When you're doing situps, are you supposed to inhale when you're coming up or down?

When you're doing situps, are you supposed to inhale when you're coming up or down? Intuition tells me that you should inhale coming up, since that's when you're tensing, and you exhale on the release, but I've also read the opposite.

you inhale once and hold it through the movement, your training your core so you want to brace it, exhale and inhale before the start of each rep

      you can do either
exhale during the exertion and really pull your stomach in
      OR
lightly inhale up, and as you do the rolldown exhale and vacuum your abs in, holding that vaccum in and engaging the abs as you inhale

the point is to train your core to stay engaged while inhaling as exhaling equally

this is a situp not a deadlift, you dont need to "brace" just to flex your outer abs
why do nerds repeat SS bullshit everywhere?

anything else I should be aware of when it comes to calisthenics in general? are situps / pushups (standard wide and diamond) / squats enough?

should use leg raises instead of situps, easier on the back, and hanging leg raises strengthen your forearms

...also incorporate pullups, or at least horizontal rows

I incorporate some leg raises as well, and I'm too fat / weak for pullups right now. I'll definitely add them in once that changes.

*ALWAYS* exhale when the muscles contract.
All there is to exercise. All those powerlifting idiots blacking out? Forgot to fricking breathe.

why exhale on the contraction vs the release?

        so you dont pass out

But why will I pass out if I exhale on the release and inhale on the contraction?

            run around the block
breathe once you get to your destination rather than breathing along the way
let me know how that works out

You seem confused. I'm not asking why you need to breathe; I'm asking why you need to inhale at one point and exhale at another, instead of vice versa.

as an analogy, this is like you saying "inhale when you lift your left foot, and exhale when you lift your right foot" while offering no explanation as to why you shouldn't do the opposite and inhale when you life your right foot and exhale when you life your left foot.

When you sit up= exhale. When you go down= inhale. Make sure you're actually using your core, and not using your back to cheat.

Why is it better to exhale sitting up than going down?

Try bracing your abs. That air wants to come out. When you brace your core sitting up, the air wants to come out, so breathe it out.
