im black so ill never look cool doing martial arts
I'm literally black as well - OP
you can’t do boxing?
No sir.
HOLY SHIT it's kanye west.
😉
yo wtf it's actually kanye
What kind of mental illness is this? I've never seen it before
Au contraire
homie teddy reiner is the greatest hw judoka of all time. That Lanklet can’t be stopped
Ewertin texeria won the iko kyukhusin karate and was among the top 10 k1 fighters
Ernesto hoost best k1 fighter

He is usually almost a foot taller than his competition, you can’t train height. But with all that said he would probably still be a top 10 judoka if there were still leg grabs. I personally wouldn’t put him above even Hitoshi Saito
What the frick are you talking about?
If you're talking about traditional martial arts then google kung fu Blaxploitation films. Present times, every time I go to a kickboxing gym there's always the one jacked former Tae Kwon Do anime homie effortlessly jumping around doing all sorts of flashy spinning kicks.
You get taught in a ITF or WTF school?
This is the school I go to, not sure if WTF or ITF, I never went to tournaments but might start:
https://www.yunstkd.com/
It's ITF. Hand techniques to the head are allowed, which is as it should be.
I've actually been considering joining a TKD dojo for the past few years, I vacationed in South Korea and saw some public displays where guys were whirling around jumping in gravity defying ways while they kicked boards and it looked rad. Not as a martial art, more like a really cool dance. Seems fun.
You should do it, I think. It is really fun and I think you'll be proud once you see results.
>Not as a martial art, more like a really cool dance. Seems fun.
Give it a shot, you have the right mentality. I do a variety of martial arts, and it's far more realistic to go into them as a sort of health/fitness/body control thing than to delude yourself into believing they will make you a killing machine.
Case in point, I really like the more athletic version of kung fu (like the performance stuff), but it's solidly more in the gymnastics territory than anything else. I can swing a sword around in really cool ways, but there's never gonna be a situation where I'mma need to use that to cut someone. That said, it's a REALLY good workout, and I like to think I look cool doing it.
>Do you practice after class?
I recommend this, but it depends on what you're good/bad at.
If you have difficulty remembering forms/choreo/whatever they call it, make it a daily practice for a while. Case in point, I have hard-as-balls forms I'm working on for a competition involving all sorts of aerial jumps, and I practice those near-daily because it helps develop obvious confidence in the movement.
On the other hand, if you have a hard time being athletic, then just go on runs and up your gym sessions. Lots of Muay Thai guys go on daily runs - probably overkill, but the principle is good.
More broadly, early on, drill punches and kicks a lot. It gives a solid foundation that will pay dividends. I think that probably especially applies to TKD, which is super kick-y.
>I usually have a class before class with the teacher and a few other guys
This is super smart and often the best way to fast track your learning - show up early/stay late with other passionate people.
Myau Thai guys run apparently 3-5 miles a day, its not much when split into 2.5 miles two times a day since they don't try to build up their legs with muscle.
Yeah.
I have heard that running is the best way to get dense shin bones. I don't know if that is why MT guys run, but that is a good way to make your legs harder.
Why does everyone think there is an age cap for martial arts?
Maybe 6 months? I don't know. I feel like I am always improving in little steps and I have been doing martial arts for 5 years, MT for 1.5
Can you do both?
If you switched over to MT you probably wouldn't be "starting from scratch". Also, if you go to a MT gym and train MT, there isn't anything stopping you from doing karate moves. I go to a gym with a MT class, and I like practicing karate stuff at home, and I just bring karate stuff into MT sparring.
Do they spar in your karate program?
>believing they will make you a killing machine.
You don't get to become a killing machine until you get to the level where they teach you hapkido
I'm a white, almost blue, belt in BJJ and I feel like a white with no stripes, my back hurts and I suck, got no grip, nor IQ. I though I would be good given I can fight standing or so I thought...
You'll get better, keep trying. Do you practice after class?
I don't, I usually have a class before class with the teacher and a few other guys
Thought about getting a dummy but should practice some solo drills at home
Practice after class, I think that would help a lot. Do you have any vids of you fighting? Might help. discord?
None of that
yeah, it's a gift
Purple belt here. Literally everyone sucks at bjj when they first start.
