The Most Gamma Sport

>motivates not avoiding takedowns
>motivates no athleticism
>motivates pure trickery to subdue someone
>motivates remaining on the ground and on your back after getting taken down
>emphasizes the least important aspect of self-defense - submitting someone
>Very easily fricks your joints
The heart of bjj is learning the "tricks" to get someone to submit. In reality, bjj teaches very weak take down skill and contains very little athleticism when compared to nearly every other sport, both being key components to self-defense. The whole art is built around the idea that submitting someone in self-defense is badass and a smart idea, neither being true. The actual ground control is also very weak.

None of this would be a problem if bjj wasn't absolutely everywhere, in demand by every moron trying to learn to "fight". Wrestling, for example, is a far superior sport, and yet wrestling clubs are not as common. Just try finding a wrestling gym in your area; it is very difficult. Judo is in the same boat. The key reason why bjj is so common is that it requires little athleticism, all with the promise of learning "superior self-defense" and "to subdue people of greater size"; this is all false of course. You cannot dissociate athleticism and self-defense. The arrogance of bjj people is astounding.

There is a market demand for bjj because of the Gamma mentality. That is, learning the tricks to hurt people without any athleticism or character. It is a sport that draws on the weakness of people with big promises of self defense. In reality, this means other better sports, such as wrestling or judo, become harder to find because every gym turns into a bjj gym, and every MMA gym emphasizes bjj the most. The point is its hard to find other options. Former wrestlers are forced to partake in this shit sport because they can't go anywhere else

When weapons are an option, and where in most of the "civilised" world you end up worse off in the long run if you get caught defending yourself; martial arts are just that; arts.

I agree they are just arts. Bjj however is absolutely everywhere, and yet its one of the dumbest sports to learn self-defense. Its the first one people think of nowadays when 'learning how to defend yourself'. Judo and wrestling are better options

Judo is decently available around London, but you are right there is a massive saturation with BJJ.
        Personally I think the self defense aspect you learn from each art is to avoid the modality you train in. In terms of self defense;
        >Judo teaches you how to avoid being thrown
        >BJJ teaches you how to get back off the ground and avoid a pin
        >Striking arts teach you to avoid a concussion

There is value in learning BJJ, but probably after becoming proficient in other areas.

I'm american, so judo is a lot less common than in europe or UK. Bjj is literally the only grappling alternative to wrestling. American wrestling, which is a great sport, doesn't exist outside of high school and college. Sometimes i go to an MMA gym nearby and they do some wrestling, but that's only like 1 session a week. And I mean real wrestling where you avoid getting pinned. These gyms are expensive too. And frankly, bjj is just plain boring. I go for a takedown and the guy just falls over to get me in his guard.
          >Bjj teaches you how to get back off the ground and avoid the pin
Yes it teaches it, but the sport itself doesn't motivate this, which is why the activity itself is so stale compared to wrestling, where you actually LOSE if you get pinned.

I think knowing bjj is valuable, but its everywhere like an invasive species.

I'm a judoka from cuckanada and have been to 10 different tournaments in the states. Judo isn't an attention prostitute like bjj and doesn't get advertised as much because judo academies are the furthest thing from a mcdojo and you can't pay your way to a blackbelt. You actually have to earn it. We have ground work as well and everytime a judoka rolls with a bjjgay 8/10× the judoka submits the bjjgay especially if he has good sambo skills as well.

No one in America really knew about judo since it was never mainstream like boxing, but UFC came along and bjj is the only thing that is seen as a real life superpower even though all it is, is just the Brazilian STYLE of judo that was given a different name so the gracies could advertise it to markets that weren’t familiar with it. Everything was already in judo that is in bjj, but they focused on the ground like kosen judo did (before bjj). Which is the fault of kano for not making kodokan judo like kosen from the beginning. Bjj in my opinion is its own sport, but the martial art is judo

Because it attracts Gammas - i.e. loser's. Standup is fatiguing, so requires athleticism. The whole sport is built on the framework of beating people up without being athletic. Wrestling, on the other hand, is a total grind. This is because taking down people is a total grind. Of course, grinding and pain are aversions to the gamma, who simply wants the 'secret code' to winning.

