I really liked that video. Chatgdp pretty crazy stuff and he makes his story captivating and interesting yet entertaining. Anyway he's as skinny as a twig, frail, skiddish, as pale as a whale, eyes as dead as a dog. Do you really think going bald in his 30s will affect him in any way?

it can give more thorough answers than google and generate stuff for you. AI like this is probably a precursor to everyone having a personal assistant on their phone or computer. some people are already using it to write essays, scripts, emails, etc but it's mostly a cute novelty right now. google and microsoft are at war because they realise AI will be the next internet and smart phone

Useless. Zero understanding of any topic, falsehoods and lies. In one year the hype of LML will die out and rule based logic and AI will come to the forefront again.

take meds. also his role is presenting sciencey stuff to a mass audience. thus he needs to be careful to keep his audience as wide as possible. people vehemently opposed to trans issues / other minorities are an even tinier minority, and fragmented, and thus less worth appeasing than the minorities themselves. simple economics fricko.

Tom, the point is that you look old and your career has gone nowhere so maybe you could abandon this idea that you have to take it in the ass from trannies. I don't like your videos and I think you're a hack who adds nothing; you're a youtube stand-in for something that would otherwise be enriching but we unfortunately don't have the better version of what you are.

But that doesn't matter. What matters is that you need to give up on trying to turn this into a job at the bbc. You're not Attenborough, you're not going to be, and if you don't make peace with that you're just forever going to be an old-looking, red shirt-wearing vision of failure

Intellectualism won't help. You can craft a sort of boundary of the game you're playing and say that because you've said this and they haven't addressed that then you win but it's a distraction from what it really happening.

It's unfortunate that you're like 15 years behind everyone else on the internet because you were off trying to craft an identity.

Tom is that you. Tom maybe it is better to be principled than to try to appease everyone in the hopes that you can turn youtube into a bbc career. 30 years from now you'll have to look at yourself in the mirror and it is possible there is something buried deep within you that wants to fight for an ideal, and that spirit will be deeply ashamed.

Maybe God wants you to look old before your time as a warning to other people about this insipid, vacuous faction-pleasing.

He literally ranted in one of his videos that Germans are evil for having a gendered language.
The homosexual doesn't even speak any languages besides English, yet he decides to make this kind of asinine value judgement about a grammatical feature of a language that he doesn't understand.

He needs to die in a fricking fire.

He's as bad as that one "haha my wife hates me" engineer who's probably into cuckolding.

NTA, but why is it that so many linguistics majors only know one language? I know most of them are relics from early compsci teaching but it seems very strange that so few of them actually apply their knowledge. I'm not saying Tom Scott is one of these people, I don't know how many languages he speaks.

He has no clue what the frick he is talking about and pretends to be some computer science expert.
If anything were at the end of a massive development boom in AI, just because ChatGPT is the only thing normies and "intellectuals" like him have heard about doesn't mean the industry just became a thing. ML has been making insane progress in all fields for 15 years now and the last 5 years or so have been more scaling up model than any breakthrough developments.
They literally just threw warehouses of GPUs, the entire internet and hundreds of millions of dollars in electricity at some gigantic ML model and now act like it's some miracle it can create coherent sentences and answer basic questions. We had NLP models for 25 years that could very likely perform similar to this if given enough compute power. ChatGPT is a little more complex version of "based on the previous words I have generated so far, which of all possible words is the most likely based on the frequency in<insert training data>.
"Solving" human language is just another entry on the long list of things people assume can only be done by insanely intelligent beings, like chess, or image recognition etc., and pretend like human level AGI is here because we managed to solve those problems.

I actually agree. I think the tipping point of AI being here to stay or just a fad will be if OpenAI’s business model is actually sustainable. Right now I imagine they are burning cash and are only being kept afloat by these huge tech companies shoveling money onto the fire. But of course big tech is collapsing too.
The real innovation would be something like chatGPT able to be run by individuals or groups of individuals. OpenAI is a shitty corporation that is neutering the potential of the tech. Stable diffusion was a major win for open source AI, so I’m somewhat optimistic.
It seems like the public opinion on the tech is more of a determining factor than anything else. I imagine OpenAI is only temporarily releasing chatGPT to get the public interested so daddy Microsoft can give them billions.
