Vitamin D

How much do you take? How much vitamin K in addition, if any?

Also what level of blood vitamin D you consider safe for yourself? Studies say (150 ng/l is the toxicity limit).

Atm I take 5000 ie daily and no bloodwork done.

I've been taking 5000 IU D3 for 16 months. Finally bothered to check my levels and got this.
I'm thinking I should up my dose.

200lbs 6'1 never in the sun.

I am deficient. Started last week at 20k but it was not enough to cover my symptoms. I feel much better at 30k IUs a day or 20k IUs + half an hour of sun a day.
When I reach good levels then either 10k IUs or half an hour sun a day will be sufficient.

      Started at 10k*

      6000-7500 iu of Vit D
      200-300mcg of k2

for the last 2 years or so

Why take K2 when you can eat a small piece liver and an egg yolk daily and get a bunch of other noooootrients as well?

        Anonymous

i do eat liver but i only eat about 3-5 ounces per week for vit A and copper. liver is relatively low in k2 in the amounts that i am eating

i do eat eggs but it can be difficult to ascertain how much k2 is in the egg due to the diet that the chicken is fed. i just play it safe and supplement with k2.

since supplementing, i do not get any plague (calcium buildup) on my teeth even behind my lower teeth where my tongue is, which was always a problem area when i went to the dentist

That's interesting because I'm getting plaque even with 2 litres of milk a day. Gonna keep K2 supplementation in mind for the future.

i would argue that k2 is a necessity if you're supplementing with vit d to avoid calcium deposits going elsewhere other than your bones

i take the thorne vit d + k2 supplement, one small bottle will last you around 1.5 years if you take 2-3 drops per day so it's extremely cheap

Can I get a QRD on the relation between vitamin D (and K?) and tooth plaque? This is interesting, never heard about it before. My girlfriend struggles with it a bit, while I don't. (I supplement D but not K).

yeah so basically i've been taking vitamin d on and off for about 5-7 years particularly during winter months and i noticed that i always had really bad plague around my teeth which was a sign of calcium build up

fast forward to 2019/2020, did some research and found that k2 (specifically the mk4 version of k2) is meant to be taken with vitamin d as vitamin d enhances the absorption of calcium from foods that you eat and k2 ensures that this calcium is predominantly absorbed into your bones, not elsewhere like your arteries or in your kidneys, blood vessels etc. i eat quite a bit of yogurt and drink milk and whey etc - so i ingest a fair bit of calcium.

after supplementing with k2 for around 3 months, i noticed that when i flossed, i no longer had bits of plague in between my teeth and when i did my last dental check up - they took photos and showed how my teeth looked before the clean in 2021 vs 2022 and it was a huge difference - i basically had 0 plague on my teeth. because it is preventing absorption of calcium into other soft tissues, you're also much less likely to get kidney stones

tl;dr take vitamin k2 (mk4) and thank me in 3-6 months

also sorry i'm a moron it's plaque not plague lol

just do a quick google search and you'll find heaps of articles by dentists and other people supporting the use of vitamin k2 to prevent plaque build up on teeth (and by doctors to prevent plaque build up in your arteries)

I recently learned this around June this year when I went to my first check up in years. I would take Vitamin D daily for a long time but my blood test came back on the low end.

Next check up will show if supplementing with K2 made a difference.

yeah the thing about the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K2) is that they need to be all taken together either through your diet or in supplement form to function effectively.

if you're pumping heaps of vitamin D but aren't consuming enough of the other, consider upping the dosages of the other fat soluble vitamins and see if that helps

                Anonymous

oh also, because they're fat soluble, do not consume them on an empty stomach - consume them with a fatty meal like steak and eggs because that will aid in absorption

i'd recommend taking Vit D and K2 at lunch because vit d can disrupt your sleep if taken at night time and taking vit e and vit a at dinner. or just do whatever works for you idgaf

    20000 IU daily
    200 mcg K2
    600 mg magnesium

I take it after I eat some eggs as D3 is fat soluble. Recent data says 10k UI is actually underdosing, as long as you're getting K2 to stop calcification issues you're more than safe

This. I would also recommend boron and beta carotenes. Boron also helps to put all that calcium into bones. Carotenes needed for retinol production. You can easily overdose on retinol, but if you aupplement beta carotenes, your body makes exactly as much, as you need.

When i was taking 4k iu pills, my level was just 26ng/ml. Now taking 10k iu gell capts that contain omega 3 and k2mk7 to have it in 70s

    DO NOT DO THIS

I got kidney stones because of D supps. When I woke up to piss in the morning I literally thought someone was hiding behind the shower curtains and cut my stomach open with a knife. I passed out and came to instantly covered in puke and blood from smashing my forehead into the toilet bowl. I had to sit in the hospital waiting room for what felt like 2 hours (more like 20 minutes) with people begging the staff to let me ahead of them. The only good thing that came of it was being hooked up to morphine and feeling happy for once in my shit life.

Its calcifying in your kidney and the longer you take Vit.D the worse its going to be. Let me tell you firsthand that a giant spiky mass trying to fit into a tiny tube that is also blocking a full bladder is the worst pain imaginable, period. Worse than childbirth, worse than a gunshot wound, worse than losing a limb. You will wish for death, and again when they have to shove a laser up into your wienerhole to blast it apart. I cannot believe people like you are stupid enough to do this to themselves, I would book a doctors appointment yesterday and throw those pills into the fireplace.

magnesium actuvates d3 and turns it into a form that doesn't increase calcium absorbtion. k2 and boron make sure it won't be in rogans like kidney and will go into bones.
you fricked up. kidney stones is prbbly not the worst of your problems as you have calcified arteries and soft tissue in joint. Good luck.

You should look at the highest amount of vitamin D in any one food and not take supplement doses more than the amount of that food you would eat in a day that because you're just stressing your liver in the end. Stop falling for shiny packaged with the word chelated in bold and just think things through.

I get a Vitamin D check added on to my TRT bloodwork every three months.

I do 5000iu orally per day, and I also do 200,000 iu injections once a month for 3 months during the winter (November, December, January). That's kept me at good levels for the last few years.
