correct form, slowly increasing weight from outset, adequate stretching (regular yoga is good for this), allowing adequate recovery time for muscle groups

The easiest way to avoid injury is to just not lift giga heavy. Eventually it catches up to you even if you are taking every correct preventative measure.

Squatting and deadlifting are probably the two best strength exercises to help you age gracefully.

I hope you realise just how many people get back and spine injuries from picking up a propane tank or gardening, or have chronic back pain every day that could have been PREVENTED by being able to deadlift 100kg safely.
Every time we mention deadlifting a lot of people immediately imagine some skeleton twink worming a 180kg 1 rep max with some massive belt on.

do farmer's walks, kettlebell swings, back extensions, and burn your abs. deadlifts are completely unnecessary.

How are you going to do farmers walks without deadlifting the weight up?
          >inb4 that doesn't count cuz the farmers walks would be with lighter weight
Nobody is saying old men should be trying to go 1 RM deadlift PRs.

deadlifts are probably the most important excerise, at least up to an intermediate level
even just getting the muscle memory on how to properly pick something up while keeping a neutral spine is extremely important to not snapping your shit up in daily life

The Starting Strength model is unironically perfect for old people
    >Put on more mass to increase your durability and then lift heavy under close supervision by trainers to build up your bone density

This plus loads of walking plus a low impact form of cardio like swimming is ideal.

Protect your joints at all costs. Muscle recovers quickly, joints take forever to recover, and as you age it takes even longer.
