Where does punching rank in terms of cardio? Boxers are always running so I assume it's worse than running?

Bit higher than wii tennis, lower than running or cycling. Its not good cardio, better to train technique on the bag, cardio with cycling or running, and endurance and strength using weights.

Running is the barbell lifting of cardio.

Most normal well supported way to build cardio, just as barbell lifts are the most normal well supported way to build strength.
People who either want to have fun doing something unique, or fell for memes about the normal exercises being dangerous will train with other stuff.

Running is king because of muscles involved.

no it's not, only lower body is. Assbike is all muscles involved ans is the actual king of cardio

It ranks very, very high. It can be very high intensity, nothing gets me drenched in sweat as working the heavy bag does.

Running is different, and it's used to build up your cardio for the real thing. Boxing is more similar in intensity to rope skipping.

Running is king because of muscles involved. The more "full body" an exercise is, or the more strain it puts on the larger muscles, the better cardio is. Punching is among the lowest forms of cardio. You do harder forms of cardio per minute (running) to get even more out of lower forms of cardio per minute

this entire post is insanely wrong, boxing is full body and more intense than running, especially on a bag which provides resistance, boxers run and sprint just to keep up a base of cardio, and condition the calves, hitting a bag is so much more difficult they aren't in the same category of exercise (HIIT vs LISS) unless you'd sprint instead of jog/run.
boxers also used to shadowbox during runs in the past

More difficult doesn't mean better in terms of cardiovascular gains. I'd argue it's the exact opposite. You said yourself, boxers run to maintain base cardio. Why not just work the bag to maintain base cardio? Because 1 hour of working through bag will NEVER equal 1 hour of running when intensity is equated.

It's good cardio, but the point of failure is muscular fatigue in upper body.

Not boxing but here's an hour muay thai. Running is more about building leg and mental endurance than cardio in terms of training for combat sports.

I am a competitive boxer. Boxing is a swiss army knife sport that requires more than a handful of athletic disciplines and types of cardio. That is if you actually want to fight, for general cardio just heavy bag or speed bag or shadowboxing or whatever you happen to like the most is fine. Of everything shadowboxing is the most important. It will put your fluidity together the best, let you move around the most, and help you learn to manage your gas tank the best because it is the most freely flowing. When shadowboxing, doing it with gloves on, gloves off, and with weights all have different nuances and should be swapped in and out as part of a varied approach. Then probably heavy bag, as this will let you apply power and crack off much more than shadowboxing. These are the two punching exercises you will use to develop your cardio. Then you have specialty bags like speed, reflex, and double end bags which build reflexes technique accuracy and other soft skills. As part of a rounded program you need other cardio, and any mix of running (LISS hogs and sprints alike), jump rope, or drills like burpeees or calisthenics circuits for time, etc.
Tldr: running and hitting stuff are both good do both

Absolutely any activity that can keep your heartrate elevated is a good cardio. Yes, jerking off is a good cardio.
