the nutritional value of a given item is not determined by your cultural affinity for it. indeed, as you say, the opposite is true - your cultural affinity for milk is because it is a good source of nutrition.

You have to drink blended up cock-roaches, which isn't food except to animals and poor people. Also, you'll be associated with autistic spazzes like this guy who think culture norms and social behavior are apparently something only stupid people care about, and that it's both possible and remotely human to quantize emotions and attitudes with neat, clean, and wholly arbitrary metrics.

I didn't respond to tone at all, you nerd. I attacked your central thesis - that everything which might be emotional is Le Bad™. Denying emotional value is autistic midwittery invented in movies. Your entire premise is fundamentally wrong because emotional value is important and cannot be overruled by some arbitrary optimization metric (which you can't make objective, but you believe you can, proving that you're a fucking retard). No academic has ever believed that shit, ever, until the post-1990's of hyper-constructivst scientism. Learn something about history, which you clearly know literally nothing about. Your childish utilitarianism isn't even a valid ethnical argument, let alone rigorous science. You're so stuck up your own ass that you can't even identify the point I'm making because you can't even imagine a world where you can't distill every human decision down to an optimization problem, you autistic, spastic gay.

Learn some shit before you pretend to be learned.

                >Just because some other person or some other culture believes something, I must believe it in order to avoid being unthinking cattle?
inability to accept that "acceptable food" is relative to culture - and that culture changes - is a level of retardation that can only be deliberate. it is a level of retardation you adopt to avoid having to admit that every post you have made in this thread was retarded.

but alas you can only compound, not undo, prior retardation

                >I attacked your central thesis - that everything which might be emotional is Le Bad™
                that's not my central thesis.

my central thesis is that the only basis on which to oppose eating [food] over [other food] is emotional, assuming both foods are safe and nutritious (discounting qualia).

if you think your emotional argument over why [food] is better than [other food] is so compelling and rigorous as to stand up to detached and unemotional scientific/pragmatic scrutiny then by all means take your best forlorn shot.

i contend that no such argument exists and it follows with an elegant inevitability that therefore all opposition to roach milk is retarded.

i made no comment on the value of emotions because 1. i don't believe emotions are worthless and 2. i'm not retarded enough to try and discuss a topic that broad in a thread about roach milk where such a topic is irrelevant anyway especially to the point that i am making.

you are not as smart as me and not even as smart as you think you are. your attempt to criticise ivory tower autism fails at the first hurdle. i expect an apology on my desk by monday.

                Anonymous

p.s. how could i possibly be discounting the value (relevance) of emotion when my central thesis is that EMOTION is CAUSING a behaviour?

                fucking retard holy shit.

                think before posting.

of course emotion is relevant. what you call value, which in this context really means a sort of heuristic accuracy, of emotion is obviously relevant in all kinds of situations and obviously imperfect for many well-known reasons.

this argument is so fucking DUMB which is why i would never fucking make it.

if I was smarter I could probably figure out why this is wrong, I can't, but just how the fuck can you say this? are you literally subhuman? drinking crunched up cockroaches is the same as dairy? how?

        Anonymous

        >drinking crunched up cockroaches is the same as dairy?
        they're not the same

it's just that the differences don't matter

        >"i can't articulate it, but i feel like they do"
okay. nobody can make you do anything you don't want to do, but if you can't articulate a rational reason for your behaviour then maybe it's not rational.

        >"reason isn't everything! emotions are important!"
emotions aren't everything either. reason is also important.

that's basically the whole thread up until now and it's the logical endpoint of this discussion. the only reason this thread is so garbage is because of 4chan contrarians who thought they'd caught a postmodernist and couldn't wait to bring out their heavy artillery even if it wasn't relevant.

in truth it's exactly like i said. the question "should we drink roach milk" has a technically correct answer and arriving at the answer is a boring process of maths and science that yields a boring conclusion. the problem occurs when this answer collides with the entrenched interests of wealthy people who spend money to attach an emotional component to the discussion. as you can see here people are already full of emotions about this stupid shit but without a media campaign acting as a bellows the furnace never really gets hot.

        Anonymous

He's being a contrarian to get (You)s. The core of his argument is
        >well you're being lied to by the dairy companies, dairy isn't that healthy for you
        >you're too emotionally attached to food that isn't that healthy because you're racist and fell for Big Dairy's marketing
        >therefore you should try out cockroach milk because ???
        >we should at least try it out even though it has no actual proven health benefits over dairy which at the very least provides a significant source
        >even though in terms of bugs, grasshoppers would provide greater nutritional value, but would require significant genetic modifying to be viable as a food source
        >well you've already eaten the bugs if you've had hotdogs

From there, he can just "intellectually" attack people by claiming their arguments are in bad faith, midwit emotional vomiting, etc. In effect, it's the same deal with arguing with homeopathic/crystal healing types of people. Notice, there's a gigantic jump in logic, cockroaches don't really provide that much nutritional value beyond middling amounts of protein. You need more than just protein, you need things like iron, calcium, the vitamins, etc. This is why there's a gigantic argument against grasshoppers in general, they don't provide enough micro-nutrients that we'd need.

No, it doesn't make sense if you're viewing it from a logically held position. But it does make sense if you see it as someone who's watched one too many Destiny streams, as someone addicted to internet arguments. You're looking at it from the perspective of a normal person, and not some sperglord.

The argument is not that there is anything wrong with bug protein, its that no self-respecting human being should be forced, by market forces, politics, legislation or any other sort of compulsion, to consume it. They wish to preserve the standard of living to which all humans have become accustomed, with us at the top of the food pyramid and the local nature co-opted to serve their needs.

They have the right to it as well, because every previous generation had a right to it. You cannot just tell people
        >You cannot have this
As an outside force and not have it be a self-serving argument biased towards your own point of view. You are arbitrarily deciding against another person's desires based on your own interests, be they economic or moral.

And overriding another person's free will arbitrarily is always wrong.

                c. versicolor spiderlings are notorious for randomly dying. One of them I thought was doing fine, and then one day I just find it on the ground of it's enclosure (they are usually up on the fake plants) and it was dead , the other one didn't eat for a long time, it was very thin even though I regularly left it food, and then one day I just found it dead in it's web, the abdomen looked like it burst open

You're trying to argue against emotions, but it's an emotional endeavor to try and control your emotions. If you knew a damn thing besides larping with your sigma grindset wannabe stoicism, you'd know precisely how and why you're being retarded. You type like someone who's been watching too much destiny/vaush streams, stringing together big words through illogical jumps. All this to justify eating cockroaches, an opinion that is purely contrarian in scope and not something you held prior to this thread. You're not nearly as smart as you think you are.

Ya dig what's being said? Go lift big boy weights

      >You're trying to argue against emotions
are you implying that whatever our emotions tell us to do is always the right thing to do?

      no?

then it is obviously necessary at least in some situations to prevail upon people's capacity for reason and their ability to override - or tolerate - unpleasant emotions because they rationally know there is a purpose worth achieving.

the problem with arguing on IST is that you people have so little insight that many bad arguments that better posters would think of and then discard for being shit you guys actually post, which means i am forced to wade through the vomit of sub-midwits. your ideas aren't even interesting.
