What is the ideal rest time between each set?

There has been a lot of talk lately about resting 4 to 5 minutes between sets. What do you think of this? Obviously aiming for hypertrophy.

I particularly find 5 minutes adequate for compound exercises.

I rest for as long as I need which is anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes typically. Some deadlift days are almost 10 minutes on the final sets though.

    >5 min for heavy compound shit
    >3.30 min for medium compound shit
    >1.30-2.30 for isolation
if you are only resting 1 minute between sets or supersetting you are not lifting hard enough

The longer you rest the more stimulative each set will be, assuming you train hard.
Of course you can rest shorter & simply do one more set than if you rested long & the end result will be the same.
Additional benefit of resting longer than 2-3 minutes for bodybuilding is super small, arguably not worth it. Actually an ideal scenario would be to superset two things, resting a minute or two between them both so you're getting good rest but also being productive in the gym. I have a busy gym though so not an option for me.

It doesn't matter for hypertrophy. You could rest for 20 minutes or 1 minute, wouldn't matter.

I dont rest much because being surrounded makes me uncomfortable.
I dont care because I can lift my 5 rep max twice and then I take out 10kg and do 15 or so. Then 12, and finally 8.

    >Consensus Recommendations
    >As a general rule, rest periods should last at least 2 minutes when performing multi-joint exercises. Shorter rest periods (60-90 secs) can be employed for single-joint and certain machine-based exercises. Optimal rest interval duration would also be influenced by the set end point, as longer rest intervals are likely needed when sets are performed to muscular failure.

If you're not panting, you can go finish your next set immediately. Rest when you're out of breath.

I rest anywhere from 5-10 minutes between sets depending how hard I go. If I'm doing heavy singles or doubles it's definitely closer to the 10 min mark.