>my back hurts and I suck, got no grip
kettlebells
I-I have 4 stripes... Shouldn't I be better by now?
frick
I say that, until you're purple, just shut the frick up, show up, and work hard. You're not supposed to feel good at BJJ until then
Pro tip, practice running, box jumps and jump rope for sparring as well as leg flexibility. Speed and explosiveness in TKD is strength.
Thank you, I never got medals while my older brother did. He practiced after class and was less shy than me. I want to surpass him. I'm fairly short, but my brother is two inches shorter and still better than me, lol. I'm 5'7 and he is 5'5.
TKD is garbage. I did it as a kid. One belt away from black.
How is it garbage? Any recommendations? I want to lose weight and learn discipline.
it's not, he was forced to take tkd as a kid and now hates it, if you go with the right mindset it is really fun and of course it'll help you lose weight and stay focused
It is. If you want to do spinny shit, tricking or gymnastics are superior. If you want cardio swimming is superior. If you want something actually effective muay thai is superior. There is literally no context in which tkd is the correct answer
I want to do judo and wrestling, trouble is that one wrestling club only does a class a week on saturday and the other one has two of their three weekly lessons on the same day as the judo.
Three weekly sessions is better than one, go with Wrestling also lift weights.
I could alternate between the two weekly?
No point, consistency is key in learning in physical disciplines.
what are your goals? Training for mma? For fun? To compete in one or both?
I just want to be a pretty good grappler, I really like the look of both martial arts.
Did ITF style tkd for fifteen years, made fourth dan and was an instructor. Quit after I realized how no matter the school money comes first
I got my black in TKD as a kid way back in 1993. Gave it up not long after. Then my wife got into watching Cobra Kai so I started showing her some basics I remembered, then after covid I tracked down my old master and found he is still teaching. Started training with him again and just passed 1st dan last week. Funny never see TKD mentioned on here
Mostly because the meme sport McDojos they produce, its basically leg fencing with acrobatics.
I was looking for a sport to complement with my lifting as a way to regain some motivation and started bjj this past week and it was great until i remembered my back is shit , i tried to go for a guillotine from a closed guard last friday and was in pain the whole weekend so i dont think is the right sport for me.
Now i am unsure of what to do i wouldnt do boxing sports because of the brain damage and TKD has alot of larping aspects im not attracted to. I cant think of any other sport that appeals to me. Any advise?
Go with HEMA, full on LARP but a based one at that, especially if you got full contact armor larp group, shit's solid.
frick that would be great, but fencing kendo or hema are first world privileges not available to me
wrasslin
I used to do tkd in middle school. Stopped after I got to "junior black" and realised there was three more levels of "junior black" for $120 each I had to pass to qualify for blackbelt advancement.
Didn't learn anything new in those juniors either, just reviewed what you already learned three belts ago
How long do I have to train Muay Thai before I am fairly competent in it? I've been training for about 2 months and am barely better than a beginner
>2 months
You're not better than a beginner, you are a beginner
Practice more than the average beginner and you will be better. Also, go to the gym. I would say 6 months and you will notice change.
How old is too old to learn martial arts
>t. did TKD as a kid but wanted to learn another martial art at 26
You're never too old, the older people in my class were waay better than me. I started at 14.
When u die, as long as you can kinda move you can kinda learn.
im not a homosexual
I'm 34, i did 4 years of judo when i was in university, what's a martial art i could pick up without high risk of injuries?
bjj, its less takedown
Currently working to get my split back after a lazyish summer
Help me, bros. Do I:
A) fulfill an old promise I made to myself, go back to training Kenpo Karate after a break of many years, and obtain my Black Belt (only even got up to Brown) or
B) ignore doing a martial art which isn't super useful in an actual fight, and pick up Muay Thai or MMA, starting basically from scratch and even having to re-learn some stuff?
get the black belt then go on to whatever else you want. karate isn't totally worthless and you'll see a lot of the same strikes blocks and kicks when you go to mma or whatever else you're interested in.
>start doing tkd this year
>out of shape friends be like uhhhh anon muscle isn't enough bro you gonna seee its all about technique bro is not about being the biggest dude
>kick really hard
>kick even harder
> ":o"
>"anon you have talent wanna compete with us?"
i dont even have good mobility i just make the loudest kicks was it all about that? im scared
I think its just that TKD kicking is not a very good for fighting.
