there are a few options: your diet is shit, your routine is shit, you don't lift hard enough, your mental sucks or you are in the unimaginably small percentage of people who cannot get to 1/2/3/4 with genuine effort and discipline

    also your mentality is shit

When you say years what do you mean?
I used to think I lifted for “years” from being a teen till college but in reality I was
    >Going gym for 2-3 months at a time
    >Never progressively overloading
    >Taking it too fast and getting burnt out
    >Ate like shit
    >Slept like shit

I made the more strength and aesthetic gains in 2 years of consistent, boring progressive overload, good diet and good sleep than I did with 6 years of frickaroundititis

How often would you progress overload during that time?

        Anonymous

Not him but every session. Always do more than last time in some sense, unless you're deloading - in which case there's a single drop followed by session-to-session increases again.

      consistently for 5 years

        How many times a week?
How long for? What exercises do you usually do?
What's your routine? How much do you overload?
How much protein per day are you eating?

          Anonymous

5 days a week focusing on progressive overload doing primarily barbell compound exercises and dumbbell accessories eating more than 1g per pound of bodyweight in protein

Did you actually lift consistently? I have been "training" for like 4 years, but been hopping on and off with long breaks in between.
I can only imagine what could have been if I were consistent...

Going is baseline, if your routine sucks, diet sucks (especially diet) and you don't get enough sleep you are wasting your time.
