The Ultimate Debate

>tl;dr Kettlebells vs Dumbbells — which one do you prefer and why?
The more I think, the more I research and the more I look into it, I simply can't find a reason why I should get Dumbbells when Kettlebells exists.
Everything you can do with Dumbbells, you can also do with Kettlebells, from Curls to Raises, and such.
BUT, many of Kettlebells-centric lifts CANNOT be efficiently reproduced with Dumbbells, due to factors like weight distribution, and such. (i.e. Swings and Armor Building Complex).
>but you can always buy both / any gym has both, so you can always use both
Yes you can. But building a nice and efficient home gym is becoming the goal of everyone now, due to modern culture ruining gyms for everyone. And of course most people just wants the extreme convenience of lifting at home.
And that means getting only one or another not only saves space, but saves a lot of MONEY, and saving up is becoming more and more important too.
>I have lots of money
Then you can ignore this thread.
And for that matter, I can't see why I would ever bother getting Dumbbells, when Kettlebells are a thing, being much more versatile and flexible.
What do you think, IST? Have you gotten redpilled into Kettlebells yet, or are you still adamantly sticking to Dumbbells? Why?

    kettlebell bench press?

Either the weight jams into the back of your forearm, fricking it up over time, or you flip it the other way around and all of the weight rests on the joint that connects your thumb to your hand. If you can bench any amount of real weight it becomes impractical to even consider doing it with kettlebells

You can do more granular increases in weight with DB and certain exercises work better with DB even if you can do them with KB. KB are better for ballistic movements in general and squats. Then just do curls, rows and bench with DB.

        >granular increases in weight with DB
pointless when the whole point of DBs is doing high volume low weight, you're not trying to break through egolifting 1RMs with it
you can start with 35lbs KBs and do enough volume until you're conditioned enough to move into 53lbs, and then finally into 70lbs
these 3 sizes are the golden standard weights for men, and you literally don't need anything heavier than 70lbs as far as KB/DB accessories goes
and after reaching that point, KB opens up a much larger pool of possible exercises and movements than DB

not needed, just do seesaw presses and hindu push ups for maximum pressing power.

Yeah that'll surely build up a strong chest just like DB/BB benching.

that's what the barbell is for
all progressive overloading big boy compounds are still done with barbells

True, but a bench and a rack can be an expense. I have done entire workouts just with the bar at different stations, incorporating curls, incline press, bench press, squat, and deadlifts/cleans. That is a great way to work out, along with bodyweight core exercises.

I prefer kettlebells but it doesn't really matter.
What matters is if you are actually moving a weight around on a regular basis and getting stronger.

This is trying to seem smart but it’s just stupid as frick. One isn’t better than the other, they’re different tools for different uses. Get what works best for you and stop being so poor

Dumbells allow for a greater range of motion. Can do things like bench, squat, presses easier with dumbbells

the appeal of kettlebells is I can buy 2 or 3 and get a shit ton of value for that
if it's a full rack or dumbbells vs a rack of kettlebells then dumbbells are way better

kettlebells feel the best to me for overhead pressing, i like how the weight sits. doing tricep or curls with KBs kind of suck, i used to get my pants belt and just wrap it around the handle and curl like that. for leg stuff other than swings theyre kind of the same

You can do swings with dumbbells, not sure what weight distribution has to do with it you're still swinging the weight. And with adjustable dumbbells you can overload one side and turn it onto a makeshift kettlebell anyway.

Curls and raises with kettlebells require much more effort to avoid injuring yourself. You can't do variations like hammer curls and you can't properly rotate your arms to avoid impingement when doing overhead raises.

Yeah, for a reason. Why would I risk the weight slapping the back of my arm when I can have it rest in a safe and controlled manner on my palm?

if the weight is slapping your forearm you aren't doing it right, thats kettlebell 101 you have to fix

Kettlebell enthusiasts always talk about "strength on the transverse plane" and "functional strength" or kettlebell movements being more athletic or more suitable for power training than powerl movements. Is there any evidence that backs those claims up? The idea of transverse strength seems like a total meme to me. When I wanted to hit a baseball farther I did weighted chinups, not memey cable pulls or kettlebell swings. Strength is simply strength, right?

      >When I wanted to hit a baseball farther I did weighted chinups, not memey cable pulls or kettlebell swings. Strength is simply strength, right?
Yes and no. you also have to train the movement, since it's a chain of muscles firing in order. the same way that doing squats and dead lifts and ohp will not necessarily make you better at clean and press.
rotational strength is better done with clubs and maces, however

If you want to be cost efficient, buy adjustable screw on dumbbells and plates. Kettlebells are an absolute meme.

Thinking in "either-or" terms is a sign of stupidity. Both are prooven and great tools, if you know what to do, you can milk them out. I like KB's because of they're easier to master when it comes to ballistic movements. Three KB's it's good enough. But to have a set of duobells in home? It would be fantastic.

Buy spinlock dumbbells and weight for 50c a lb.
Then buy that plastic dumbbell to kettle bell handle.
    BOOM