Spinning takes too long and people see it coming. Kicks have to either be very fast, directly to the target and without telegraph, OR they have to be set up in a combo. Otherwise opponents see them coming and avoid them.
wheel kicks and spin back kicks are great if they're circling into it or you can set it up with a lead hook or roundhouse
Also very true
>be southpaw
>lead foot dominance battle
>people usually try to circle on the left
>spin hook kick as they do so
So much fun
Black person setting up big strikes is true for literally any strike. If try to yolo a rear hook you'll get your shit rocked too
I don't know if that is really true.
Human reaction time is what it is. If you can strike faster than reaction time, then opponents really cannot react fast enough to do anything about getting hit.
Kicks are bigger and slower and so they are easier to react to. Punches from the pocket really are so close that opponents cannot react. Once you are in the pocket your only option is to bawl it out. To swang and bang.
you have no idea what you're talking about
This is why you throw them as a counter, if you walk into a spinning back kick you are going to get hurt.
Add being the bigger guy (hey, no weight classes in a fight) and it will frick ppl up:
Bonus clip: being familiar with spinning tech allows you to learn and go for spinning elbows and back fists (illegal in tkd but again is a fight) very effectively
Real problems are:
1 zero takedown defence
2 zero face punch defence
3 bladed stance only
Can’t be your main style you will need some boxing but when I moved to mma I kept landing spin shit on the regular
Most reaction time has to do with being in and recognizing similar situations from the past. Spinning strikes aren't common in all martial arts so they can catch people by surprise if they aren't experienced.
Also this, people can’t defend head kicks in general for the same reason in my gym
Question marks kicks, I even get away with inside crescent kicks being a southpaw.
Wouldn’t do it in a real fight probably for the risk reward ratio but imho TKD is legit even for the streets with some adjustments
Tkd is a waste of time.
t. 4th dan who competed internationally and now does muay thai
I’m a black belt in tkd. I highly recommend this sports/martial arts to kids and teenagers.
Pros:
1) develop your cores/legs/hip muscles and stabilizing muscles really well
2) improve your agility, jumps, balancing
Cons:
It’s a piece of garbage in actual fight. Trust me, I had several tkd rule fights quite seriously until I went to high school where I dropped tkd and started rowing and rugby
It is a wonderful martial arts for kids who are developing their muscles since these leg dominant martial arts help you developing legs/core/hips/stabilizer really really well. This helped me for playing rugby/football/other agility sports.
But when you are older than 18, it’s time to gain actual muscles from weight lifting. So make your kids do tkd until they go to middle/high school; then they will choose other chad sports with better starting point then other kids.
tkd is a little cringe but tkd moves in full contact striking is very based. Spin hook kicks will always be badass.
TKD is a meme
it won't any shit in actual MMA fight
I did TKD for 15 years ama
Are you strong?
I stopped doing it three years ago or so and I'm really out of shape. Getting back into shape now. I still have sick legs relative to my fitness level though.
I got to 2nd-kun before quitting at 14
My mom didn't want me competing with head shots, and competing was the fun part of it for me. At that point I was an instructor.
I'm glad she didn't want me getting kicked in the head. I've already had a couple of concussions, and brain damage is no joke. Unless your lifes purpose is becoming the best fighter, and you plan to do what it takes to make a living, dont take risks like that
I always wanted to get into martial arts, but I have hyper mobility in my ankles so it's just too strenuous on my joints.
Also, I'd rather not get my face fricked up with welts and bruises. I've got a handsome babyface and I'd prefer to keep it that way
Find a gym that does boxing workout without real fighting, better tha nothing.
I have hyper mobility in all my joints and I am half man half hard brace when i go to train. Stop being a pussy.
so I have had 26 sessions of judo (3 per week) and I know jack shit about sports and stuff. I am soon to get a yellow belt. can someone give me some information about judo or martial arts in general?
-Don't stress too much about the wishy washy stuff.
-Kuzushi is pretty the main thing you need to understand along with getting used to relaxing with your ukemi.
-Uchimata is bettter than seoi nage.
