my life, without thinking about anything other than the workout itself. Plus hitting PR's and progressing motivates me to go through life in all other aspects and keep fighting every day. It's not a horrible disease nowadays, it's just a pain in the ass, and sometimes the feelings of loneliness and hopelessness, of having to do this until the day you die, not eating or doing anything freely because muh glucose, feels like a prision. So when I'm training, I feel free.

I notice the most cockiness from people who have been lifting for like a year or two and put on some size for the first time in their life. At this point, you either stop lifting and stay cocky, keep lifting but don’t make any improvement and stay cocky, or make improvement and get humble. I’m a big fan of bodybuilding and strongman and have met quite a few pros, some of the biggest guys around, and most of them are extraordinarily humble, with the exception of guys like Eddie hall who have made being cocky their character online.