    >"to subdue people of greater size"
This is the most bizarre aspect about all these martial arts, why would you want to be and look weak yet be able to hurt people?
Why would you want to be a low status man by looking weak and being unhealthy but then surprise people by being a violent moron who learned some autism-jutsu bullshit for years just to be able to hurt people? This will never make you bad ass, you will just go from "weak autist" to "dangerous moron" in people's head which is even lower status.

Bjjers are absorbed in the bubble of the sport. Everyone else who haven't bought into it have to deal with its ubiquitous dojos and fans, all while struggling to find better, cheaper alternatives.

Bjjer's in this thread aren't getting the full context. Bjj, from the perspective of OTHER grappling sports (wrestling, judo, etc.) is a subpar sport. It lacks real athleticism and intensity. It is boring. Anyone who's wrestled knows bjj is not really a replacement, but that's what we're stuck with since wrestling doesn't exist outside high school and college. Judo is also less common in the US. However, when trying to wrestle a bjjer, their objectives are moronic because the sport is moronic. It does not reward aggression. So the bjjer just tumbles over, or you roll on the ground fishing for submissions, which is not very exciting. Its not as deep as bjjer's think. And most importantly, it is NOT fun. Taking down people is fun because it is INTENSE. Bjj is not intense. It is for people who sucked at wrestling but still want to fell bad-ass.

None of this would be a problem if bjj was just here and there, and there were more wrestling gyms or grappling gyms that aren't bjj. But no. Everywhere you go, every MMA gym, emphasizes bjj above everything else. This is because it is in more demand and it is EASIER than learning standup. Ideally 90% of the training should be towards takedowns since that is more fun, more intense and more important. The rest should be ground game. But no, bjj homosexuals love how good they are at submissions. So we have to waste our time laying on our backs. It really is a shit sport for anyone who wants something exciting

I thought this thread was just another one of those mindless "XD bjj is gay", but you're actually spot on. The reason people hate on bjj is because it's everywhere, it's expensive, and it's overrated by normies. I do bjj bc I like grappling and there's no alternatives that's within an hour of me. My mma gym has bjj taught and filled with ufc fighters amongst fighters in other major mma organizations. And it's so stereotypically bjj it sucks. Takedowns are rarely taught and even more rarely practiced because EVERYONE is afraid of getting hurt falling. If I ever hear a Judo, Sambo, or wrestling club opening nearby, I'm definitely going to drop bjj.
To compare, when I did Judo, my athleticism and coordination improved a lot. Class was balanced between stand up and ground work. Maybe a jiujitero might say Judo ground work sucks, but it's contextually different. Judo ground work starts with turtle typically (you might get thrown or fail a throw in which case turtle is the most common defensive position). In Judo, you have a few seconds to do something or else the ref will stand you up, so it's less pussy footing around like bjj ground game (where you can sit in a position for minutes and do barely anything with no qualm). Judo also has pins, so sitting with your back on the ground (other than guard/half guard) means you lose. Overall, frick I miss Judo, I like grappling, and I think bjj is mediocre (no gi bjj is the only good thing to come out of the mass popularity of bjj).

The average bjj school has a 5 minute warmup, drills a takedown or defense for 2 minutes, then starts live from guard or the majority are buttscooting for the rest of the hour or so long class

I've actually done this back in college. it is a joke that you can win a submission grappling tournament by just taking down then standing up

homie what kind of BJJ school you going to takedowns and takedown defense along with top control are literally a cornerstone of the sport.

