Chess is a boring game. Most good chess players, with the exception of the very top, are not high IQ chads like the 1% of great chess players might have you believe. Most chess players I've met were utter morons.

Alot of people seem like utter morons because of abuse that resulted in necessary inefficiencies in the brain for survival. This is how schizophrenia develops, as the brain prunes in hyperdrive. Still, I doubt it is permanent unless it is genetic or you are forced to take drugs that cause catastrophic damage.

Long time chess player and lifter here. Chess does not stimulate the brain. It's a game like any other. You probably get some stimulation in the early learning stages, like with any new activity. After that it's just an addictive dopamine binge. Chess is just as addictive as any drug. DO NOT start playing chess if you're looking for self improvement. You'll just waste years of your life chasing a dopamine high by mating patzers all day. After 10+ years of chess addiction, I wonder where my life would be, how much more successful I might have been, if I had never found this godforsaken game.

Lifting, on the other hand, has been nothing but a positive for me mentally and physically.

When they started looking at how playing videogames affects the brain and thinking they figured that the slow, puzzle games, strategy games, that sort of thing, would show improvements in thinking ability, meanwhile the action games like fps games would give adhd and the like. However, they actually found the exact opposite - fast-paced action games stimulate the brain more and make you better at other intelligence tests.

        https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/12/11/5561

I personally like chess, I actually do think it help me think a little clearer sometimes. But it's a mistake to think that chess is some sort of workout for the mind like weights are for the body.

Slow games inevitably become deconstructed over time into an optimal order of steps. There’s almost always an ideal build path in slower games which reveals itself over time and the strategy component of it completely disappears.
Fast paced games on the other hand have so much variability between matches that, in any given moment, you’re playing in a unique set of circumstances.

You sure it doesn't claim the exact opposite???

"Action video games mainly improve visual attention and muscle coordination"

"Strategy video games mainly improve people’s cognitive processing function, executive function, and memory ability."

You do have fast pacing in chess if you're playing blitz or bullet. Chess is a game like any other, the difference is a much bigger learning curve

What about fast paced strategy games? Would that give the benefits of both? Having to micro a ton of units, while planning economy, and still trying to think ahead of your opponent like for example those Koreans when Starcraft was their national sport.

Most of anyone at the top 1% of almost anything very specific are moronic autists- if they were better at anything more normal they wouldn't be the top 1% of that thing.

intermediate chess is bretty gud cause u just think, no strats, no nothing, pure thinking
master and grandmaster is just pattern/strategy recognition, so chess on GM is like an IQ test, sorta
      yet IQ=/=intelligence, so

Chess is just memorization. The only good thing coming from it were the cold war kinos about Fischer vs Spassky

Chess at a high level is literally just memorization. Do math problems instead of the gimmick game

not at all, it's a fight, you beat the other guy, and he thinks about it. It's up until you start beating NMs IMs and then a GM that real dopamine kicks in, and feels like you're the smartest person on earth.

i agree though if your rating stays the same for more than 6 months then you should reconsider.

You can do both. I study while waiting between sets. I also solve math problems and do puzzles.

It's extreme cringe but if your brain is able to solve problems while you are exhausted it helps you deal with mental pressure down the road.

Fitness and chess are equally for losers. If you want to be mentally in the right place, lift for a couple of years then switch over to a sport. In what other realm other than fitness can some guy make a video titled 'HOW TO GET A GIRLFRIEND' and it's perfectly normal? lmao

Chess is a children's board game. You can tell because most top players become GMs in their early to mid teens.
It's a child's board game that some kids become autistically obsessed with, combined with some favorable brain genetics causes them to become really good.
I say this as someone who plays and follows most of the top players and tournaments.
At the end of the day, grown adults like Vishy Anand are literally playing kids games at age 50 and acting like they are doing something that's totally not a kids game.
No difference to a 50 year old playing counter strike at the pro level and acting all high and mighty, and disproportionately over respected by society because society thinks that chess is some kind of genius activity paralleling curing cancer or discovering something new in quantum mechanics.
It's a fricking kids game lmao
Also, most players are super awkward and autistic in interviews, like they played so much chess during their critical development that they missed out on learning how to socialize normally with others.

By the way you will never be a GM, they operate on a completely different level that you can't comprehend:
