What are spotting rules?

What are spotting rules? Some dude asked me to spot him 2 plate bench for reps and I did, but I'm not strong enough to lift 2 plates. How do I spot him? I just grabbed the bar and directed it to the rack with him at the 5th fail/half rep? Is that correct?

I think you did right. Usually if someone fails a rep, 10-20lbs of force should be sufficient to help them up.

Okay thanks, I figure unless it's a muscle rip or something the full lift isn't needed

You'll pretty much never need to upright row a bar when spotting. Even in that worst case scenario where you have no assistance to get it back up you just need to be able to hold onto the bar while the person lifting slides out from under the bar so they're safe

Best spotting I like to get would be to not touch the bar until the person lifting tells you to grab it or the weight starts to move back down and it's clear the rep was failed

          This
And frick spotters who touch the bar before I say something. I'm not failing I'm pushing through the rep. Don't fricking touch the bar until I tell you too!

Damn spotting is serious business we should make sure everyone knows this stuff.

You don't need to be strong enough to haul the weight yourself. You just need to be able to make up the difference. As a hypothetical example, let's say there's someone who can bench 315 max and you're spotting them at 325. All you need to do is add 10 lbs of force to what he's already doing to get it back up.

Unless the guy you're spotting is just a total butthole who decides to go dead-fish on you and expects you to row the weight off his chest while trying you're best not to tea-bag him with your sweaty gooch

Ask how many reps they're going for and ask if they want a lift. I tell people I won't touch the bar until they ask for help.

You should always refuse to spot anyone. It's dangerous for both of you and always unnecessary. Just bench in a rack. Lift offs are gay, and spotters interfere with the set and they can't even save you if the lift actually goes wrong and you just drop the bar.
I just bench in an ER rack. I will never ask for a spotter and I will never spot.

I find that psychological benefit for having a spotter with you is huge for making increases in your numbers

What psychological benefit? I feel less safe with a spotter and they're a distraction and FRICKING INTERFERE WITH THE SET. And most spotters are moronic and hover over you.
A spotter is literally more dangerous than benching alone in a rack and even more dangerous than benching in a rack with a spotter. Frick spotters.

Only if you have a shit spotter
          >And most spotters are moronic and hover over you.
Literally tell the person spotting you how you want them to spot and you won't have an issue

I don't see the problem. Want a spotter? Ask for one
Don't want one? Don't use one

Personally I go up to the biggest guy at the gym and ask him to call me a cute twink, it really gives me the psychological comfort

Amen. I thought I was the only one. I don't want to get sued by some fricking butthole who hurts himself trying to ego lift more then he can handle so he can brag to his boyfriend. Use a machine or pay a trainer if you think you're Arnold.

keep in mind the goal of spotting is essentially to hold the bar for long enough so that he can get out from under it.
Don't touch the bar unless he signals you to or the bar starts going down when he's trying to push it up
Don't put your hands on the bar once you've lowered it to him
Don't put your hands on the bar on the final grindy reps
Don't stand too far over if he's doing well with the reps, don't stand far back though

Oh damn I might've touched the bar too early then. I hope I didn't ruin it for him!

Just let them fricking have an accident. No one should be bench pressing in the first place.
