Happy New Year IST. May your goals be achieved. And to those reluctant to start lifting

>you can escape skinnyfat mode in less than six months
>it takes less than a year for people to notice you lift
>programming as a beginner is piss easy, everything works
>diet is just as easy, just eat some protein and avoid fast food, candy and soda

>mires become so common they don't even register anymore
>people notice you lift even under winter clothes
>1/2/3/4 makes you stronger than mostly anyone you'll come across in your daily life
>once you see results you won't even think about skipping the gym
>consistency is the key to a good physique, even if you drag yourself to the gym you'll appreciate every single workout in retrospect
>a good physiqye has a halo effect on anything you do

Blessed thread, love Kenshiro kings like you wouldn't believe
    My new years resolutions:
    >draw every day
    >get better at my job (im a code monkey, fresh out of school)
    >read every day
    >pick up meditation and stick with it
    >start skipping (jump rope)
    >get lean and pack on some more muscle
    >stick to my workout routine
    >less social media (IST included), less time in front of computer
    >be more social and outgoing, up my social skills
    >finally get my driver's license
    >get my diet in order
    >get gf
I KNOW this is the year. I finally managed to escape my depression after 8 fricking years where I had no education, no job and no purpose in life
I'm taking the /calisthenics + jump rope/ pill. I've spent christmas planning for the next year, everything from diet to routine, and what I should read and spend less time on
I am driven. No MORE will I just sit idly and let time pass me by. Living in the now, one day at a time, never losing focus on the goals I want to achieve
My will is so potent its even manifesting on to those around me

I got mine at 25 3 years ago and proceeded to get a DUI 3 months later. After struggling with that for 2 years, getting fat then IST again, buying my ex-gf's brother's car that needed work, waiting almost 6 months to fix an oil pan gasket because the cousin who helped me travels so much, now I am back on the road with a better knowledge of cars than most, a good physique, no desire to ever drink and drive again, and a new leather jacket. Things are looking up.

Bad track record - poor discipline, defeatism, etc
Have started off doing things in the past but given up after a short period.
I am determined to change this this year but the fear of failure's real and quite demoralizing.

          Anonymous

Just start with things that are small, easy to do-- impossible to fear. Like ten push-ups, if you're REALLY just starting.

Then work up, etc.. Discipline is a muscle.
And, if you fail a day, hell, a week, it doesn't mean the death of your ideals. Your defeatism is a characteristic of you, but not one you can't overcome, surely.

      >you can escape skinnyfat mode in less than six months
What is the proper method? Leanbulk and cut, recomp, or lean bulk straight through?

I went on a very slow cut for around 5 months, until my abs were properly visible. Then just as slowly bulked on clean foods, milk, cheese, eggs and (unironically) brioche bread.

        Anonymous

How slow of a cut and bulk? Like 10% deficit?

          Anonymous

No idea lad, I've never counted calories in my life. Just eyeball it and cut unnecessary calories out, less bread, less olive oil, less butter, chicken breast instead of beef, that kind of thing.

            Anonymous

How much weight did you lose in that 5 month time?

              Anonymous

Went from 73kg to 65kg, so around 7kg. You can't rely too much on the scale because I lost fat on the one hand but gained muscle on the other, it's more of a matter of body composition than anything.

                Anonymous

I see. While I'd like to go a more intuitive route, I have problems with binge eating especially around my workouts. I just want to make sure I'm making proper progress aside from making the lifts go up. For reference, 17% bf and beginner-level lifts for my current body weight.

                Anonymous

Yeah, two of the problems with being skinnyfat is that
                >you have to learn to control your portions
                >everything you eat must serve a purpose
When you're skinnyfat you're probably used to snacking on very calorie dense foods that are also not the best for muscle building. Now that I escaped skinnyfat mode I can snack on random shit and fast food no problem, but at first you have to be rather strict with your portions and diet

                Anonymous

Meanwhile if you actually counted calories you could've lost 3 times that in 5 months (if you wanted to).

                Anonymous

I think the method suggested is to allow more sustainable muscle growth. Cutting as a skinnyfat can be discouraging because of the pathetic lifts and potentially slower progression. At least that was part of my justifications when the binging urges came up.

                Anonymous

I don't doubt it, but I wouldn't change a thing either. That rate of progression was enough for me to adapt without being overwhelming. I had enough time to figure out what works for my genes (when it comes to diet) and needs without losing myself to analysis paralysis. Which is what I say to most beginners and skinnyfats, just do it and don't waste your time with optimisation.

      Anonymous

Depends on your starting point, routine and genes, in that order.

      Anonymous

I tried lowering the weight lifted and instead focused more on form and time under tension, especially for the eccentric part of the lift and I've noticed a difference in how I feel the target muscle being hit. Feeling pretty optimistic about 2023, I'm going to focus a bit more on athleticism and health instead of lifting heavy, so initially I'll try to do three weightlifting sessions a week and cardio at least once a week, on top of eating better - less white bread overall and more vegetables for lunch/dinner.

Depends on where you start and how big you are, using 1/2/3/4 as a general strength metric is pretty bad IMO because you could be 5'8 weighing 160lbs and you're supposed to pull the same numbers as someone who's 6', 220lbs and bulking. Doing 0.75/1/1.25/1.5 bodyweight compounds for reps means you're in very good shape compared to the general population.

Nah, if you tried it and it didn't click then you found out something useful, its not coping if you actually go and try different things.
      >Idk how achievable all this is
Very achievable, if you like math then you will make a career or similar out of it and the rest will follow one way or another. Doing what you enjoy is always a good cornerstone to the rest of the things you want in life.

      >and most of all thinking, sir, so people can find out what they are good at, because someone doing what they really like is always an asset to any country, and too often people never find out until it is too late

Well I’m working, I was in college but my new jobs better. I’ve joined local clubs and stuff but still struggle to even meet new people honestly. Dating apps have done nothing for me. I’m honestly not even ugly, around average but short (5’7). I am trying to be more present at social events but I’m just quiet and don’t have much to say really

Honestly a little drinking can go a long way. I used to be kind of like you. I also used to think I was like a 4 to 6/10 on a good day, and I'm also short (but at least not fat) at 5'4". Just so you know where I'm coming from. These days I find it pretty easy to talk to people and make friends and people have even called me charismatic, although frankly, I don't believe them deep down. But at least I believe them at a surface level.

I know it can be hard to talk, sometimes you just have nothing to say, but alcohol as a social lubricant helps. Although I guess you might not be of drinking age, anyway.

Why don't you have much to say? And where do you work? A job that forces you to talk might help. Being a waiter is one that I'm familiar with. I assume some sales job would be similar.

I do drink but rarely, I’m from uk so it’s legal. I work in a retail position right now so I am dealing with customers and still not much has changed. I’ve noticed I’m not really anxious anymore, I just don’t have anything to say. I can ask people basic questions when meeting them but anything beyond that is alien to me, I just don’t know what to say to people.

I used to do retail at age 19. Sure you talk to people but it was nothing compared to being a waiter. That was when I was 20, I think. And when I got that job I also decided to stop saying no to people so I ended up doing stuff with a lot of my coworkers.

Is it just that you don't know WHAT to say or do you actually have nothing to say? Because the first can be fixed with just a lot of practice and your brain will figure it out.
