I suppose you get shit food and little sleep, so it's far from optimal I guess. If you're lacking discipline to get fit on your own it might be worth it though.

    >Tell him: "Shrink, I want to kill"
    >I mean it! I want to eat dead burned babies, have blood and guts hanging from my teeth!
    >Then I start jumping up and down shouting "Kill! Kill!"
    >Then the shrink started jumping up and down and we were both shouting, "Kill! Kill!"
    >All of a sudden, the door swings open
    >Sergeant walks in
    >Puts his arm around me
    >Says, "Son, you're our boy!"
    >Tells me he has one final question, Have I ever been arrested?
    >Start telling him the story about the shovels and rakes (and other implements of destruction) and the garbage
    >Sergeant stops me and asks if I was convicted
    >Start telling him the story about the 27 8x10 color glossy photographs (with circles and arrows drawn on them) and the blind judge with his seeing eye dog

Alright man, just for you, a little bit more:
        >Look over at Group W bench. It's where they put you if you might not be moral enough to join the military
        >Go over there and sit down
        >All kinds of mean nasty people around me. Mother rapers, father killers, father rapers! All sitting on the bench right next to me
        >The biggest, meanest, nastiest, hairiest father raper of them all comes up to me and asks what I got
        >Tell him I got nothing, I had to pay a $27 fine and pick up some garbage
        >Asked me what I did
        >Littering
        >They all move away from me on the bench
        >Until I said, "And creating a nuisance" And they all came back
        >Had a great time talking with them until the Sergeant comes back with some papers and pencils
        >Says: "KIDS, I need you to fill out these forms"
        >I look over the form, seems standard, until the end
        >On the back of the form
        >In the middle
        >Underlined
        >Parenthesis
        >Quotated, read the following words:
        >Have You Rehabilitated yourself?
        >I stood up right then and there and said the sergeant he had a lot of damn gall to ask me if I rehabilitated myself
        >I'm sitting there on the Group W bench with a bunch of father rapers and they think I'm not moral enough to join the Marine Corps because I was a litterbug all because the dump was closed the day after thanksgiving??
        >Sergeant looks at me and says they don't like my kind here
        >Somewhere in Washington DC is a file with my name on it that says I am not moral enough to join the USMC because I am a litterbug

      op writing,

I also just feel lost in life, and have been procrastinating for so long to do anything, and im 23 in a few more months. I have no real skills, and I just work in retail. my only passion really is weightlifting, and have been doing that for 2 years now. besides that though, I have nothing. im not interested in going back to school, im not very smart and I have never enjoyed doing school work. I barely even showed up to HS half the time, its a wonder how I even have a HS degree.
so I was thinking maybe joining the army would maybe give me some direction in life, and some kind of purpose, or just a good experience... something. I feel like im wasting my life, and idk what to do. I have no guidance.

You will just be a drag on your unit. Don't be that guy. What do you want to do ultimately? Think about it. Try to get a job at a gym while you think about it so you have an income and some experience. Feeling lost at 23 is pretty normal, and you are still super fricking young. I am 33, and took a long route to get where I am, but I am really happy with how things turned out. Don't sweat it, bro

im not sure what I want to do. honestly, I really dont. I can't sit and think of what kind of job I would want to do, I dont really care for any of them. I just do them so im at least out the house, and I pay what little bills my mom makes me pay. the only real thing I enjoy is lifting, and listening to music. but even that is starting to wear off in some ways... I im not making the progress I would like to be making and feel like im just not cut out for it. maybe im just a genetic dead end loser.

idk what I want, anon. or what I should do. I blame a lot of it on not having a dad growing up, but I dont use that excuse anymore--it is what it is, ive been dealt the cards already, no use in complaining about them.

It's legitimately all good. If you want some Dad advice, it doesn't matter if you feel like doing it or not, do it anyway. And when you get out of this rut (and you will), you will be glad you kept moving forward. Go out and volunteer somewhere to help animals or kids. You're going to feel listless anyway, might as well be helpful, too. You'll be all right, man

OP don't listen to half of these losers. I've been in the USMC for 7 years now. I'm a combat engineer, so no im not a full on grunt ZOGBOT but I certainly have a combat arms job. I just got accepted to lat move to EOD as well. It's 100% what you make of it. I've become a MCIWS, which is like a lifeguard on fricking crack as well as a scout swimmer. You can get HITT certified which is like usmc crossfit. We have these giant shipping containers full of barbells only those guys can have access to for certain hours. No im not 100% injury free but I'm certainly healthier than my peers because I don't dip or smoke and don't drink. Being fit does matter but you'll realize the job comes first but you have to MAKE time to really stay in shape, as in go to the gym.

so overall you think joining the military can be a good thing? I mostly made this thread thinking I maybe I just need to get away from my daily life and do something drastic like that. perhaps ill learn something along the way, and find some kind of purpose I guess.

Big thing is do your research. Have a specific goal in mind. What are you interested in? There are a ton of jobs practically kept secret. If your ASVAB is high enough you can work as a cyber warfare specialist in any branch. eod Is open to army navy and air force right off the bat. If you wanna go USMC, they have a program where once you're enlisted and at least an E5 with 12 college credits, they SEND you to a uni with an ROTC program as like the section leader and then you commission as an officer. It really depends on what you wanna do

Pretty much any 1st world professional army requires from (You) certain physical ability to perform push-ups, running and shit. You won't be able to join US military institutions without having the self discipline to get somewhat fit beforehand.
However, you can easily join Russian military. Just look at the pic related Russian soldiers, they all got fit as frick during the military "exercise" in UKR.