I went a bjj only school for a few years. Then now stick to an MMA gym. There's takedowns and takedown defense, but not to the same level of basic high school wrestling. Its just weak in comparison

the problem is that wrestling is a bit gay if you do it as a young man, but it becomes very gay if you do it as a grown up hairy man

Firearms is a different sport. I go shooting regularly and have hunted all my life. Now, lets use your post to make a comparison so we can understand this problem better. Just imagine if 99% of the gun ranges you visited, you could only shoot hand-guns. No rifles. Nothing. Just handguns. This is because everyone thinks that shooting a rifle is pointless, since the government banned them, their "too big and clunky", and other bogus reasons. So you are forced to never get to shoot your preferred gun. This is how bjj is and operates. It is everywhere. We are all compelled to do it or do nothing at all. Of course, unlike a hand-gun compared to a rifle, bjj is notably lamer than other grappling sports

Boxing I can find and MMA gyms as well. But pure wrestling does not exist and pure judo is miles away. But I’m more into grappling than striking, so boxing isn’t really an option. This is related to the price, since mma gyms are expensive but only for a little wrestling, so not worth it. I’m paying for all this other stuff I don’t care about

not all schools emphasize not having athletic ability / having size power, etc..
A good academy will promote a strength program and lump together judo techniques / wrestling/ BJJ and make it submission grappling, that's what Jiu Jitsu really is at its heart. unfortunately since it is everywhere the majority of academies tend to soften it up and their programs to make it palatable for the average normie. it's a shame. It is arrogant to throw the whole art out the window when it is proven effective.

Wrestling is equally moronic in a fight. If you go for a wrestling takedown irl you can easily bang you head/neck and end up paraplegic or moronic.
BJJ has great concepts, Judo and Wrestling have great concepts.
Muay Thai and Sambo are the apex of real world fighting.
I've tried a little bit of all of them and a lot if Muay Thai/Boxing, you need all of the pieces to complete the puzzle.
It's like rock paper scissors. If you only possess one you're vulnerable to the others. BJJ has flaws, so do all fighting sports.

No. Outside of Japan and maybe Russia, Judo is mostly for children. If you're not near a major city, you pretty shit out of luck.
Here in Poland for example, I live in a major city with almost 20 gyms that offer Judo. None of them I know of have Judo for adult programs. You can pay a high price for private lessons though.
Try looking Sambo, Wrestling, shoot fighting, or Sanda/Sanshou if you want stand up grappling with mat elements.

Depends on where you are, mate. Sambo is no joke. Fedor and Khabib are two of the greatest fighters ever. In my personal opinion, Khabib is the greatest hand to hand fighter in history that we have evidence of.
Sambo is a blend of BJJ, Wrestling, Judo, and Kickboxing. If anything it is probably the most complete martial art because their grappling is in the context of fights where someone can strike you and their striking is in the context of of a fight where someone can takedown or submit you.
Just Google your location + Sambo. Hopefully you have a gym nearby. I have one legit one and one mcdojo one but the good one only has 2 classes a week that conflict with my schedule so I train Wrestling, MMA, and BJJ for my grappling.

Sambo is the real deal. Wrestling, Judo, BJJ, MMA, Boxing, and Muay Thai are all legit but have pluses and minuses. At the very least your should have an mma gym nearby. It is not going to make you the next UFC champ but in a few years you'd frick up 95% of the guys you see in daily life.

Bjj is a sport, not self defense. What a shit moron post

You mad a Lil old lady got you to tap out again?

Missing the whole point of the post. I know bjj. I'm very familiar with it, having done it for about 4 years now on and off. I simply don't care for it, like a hookup. Interestingly enough, this joke of 'muh but a girl beat you up that's why yur so critical' is in fact a component of the OP. bjjers are so wrapped up in the 'but you can beat anyone with bjj', that their own rhetoric can't escape it. They think everyone gives a shit about losing by submission in bjj. But who cares1 In real self-defense, getting submitted is the least of your problems, second to (a) getting shot, (b) getting knocked out, and (c) getting taken down and your head kicked in. Then the same bjjers say 'but bro its not about self-defense, its just a sport', all while saying 'lol he got beat by a girl'. So which is it? Clearly it is the latter. bjjers do it to feel tough and 'like fighters'. But the sport itself DOES NOT build toughness or athleticism, at least not compared to other grappling sports.

