Believe it or not aging is a way easier problem to solve than cancer.

I'm not saying I'm hopeful, but I wouldn't be surprised if we solved aging first.

        Anonymous

How can you possibly know which one is easier to solve when neither has been solved?

          Anonymous

          1. Cancer isn't one consistent problem like aging is. It's like hundreds of different problems with different causes, most of which have to do with protein folding and errors in DNA.

          2. We can study animals that either don't age or have the ability to reverse the aging process (marine sponges, flatworms, jellyfish, hydras, etc.) and learn how their biology differs from ours, and the commonality between their biologies. Through that we can begin to infer how to reverse the natural aging process.

            Anonymous

we can only get to the point of slowing aging, reversing it is completely out of our biomechanics

              did you read the article?

              > Sinclair and his team report that not only can they age mice on an accelerated timeline, but they can also reverse the effects of that aging and restore some of the biological signs of youthfulness to the animals.

              >They mimicked the effects of aging on the epigenome by introducing breaks in the DNA of young mice. (Outside of the lab, epigenetic changes can be driven by a number of things, including smoking, exposure to pollution and chemicals.) Once “aged” in this way, within a matter of weeks Sinclair saw that the mice began to show signs of older age—including grey fur, lower body weight despite unaltered diet, reduced activity, and increased frailty.

              >The rebooting came in the form of a gene therapy involving three genes that instruct cells to reprogram themselves ... ... Using three of the four factors turned back the clock about 57%, enough to make the mice youthful again.

              >In 2020, Sinclair reported that in mice, the process restored vision in older animals; the current results show that the system can apply to not just one tissue or organ, but the entire animal. He anticipates eye diseases will be the first condition used to test this aging reversal in people, since the gene therapy can be injected directly into the eye area.

they've already started trials in primates

You’re an idiot. Preventing cancer is way harder than aging.

      Dave

People in general don't understand the multifaceted, exponential risk of death from aging. You don't really die from much other than aging. If we cured cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, such that 0 people ever died from them, we'd only increase average life expectancy by less than 3 years.

As you get older, basically anything will kill you. Common cold? You get pneumonia and die. UTI, it gets in your blood, you go septic and die. You trip and fall? You've got a 10% chance of dying from infection.

Yes we need to cure/treat diseases, but until we can halt and reverse the damage caused by aging we're not going to put much of a dent in life expectancy.

        Anonymous

Never thought about it that way. Getting rid of aging would increase your chances of dying in a car crash by like 4000%. If this doesnt make sense to you just think about it some more.

          Dave

You misunderstood. The point isn't that removing certain death factors would increase other death factors, it's that aging exponentially increases your risk of death from any given factor. A 1 year old has a 1 in 100 billion chance of dying from tripping and falling. A 30 year old, 1 in 100 million, a 50 year old 1 in 100 thousand, a 90 year old, 1 in 10. And it's like that with every possible cause of death.

Aging reversal is the thing I'm most hopeful for. Luckily I'm a zoomer so hopefully I'll be alive to get it if it starts working.

Retirement ain't so great. Better to stay in your 30s forever and it's not like you'd get to retire nowadays anyway unless you save and invest significantly.

earn enough money so you can retire for a few years then go back to work, besides we won't get to retire on a state pension lol the entire system will collapse before that.
what i'm concerned about is if people actually become immortal, what will the young 20 year old just out of grad school do when he has to compete with a 300 year old with 250 years of experience for a job?

people will still die accidental deaths right...
Or like...murder/killing will still be possible.
    So who cares?
In the end it's not like we'll all be stuck together forever till end of time with other insufferable c**ts. We can still murder each other.
Which means maybe some people will clean up their acts once they realize the only threat left now is other people.

You'd not be able to turn 16, you still have a fully grown skeleton. More importantly, your mind will always be adult, you're jaded by experience, you will never be a child again.

"reverse aging". No. Once the telomeres are cut short, they aren't going back to what they were before.

What you can do though is take NMN and Resveratrol and massively slow down aging.

      Anonymous

Telomerase can extend telomers, we just can't activate it in controlled way that won't give you cancer in the long run.

You are right about NMN and resveratrol, just add metformin, alfa-liponic acid and healthy lifestyle and you can reach 80-90 years of age with relatively good health. For most people reading this, that is over 40 years till scientists figure out the telomerase stuff. We won't be able to reverse aging to the point of becoming teens again, byt realistically you could look and feel like 30-40 year old while being over 100. The first person who will live past 120 was already born. In the 2100's there will be a possibilty for biological immortality for the rich/elites, and in 2200's for 10-20% of population.

First off all you should do a bloodwork done regularly (at least once a year) to check if you are deficient in any microelements and vitamins, and then supplement them accordingly. I'm talking about stuff like calcium, iron, iodine, fat soluble vitamins (ADEK).

Have good quality sleep and eat a healthy balanced diet to maintain BMI around 23-25 along with moderate physical activity.

Then there are the supplements I mentioned, you can search them online no problem: resveratrol, NMN, alfa-liponic acid and metformin. All of them basically regulate your metabolism, cell metabolism, DNA repair processess and probably other not yet fully understood functions.

The topic was longevity, not being the swolest mf in the vincinity. It's common knowledge that excess body mass (that includes both being a fat frick and overly muscular) puts extra strain on cardiovascular and many other systems in your body. Being jacked is not optimal if you plan to live as long as possible.

you need your muscles as you age
I have had to take care of elderly people and it is a fricking mess because they can barely walk by the time they hit their 80s
            stop recommending this catabolic shit

Old people are like that because they are sedentary in the first place. Besides I said that excessive muscle mass is bad, not that muscles are bad. If you are physically active and train on a regular basis no supplement is going to magically turn you into auschwitz mode.

These people can't figure out that traditional foods are healthy and man-made foods are unhealthy. They have a deeply ideological transhumanist bent and will never figure out how to age well as a result. As public health gets worse and worse they will increasingly desperately throw money at drugs and meme foods only to get cancer at 60 and die to a common cold. Such is the nature of the midwit Science Truster.