In the Army atm, I can tell you that it's entirely dependent on your job and how predisposed to alcoholism you are.
If you or anyone in your family are alcoholics, DO NOT JOIN. It'll make it way worse or make you an alcoholic.
Get a comfy job that translates to work outside of the military, combat arms will frick your body up real bad. You'll hear people make fun of you sometimes for being a >lmaopog but you'll be way better off. Most jacked dudes I've ever met work in the SSA or at S shops (basically paperwork all the time, very low stress and low chance you'll be up all night). Best jobs to go to are 42A, 17C, 92Y, 94S, and the non-combat engineer series (12K, 12R, 12Q, 12Y)
Worst jobs are combat arms (11B/C, 12B, 13 series, 14 series, etc.)
Don't fall for option 40 or 18X unless you're in shape already and have a good head on your shoulders, if you fail you'll be regular infantry and hate your life. You can always try for SF or Ranger later on in your career and retain your MOS.
Go for an AGR job or Reserve/NG. Active sucks.
Other than that just eat well and sleep as much as you can, workout even if your unit does PT, and network like a mofo so that you can make the Army work for you.

Alcoholism has been a part of just about every military for thousands of years, it’s a work hard-play hard environment full of emotionally underdeveloped people that suddenly have an income and zero expenses so they blow it all on booze and prostitutes, and the peer pressure will get to you unless you have your shit screwed on tight and are mentally disciplined. This has happened to everyone I know.

No one in my unit could get away with drinking 3 beers during the work week. That's not to say, people wouldn't get drunk on Friday or during a 4 day. But alcoholics wouldn't be able to make it more than 6 months with all of the extra duty.

Terrible idea, OP. I thought about it too, believe you me. Thankfully, my having been born a congenital deformity kept me from ever crossing the finish line. In retrospect, I never could've done it to myself. I couldn't even justify the pursuit of my lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer, because of the severe extent to which objectivity in law and order has fallen apart in this country... Becoming a "serviceman" in service to Benjamin Netanyahu would've had me quickly wanting to commit suicide. It would have been a death sentence.

It sounds like you want some kind of meaning. You won't find that in the military. Most people I know who were in the army are suicidal.

    Anonymous

Hey Anon, I've been in the U.S. Army for 8 years now. I'm enlisted and serve as a signals intelligence analyst.

    >can you get IST joining the army?
Yeah kind of. You'll do PT every day—which generally tends to be cardio / bodyweight focused—which doesn't do a lot for mass, but it will make you more fit than the average American (which is not saying much imo). Most soldiers head to the gym after work or during lunch (or sometimes during work if your team/squad leader is cool enough). I think the real value in Army PT is that it's forced on you, and that over time it builds discipline.

    >what's been your experience
Mixed bag. TL;DR it was worth it, but only because I was literally homeless before I enlisted. It gave me three hots and a cot, financial independence (allowing me to save up), unique experiences (I spent three years overseas), and free college (100% paid for + the recommendation letters + the dIvErSiTy admissions bump, which got me into a top 25 uni where I am now). On the other hand, though, three of my friends are dead now (one KIA, two by suicide after deployments; turns out putting warheads on foreheads/seeing the aftermath isn't always great for your mental health) and I feel really isolated, bitter, and unrelatable to the rich moronic college kids I spend my days next to now.

    >is it worth it?
I think it depends anon. I will say that my current place in life—about to graduate without any debt from a prestigious school, going to a "good" job after graduation, and living independently in an apartment 100% paid for by my GI bill BAH downtown in a "nice" city—was plainly not imaginable while I was being busy homeless and flunking out of high school (tl;dr I tested well but graduated with a 2.9 GPA and obviously didn't have the money/academics to go to school). I think the Army (or military more generally) works as a good "reset" button for life; if that's what you want, then you should do it. "Comment too long" bye gonna go PR

Former Royal Marine here, so not US military but can hopefully give some good advice.
    >can you get IST joining the army?
Yeah, a lot of legs and lungs that will give your VO2 a hell of a boost. Trade off being that you will do plenty field phys with weight and shit footwear, leaving you with mobility issues later in life should you pursue it as a career.
    >is it worth it?
Just to get fit? No, not at all. You'd be going in with the wrong intentions and probably not make it past 1st/2nd phase training. Better off looking at some conditioning programs developed by former special forces and doing that in your freetime, whilst having your freedom and life.

    Anonymous

Currently enlisted and been in for about 4 years as a Forward Observer theres definitely some benefits like PT discipline thats been stated by others in this thread but ultimately if you aren't going for another reason I don't suggest joining. You can get far more fit more easily with the freedom of civilian life. The PT doesn't do much for building mass its mostly running and bodyweight excercises. For it was a net positive experience with some low lows scattered throughout but I got to do things I never would have and go places I never would have gone.

Tldr: not worthit for fitness but not too bad for short term career

I'm not military but worked at a small start up that was founded by a few former special forces guys who were in insane shape. They could nearly sprint a full 3 miles and then churn out 20 full ROM pullups without a problem.

From what I gathered, you join the military if you genuinely want to be a soldier. If you don't actually want to be a soldier, it'll be miserable for you and you probably won't get far, just waste 4-6-8 years of your life.

Fitness, especially that level of fitness, requires good discipline which the military will teach you. But if you just stop being a frickhead you can teach it to yourself, anything is possible.

So my suggestion is instead of signing a 4-year contract for a near minimum wage job - take some time to instill rigorous discipline in yourself. Wake up and run every morning for months and don't be a pussy and cop out

Even E1s make the equivalent of about 40 thousand dollars a year with their housing, medical, and food paid for and get a month of vacation and 4 day weekends every month.
