Help. I have tried getting my shit together, went to the gym, built a good physique, enrolled in University, saved up some money from part-time work, made some real life friends etc. but now I just want to go back to playing all day.

Sane advice, doesn't mean it's gonna work. Sometimes it's more effective just to sacrifice a day, or a half and just binge it.
But yeah, I've been addicted to many things, vidya is by far the strongest addiction to kick. Except maybe for heroin, haven't been addicted to that, still, who knows...

How do you have time to play all day? I can play for a few hours after work a couple nights a week. Besides that I’m always working out, working, or studying. I wish I could spend a whole day gaming.

      >enroll in university (free here)
      >let financially supporting parents think you are actually studying
      >do nothing but play all day for 3 years
      >drop the bomb on parents that you did nothing at all
      >convince them that you were heavily depressed due to the pandemic and are finally trying now
I could repeat the same for the next 3 years, basically do nothing but then I would be 26 and probably kill myself. Videogame addiction more or less ruined my life and it's coming back.

You don’t get bored? I gamed a ton all through high school and now if I play on the weekend it’ll be like 3-4 hours then I’m just bored. Seems like all the games nowadays suck. I’ll only play if friends are online usually.

The alternative is even more boring. Working out, studying, cleaning the house, cooking, drawing, going out with your friends, hiking, nothing really beats grinding some videogame.

Why don't you do the exact same thing, but study like 1 hour a day so you can pass your exams?
That's what I did. My life was basically 12 hours of runescape, 2 hours of gym, 2 hours of school and like 8 hours of sleep. The same can be said for most of my classmates too, at least the non normies. I still got acceptable grades

The key is to realize that life itself is like a video game. All the methods you use to powerlevel in a game also works in real life. You just need to study the systems which make up your life to figure out the meta for IRL.

        Example:
I enlisted in the Navy in 2004, did 8 years, got out with $200,000 saved up and the equivalent of a Bachelors in IT through experience plus 60% disability, got a couple associates degrees in CS and CIS, went back to work for the government as a disabled vet contractor married to a 1/2 injun girl (who was the CFO aka accountant), now we're millionaires lol.

Similarly, there are legal ways to dramatically reduce the taxes you pay, to ruin the lives of libtards in your area, to get shitskins sent to prison, to legally ethnically cleanse an area. You just need to figure out the meta.

Kek, I did the same but got study benefits from the state and worked as an research assistant.
Finally decided to just go into e-commerce at age 26, life is pretty alright right now.
If you feel the urge to return to your old ways just think about what you already achieved. Think about the progress you're making. May sound cliche but meditation and other mindfulness practices help to not get overwhelmed by emotional impulses and withstand them. If you already gave in it can also help you to quickly return on your current path.

You need to keep going anon. You only play vidya to fill empty time. Figure out something else more productive to do with your time instead.
You're young, these are the years you need to use to setup the rest of your life. You literally cannot afford to spend so much time playing vidya.
You need a goal, and use your time to reach that goal as soon as you can.
My goal is to build enough wealth (prolly 600k-1mil AUD worth) so I can not have to worry about working 5 days a week, I could work 3 instead, and live a moderately comfortable lifestyle. Only then, I will have enough time to indulge with my love of vidya. I want to play the classics, but I can't, my subconscious is too stressed to truly enjoy them. Once I reach my semi retirement, I will be able to enjoy vidya to the fullest extent.

I work a full time job, go to the gym 5-6 days a week, read for an hour+ a day, and still easily have time for an hour of gaming while watching youtube/listening to podcasts and eating to wind down after work, and a few hours on the weekend. I also have a networth in the top 5% for my age bracket despite being lower middle-class even 5 years ago due to buying and hodling crypto at the right times with my savings

You can be a perfectly normal, functional and successful person while still doing things you enjoy like gaming OP. I think in your case they may be a symptom and not a disease. Obviously self control is important here. In my case gaming helps to take the edge off of having to deal with clown world insanity on a daily basis

This tbh, I have problems in life with procrastination and gaming addiction and truth be told both are typically indications of deficiencies in emotional regulation.