In America it is so hard to find judo, I moved recently and the closest strictly judo gym is 2 hours away, I still go once a week because that is where I used to train all the time and judo is my main martial art way. Bjj is around every other street corner nowadays and according to robert drysdale and rhadi ferguson, two renowned people in the community who dont get enough attention, bjj is judo, at least the martial art, the sport is a separate thing now but it is all just a style of judo. If you’re in europe it should be significantly easier to find a judo gym

Some more context. If you didn't wrestle in the US you won't get this immediately. So in the US, you learn wrestling for basically free. You do it practically every day, training at an extreme intensity, for barely nothing. Pennies. So you do this for about 8 years, and then you get into the real world and start working, so wrestling becomes a thing of the past. However, eventually it would be 'nice' to re-experience the sport in some shape or form. So what are the options? Well, you shop around and find there are a couple: (a) teach at your old high school or in college; (b) do MMA, or (c) do bjj. Only option (a) is the cheapest, but you're not wrestling adults so its kinda weird. There are expectations you need to be super good and keep up with the kids, which is difficult due to age. Option (b) and (c) cost a frick-ton. When you compare the price to the basically free intense training you had as a kid, it is very disappointing. Paying $200 for some wrestling, maybe twice a week? Nah, I'll pass. So we are left with changing our interests all together.

ITT: a bunch of dudes at the top of the Dunning Kruger curve giving antecdotal evidence on martial arts from their crumbs of experience. Find a combat sport gym, go train, compete when you can so you know your shit objectively works. BJJ/Judo/Wrestling all have pros and cons, BJJ is just accessible to the average person. People think Wrestling is a superior art, but that's usually because wrestlers they see have been training and competing in the school system since they were kids. BJJ BTFO out of Wrestling for the first couple UFCs. Then the fricking monsters from the NCAA learned some submission defense and started winning. Shocker.

      >: a bunch of dudes at the top of the Dunning Kruger curve...
The top of the Dunning Kurger chart are the people with high confidence, and high results. Contrary to what plebbit might tell you, the people who know less tend to be less confident, not more. You just exposed yourself as someone who talks about shit he doesn't understand.

And once the wrestlers learned some submission defence the BJJ guys got on gear, started better
Strength & conditioning routines and cross trained some takedowns at a wrestling club. No decent UFC fighter is a one trick pony anymore. They all train everything, and if they're not well rounded someone who is will come along and stop them eventually, looking at you Conor McGregor. If you're looking for something to start? Go to a BJJ club, train a bit, and try to visit other gyms as much as you can to make sure you're not at a McDojo.

As someone that has trained mma, wrestling, judo and jiujitsu, bjj is the inferior grappling art because of the lack of pinning techniques and the lack of strength and conditioning.
Bjj revolves around the use of position to get a submission and most places focus more on submissions from your back and although bjj does have top control and submissions from the top, all the bjj does in the top position is the mount.
Wrestling although it doesn't have submission is all about getting to top control and combined with the strength training it mogs the shit out of bjj groundwork because you actually need to break a pinning technique before you are able to counter attack, if you don't know the proper techniques, you simply can't do a submission, sweep, reversal and what not if you are being pinned.
Judo ground work also revolves around getting pinning techniques before getting a submission when it goes to the ground and even if bjj seemingly has more variety of subs (except for leg locks it really doesn't have more subs than judo, everything else is the same)
Bjj revolves around controlling a position to get a submission, however it doesn't have pinning techniques (wich is what you want to use to control a position) so it fails when going against someone that does wrestling or judo.
Mma already teaches the same type of grappling as bjj + wrestling takedowns and pins.

Bjj is obsolete and gets mogged by every other grappling style by having better technique and infinitely better strength training.
If you want to do bjj go ahead, you might get good at bjj but if you want to learn to fight there is better options out there.
