    Please explain this to me

      >6 million steps
I mean there's no way, maybe 200k/300k max, and that's being generous.

Big guy, is there something you're trying to tell me here?

          Anonymous

Listen, if that guy really is walking as he claims (and that's a big if), the rate he presented would just be impossible to sustain. It's completely unrealistic.

            Anonymous

We know plenty of people who were there during his walks. It would be crazy to suggest they are simply making things up for collective gain

Where does OP get the calories for such exercise? I've never seen any evidence of the quantities of fuel required to sustain that activity.

        Anonymous

I basically get paid to walk around in airconditioning. 6 million is chump change

why does the risk of diabetes slightly rise after 12k steps again?

      Anonymous

That’s a really tiny difference, more likely is that it basically levels off after a certain point

      Anonymous

could be bias from people with diabetes trying to exercise more to keep down blood sugar

      Anonymous

Its not that the risk increases, it's the uncertainty in the data increases (the grey band). The slight uptick in the blue curve around 16,000 steps isn't statistically significant so I wouldn't pay it any attention.

      Not OP btw

Correlation, causation, etc. All your image is showing is that exercise is beneficial, which we already know.

I don't understand these graphs, can someone explain

      Anonymous

the graph represents risk/average risk for each condition
1 is the normal amount of risk, if you're below it means you're less at risk and viceversa

        Anonymous

is the implication here that the 'average' person is where the line crosses 1?

I can't imagine the average America is at 8k steps daily

LMAO nice confidence interval you got there bro. Also it's pretty obvious that depressed people don't go out doing 10k steps, moron

      Anonymous

If someone is depressed do you think walking 10k steps in nature will make them worse or better

        Anonymous

better, but it's not something you can deduce from this graph

        Anonymous

I'm not arguing about the possibile effects, just that a diagnosed depressive disorder individual will never have the motivation to do that thus they'll never show up in the higher steps category

Purely a guess, but I assume it means anything below the red line is within error of zero? Because the y axis is unitless

Tangentially related but who the frick invented the 10k daily steps meme? That's 5 miles or 8 kilometers, who has time for that every day.

homie that's 10k steps over the course of a day, not your normal walking + 8km

It's winter as frick now and walking is shit.

          Anonymous

Why does it being winter matter? The more you exercise the warmer your body will be. Being heavier from the muscle mass will make you warmer. Actively moving will make you warmer. Putting on a jacket will make you warmer. I go for walks at midnight in shorts during this time of year

So layer up, get a waterproof jacket/trousers...blah blah blah, all I hear from you lot is excuses. "Oh, takes too long...too cold". You could be fit AF in about a month but you literally CANNOT BE BOTHERED.

even better, walking while it is snowing/cold af is really nice
almost no people outside and you can put on a comfy jacket

I get it man, hard to think with a brain that cold, here I'll give you a booster:
            >not being physically subjected to random demands and circumstances, and being able to decide how to exercise
            >having the option to work from home and saving time on commutes
Alright that was 2, I'm relaying it to you, keep going.

oh no the sissy does not want to go outside! A man could just own his own business and set his own parameters, but you didn't think of that did you, pansy?

nah I'm just fricking with you, working outside is great really, it's just so easy to bait you people with the old mike rowe thought school of hard jobs and manliness... you attach identity to employment, it's funny and a bit sad but mostly amusing... gotta go ran out of firewood hehe

I am incredibly lazy lol. I am recovering from a 2 month bender. I have yet to meet someone who has outworked me on a jobsite. I just do not understand the idle sissy mindset

      >who has time for that every day.

Anyone that lives in a walkable area has time for it. People that live in walkable areas have longer commutes to work compared to driving-only areas, but they basically have a gym routine baked into their daily lives. They get their exercise passively and don’t have to find motivation for artificial gym time. So, comparing commute time in walkable vs non-walkable areas isn’t really apples to oranges. Yes, it takes time to walk to work and walk 5 miles a day. But that’s time you don’t need to force yourself onto a treadmill, so it cancels out.