People often wish to ascribe addictions to poor morals or laziness but the truth is that though many of them finding themselves persisting due to that they're often not started due to that.

Keep pushing with the positive habits, only game in moderation, if you can't keep with that, talk to a therapist about it.

It's alright "in moderation", meaning if you did your chores, did your work, did everything else first and just have some time to chill out, vidya away.
As long as it doesn't interfere with anything else.
I only allow myself to open Skyrim if I already worked out (and did everything else I must) for the day, feeling a hulking barbarian while your own muscles are feeling pumped and sore hits way different.

I don't know if this is of use to anyone, but I "solved" my video game addiction by only allowing myself to play one game, Tetris. Eventually the fun turns into a dedicated practice experience and it becomes akin to practicing an instrument. I don't allow myself any other game whatever so my brain knows what it's getting itself into when it craves pushing buttons.
You don't necessarily have to play Tetris, but I highly recommend something that you can engage with for years. Minecraft may not be bad for this, I don't know for sure though.

      As an addendum:

You absolutely need to sell or get rid of all of your games that aren't related to your dedicated game. Both physical and digital media. It's like an alcoholic owning a filled liquor cabinet; you're guaranteed to ruin the process for yourself at some point.

Get a wife. That will kill most of your video game time. I used to game quite a bit, but now I hardly ever do it. Also, wake up earlier, that way you'll be tuckered out and not want to stay up late and game.

Although I don't see the problem with playing for a few hours a week with the bros.

    >Girl passes out and I take her to bed, come back and game with the boys for a few hours, go back to bed with the mrs.
    Feels good.

      honestly this.

Since moving in with my gf, I reduced alone game time to almost zero
I still meet my friends one or two evenings per week just to play for a few hours

when I look back this feels so much better and healthier right now, I don't even have a guilty conscience afterwards any more
now when I think of playing games it feels like a social activity with a purpose and not like wasting my time. I actually am excited now for the game nights

Right, that's a good summary of how I feel as well. My bros and I hop on discord for three to four hours per week of gaming per week. I maybe spend a total of six hours per week total gaming.

I used to love playing twitchy FPS games but I am honestly shit at them now as I don't have time to practice and I've aged out of the reaction time and I also used to play Paradox games, but now I have no desire to spend six hours sitting in front of a map. I'd rather just read a book or go for a hike. Every game I've bought recently has been a huge waste of money and I'm honestly done playing anything beyond slow shooters like Hell Let Loose where it doesn't matter if I can't play it every week or not.

        >Get a wife
I am 5'8" with a 4/10 face, no girl has ever been interested in me romantically.

Eh, keep trying. Hike, camp, workout, cook, join some rec activities or arts classes at your park district. Soon you'll have a packed schedule and no time to game.

Its a waste of life. If I could go back and never play a video game again I would. Thousands of hours just gone, for what. WAHOO BING BING? I barely even remember what I did in most games and what I do remember I dont enjoy thinking about. I could have done so much more, but instead i have just months and months of life where I spent it pretending to be on an adventure instead of actually doing it

Human beings have always wasted time throughout history. Reading, philosophy, art, music, etc. were all considered time wasting activities at one point or another. Your attitude is what's making you miserable, not the games. Do whatever thing you'd rather be doing.

Video games are one of the few easy positive reinforcement feedback loops in this world. People used to practice music or art or other skills and it would take years to be seen as competent by the community. With games you level up and the game tells you good job and your character gets bigger numbers and it feels so fricking good. Or with competitive games you beat other players and your brain feels like it's conquered other humans; you're winning at evolution right? One has to acknowledge that video games are just an easy dopamine fix, but the problem with any easy fix is addiction.

stfu and just play games you fricking moron if you want. if you dont, don't. its LITERALLY that simple
my life (your life) doesnt magically get better once you stop playing. if something it will probably just stagnate and get worse.

i have not noticed any difference in the quality of my life even though i have had stages where i play 6, 8, 12, and up to 16 hours a day vs casual. Right now I have played around 3-5 hours a week the past couple years and im in the worst phase of my life ever. video games are not the problem. you are the problem.
