The only way to resolve the obesity crisis in the United States would be by restructuring the infrastructure, which would encourage more walking and other forms of physical activity. This will never happen, but I do believe that it would reverse the increasing obesity in the country.

Americans put additional sugar in 56% of all of their product, and the average American eats, on average, 150grams of it. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine.
Only that would be enough to make everyone obese. But they also have corn syrup in everything, fat and empty carbohydrates. Every single meal they associate with their culture is unhealthy. I’m all for walkable infrastructure but that alone will never solve the American question

I'm addicted to sugar. I have 3 and a half teaspoon of sugar in each cup of tea. I'm addicted to coke and Pepsi. I love cake and sweets.
      I weigh 9 stone 10 at 5'7.

Came to say this. Our food culture is completely fricked and most people don't even notice. People think nothing of getting a morning coffee that's practically a milkshake along with a pastry and bacon egg and cheese sandwich with ketchup. Then at lunch time they have a huge bag of chips and candy along with their sandwich. Then for dinner they get takeout.

The problem is that in muttland the government bends over to the corporations. If the government really cared they would make laws about unhealthy food and protect their citizens but they don't care. They want you to be fat and controllable. Also the open lobbying in America is fricking disgusting, that kind of shit would never pass in my country.

Average american intake is 3700 calories per day. Average irish is 3800. Average french is 3600. Average britbong is 3400. Yet britbongs are fatter than both the french and irish, trailing just barely behind the US, and if not for 80% of black women and 50% of black men being overweight or obese in America, the Brits would take the trophy. Britbongistan is so small you could walk from london to Brighton. So what is uniquely american and british that makes them fat?

This is a new problem. Euros and Americans were both slim fifty years ago. It's probably caused by a number of factors but limiting the types of food that can be subsidized by taxpayers is a surefire solution. I don't want my tax dollars being used to kill poors.

In the US I think it's because of our heavily car-based culture (I'll even drive my car 5 minutes to save a 10 minute walk), and the ingrained push to /entertainmentmax/ what free time we have which can lead to prioritizing sedentary hobbies and video/ya consumption over exercise and lower entertainment-density activities like playing sports.

What about teaching cooking in schools ?
At least it would help some of them to discover that there's more than the premade slop, maybe passion in futur cooks and will make most of them skip the horrible cantina's food for at least one day.

The fat people in europe are either in big cities or rural regions where they use their car for everything.

Yeah no those wallmart-scooter "people" would be considered circus freaks over here. I have never seen or heard of anyone that is so obese that he can't walk around like a normal human being in Europe. It's just impossible to go everywhere by car/fat person scooter over here so I guess if you become that fat you just get bullied into fasting for a while by the infrastructure lmao.

Unfortunately I do know of one, a relative of mine. She's a shut in and has to sleep downstairs in a two storey house where the bedrooms are meant to be upstairs.
She has a son who brings the food to her. Totally dependent on welfare. It's really sad.
As for cities, who wants to live there? Cities in most western countries are turning into hellscapes. Stay out of the cities, earn as much as you can, and buy a house in a nice middle-class area.
Anyway walking is fine but the reason people are obese is not from lack of walking

Of course, but this would go against the massive car lobby ("cars = freedom", of course not really, because cars require infrastructure built by the state, they can't really drive on fields, can they, but that's besides the point).

Another problem is the lobby of the food industry. Processed foods are really unhealthy. Most Americans have acres of land by their house, there they keep an immaculate lawn which they have to mow. They would die of shame if they grew fruit trees and vegetables there and then prepared the food themselves.

It's many factors that are all a symptom of the toxic American culture. Obesity stems from many things at once. The US is a fundamentally sick society.

      >23 minutes is a hike
      kek

I wouldnt call it a hike but most of the US is sparse. It's not like Europe or New York where you pass 20 city blocks and 500 businesses in 20 minutes. 20 minutes is about 1.5 miles if you're walking at a normal pace. I'm in a major US city, 1.5 miles gets me outside of my neighborhood. I pass by nothing but other houses, woods, and 2 schools. If I instead drive for 20 minutes I can travel approximately 15 miles. This is actually enough distance to take me into the middle of le heckin walkable city part downtown. Within a 2 mile radius of me is not much, but within a 15 mile radius is everything. Currently its 100+ degrees so I dont think anyone wants to spend 3 hours walking to their destination then 3 back when they could just drive for 20 minutes.

The only way to resolve this is the spongebob solution. Take everyone and everything, make it smaller, stack it, and push it closer together somewhere else.

I can relate. In my suburban Massachusetts neighborhood, the only place I can walk to in half an hour is a couple of schools. There are few to no sidewalks.

You're wrong. Plain and simple. The UK is about as fat as the US and their whole country is walkable. Places like Belgium are slimmer despite driving more.

Stop pushing this moronic meme. The problem is corn/soi food subsidies > cheap GMO crops > cheap PepsiCo and coca cola products > SNAP > poors go to Walmart and spend their taxpayer funded food money on taxpayer funded garbage food > poors spend taxpayer funded medical care money to treat their diseases from taxpayer funded cheap garbage food to continue eating said food much longer than natural limit

yeah or they could just subsidize unprocessed vegetables and tax the shit out of anything with added sugar.

Making people walk wouldn’t solve the problem. No amount of walking will make people less fat.
Also, the car-based infrastructure is one of the USA’s biggest strengths. Total freedom of movement without reliance on government transportation is one of the things that makes America a free country. To be forced to rely on train schedules and train lines and walking distances is to give up your freedom

Subterranean parking lots would be cool instead of parking towers. But remember the US is large, it spans 5 time zones in just the continental states. Subterranean lots dont work at all in the south because most of Louisiana, Mississippi, florida, and Alabama are all swampland. A constantly flooded underground garage is probably not a good idea. Additionally most structures there are made with cement to withstand hurricanes. Subtrrranean parking garages also do no good in the midwest. they dont have enough people to fill them. Then in California its also a challenge. The most densely populated areas constantly get earthquakes. Underground facilities are risky and expensive.
