The "new" ergrow that is under $1000 is shit compared to the older Model D that was much more expensive and robust as you would find in professional gyms.

I'm a complete dyel and the definition of fat, weak and cowardly. I didn't want to walk, run or swim in public so I got one. Somehow I've managed 1 hour a day for 36 days. I started off struggling to do 1000 strokes in an hour on lvl 4 of 17. Now I'm doing 1500 strokes on lvl 6 in 60-65 minutes. No idea what I'm doing so my goal is to just gradually increase the difficulty while maintaining 1500 strokes in 1 hr.

I like it, I just put some loud music on my earphones and day dream as I row. It probably sounds pretty pathetic but the only things I've really noticed strength wise is my forearms seem a little larger and I no longer need to rest the kettle on the edge of the sink as I fill it up.

I've only lost 5.5kg (12lbs) since I started using it which is a little disappointing as I've lost a similar amount in the preceding two months.

Hella based Anon. No idea how to measure progress on a rowing machine, but what you're doing sounds like a good idea.

I'm curious about that too. I like to keep track of my 500 meter split time. I've gotten mine from a bit over 2 minutes at 26 strokes per minute down to a minute 40 at a constant 31 strokes per minute.

There's also wattage to see how much power you can put down. I was hoping to reach a kilowatt but all the machines at my gym are down from either a broken strap or a busted resistance band. It's tough out here.

When you started you lost mostly water weight, the latter 12 pounds were actual fat and 12 pounds are nothing to scoff at, you're doing good king

Why does rowing not release any reward hormones (endocannabiods? whatever), while running does? It feels 100% like a chore.
Shame running is so shit on the joints if you have a condition or are overweight.

      I have a few theories:
      1. Because rowing includes upper body while requiring good posture, it’s extremely tiring. For running and cycling, you’re just moving your legs, which are designed for cardio. As humans we are upper body centric, so lower body cardio lets us do other things like drink, wipe our sweat, change our music, etc. Swimming is also upper body and I don’t do it much, but since you’re not trying to keep your posture it may not be as bad.
      2. If you understand the numbers on the screen, then you are constantly seeing, for every stroke, your performance. That is really mentally taxing if you have a specific goal. It’s very difficult to be totally consistent especially when you’re tired, so you are constantly getting (possibly negative) feedback. In running and cycling you may get that too, but at least you can distract yourself.

Rowing in a boat is much better, you have your environment + your team to distract you and you aren’t usually getting feedback on your force output. I get much more dopamine from water rows.

Very interesting theory. Naturally, from an evolutionary lens, humans were moulded into endurance runners. It's kinda one of our frankly imbalanced superpowers, next to others like the ability to throw, sweating, etc.
There was no such drive towards upper body specialization -- it's just unremarkable/generic for the weight class/niche.

I get runners high about 20mins into rowing maybe you aren’t doing it hard enough or have bad form

I have ADHD and I have never managed to crack 10 minutes before it makes me wanna kill a cat out of boredom, even with podcasts on 2.5x speed. I use a medium-high setting, though.
I think I'll swallow my pride and finally put a screen in front and watch YT videos or comedy anime.

I normally row 10K every day and do straight barbell lifts. If I don't row I'll run a 4.5 mile loop by my house instead.

Rowing is a great workout and I pass the time by listening to audio books while I row. The one bit of advice I'd give is that max resistance will frick your lower back up so definitely dial it back.

      Anonymous

Can I ask what your lifts are and what your split for your 10k is? I want to mix serious rowing with powerlifting and I’m thinking/researching how to balance recovery.

        Anonymous

Sure. Bench press, overhead press, squats, and Romanian deadlifts mostly, plus skull crushers, close grip bench, curls, pulldowns, and dips.

I was doing regular deadlift but I threw out my back DLing, threw it out again DLing, then threw it out a third time picking up my toddler. So I kind of reasoned that it wasn't just fricked up technique if I could hurt it just as bad picking up a 25lb kid as I could with a barbell. I didn't do any permanent damage to my back but I felt lucky; I hit a PR at 500 and that's enough weight to seriously hurt yourself if something goes wrong.

I feel like I cross train fairly well and rowing is a big part of that. This weekend I ran a tactical biathlon, which is running and shooting through some thick ass woods wearing a plate carrier and using night vision. Being strong enough to do something like that while not getting totally gassed for lack of cardio training is kind of my training objective.

Forgot to answer this. 46-48 minutes usually. Not great not terrible.

That tactical race is badass holy shit, nice. Thanks for the info.

Yeah man it was a good time and a good learning experience. I ended up wading into a swamp up to my balls and then bashing the frick out of my knee on a rock because, while I have a fair amount of NVG time I definitely do not do land nav normally. My other buddy who ran it with me was an Army scout and he fell into the exact same spot and also bashed his knee so I don't feel like a total jackass for tumbling in full gear. We both limped out of there lol.

If you are a gun enthusiast and you don't wear a size 46 gun belt (*cough* IPSIC) then I suggest you look into run n' guns, the Tactical Games, tactical biathlons, and brutality matches. They are a great smoke check and it's a good crowd out there.

I bought a cheap rowing machine a month ago. Spinning bike was moronic due to being a massive fatass. I started doing excercise 4 months ago. Rowing is my favorite workout so far, i dont lift but the body comp of the scale says im gaining muscle and losing body fat like a motherfricker. The mirror confirms. Im not losing weight tho, sad face. The machine says my rhytm is 3:30.
    >inb4 shitty rhytm kys dyel
I know, suck my dick, i can now frick for 3 hours without pause, before doing this shit i could only bang for 20 mins before having a heart attack. I also now have constant erections and can fap 5 times a day and still keep the boner. Im happy as frick.

Can someone explain to a rowlet how to avoid getting blisters on the back of my heels?
Shorter sessions are fine but after 30 minutes I can feel the rubbing against my ankles.

I'm on a concept 2 and wear pic related if it makes any difference.

moleskin works but is annoying to apply every time you row. Try changing shoes and shortening the footpad on the concept2 so the strap is closer to your mdifoot, might help the heel not come up as much
