Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per lb of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.

    Two questions!
    1. I'm 190 and 5'11"(?--height gains possible because I got dick gains) right now and curious when my abs will begin showing. My goal is a six pack.
    2. Why is my nose hurting and why does my stomach hurt lately?

Depend how muscular you are. When I was ~150 5'11" I had visible ribs but no abs because I wasn't muscular.

I have slightly visible ribs and no abs myself. I'm hoping the uppermost ones begin showing as my belly recedes behind my ribcage.

At around 15% bodyfat. I'd say you're a fair bit off yet

This isn't accurate it depends on fat distribution. I'm above 15% and can seey abs and an extreme example would be like Eddie Hall who is at least 20 and still has visible abs

Ha, I'm in the same boat. I'm a 24.3 BMI now. I was obese last Christmas at 30.7
My weight loss slowed right down as I approached normal weight. I thought the love handles would take forever to go, they are slow, but there's not much left to them.
The only fat left is a paunch on my abdomen and I think my face could lose a little bit more.
I'm going to aim to go to a BMI of 23, maybe even 22, I'll judge it by appearance.
I'm also making good gains with the exercises. I'm very happy so far.
God willing I will be reversing my diet before this Christmas coming and will have the nutrition to make some nice muscle building gains in the gym

Nonsense. I lost most of my weight on a high carb nearly no fat diet. I'm 80lbs lighter than I was at my heaviest. Once you plateau, then simply cut your carb portions down. No need to ever stop all carb consumption.

NTA but if you have a Walmart near you and want to fully commit to home delivery groceries, you should check out their yearly membership since it’s free delivery for groceries that cost more than 35usd.
Since I work from home and don’t have a car I just have everything delivered to me, it saves on gas and time going there

I'm hungry all the time. I hate myself. I have been eating 200+ grams of protein and I'm still waking up too hungry to sleep. I eat about 3 lbs. of green vegetables per day. I've done water fasts before. I've tried keto (too weak to work out or cardio, missed eating fruit, regained the weight due to hunger), I've tried PSMF (regained all the weight due to hunger), I've tried low fat (regained all the weight due to hunger).

Blah, this sucks. I'm eating 3,000 calories per day and I can't stop. Chicken breast, broccoli, spinach, low fat cottage cheese, eggs, beans. Doesn't fricking matter and I get so hungry that I overeat on fruit, nuts, and seeds.

      Anonymous

      >wake up and can't sleep because of hunger
I'm presuming this is when you take in the extra calories?
Can you tolerate hunger early in the morning. Maybe try something like intermittent fasting or OMAD were you eat the bulk of your alloted calories in a evening meal.
Go hungry during the day, but deal with it, have a satiating meal in the evening so you're not as hungry going to sleep

      Anonymous

      >I overeat on fruit, nuts, and seeds
Get rid of them (for now)
Don't have food in the home that you can easily pick up and eat
      Have food that needs preparation.
This will slow down the the impulsive behaviour

That's because 90% of your daily diet should be a starchy carb like potato. You'll keep failing until you realize this. Haven't met a keto person that could stick to their insane diet.

Any redpills on burning fat cells completely? I've heard mention that it can be done, possibly through fasting, but I don't remember exactly. Conventional wisdom says that once fat cells are made, they never go away, only shrink in size.

Help me out bros. My cursed insomnia is killing my weight loss gainz. I remain strong and keep my cals under my goal, but I get hungry and I'm bloated because I can't sleep.

A deficit spikes cortisol which causes sleep disruption. Happens to everyone. I take Magnesium and Glycine about an hour before bed and that usually makes me sleep fine. Valerian root tea is also good apparently. If it gets really bad you can try Melatonin but I've heard that relying on that can get bad.

Stop making excuses. I'm so exhausted from a decade of sleep disorder that I've been randomly passing out sitting up doing shit and I still continue to lose weight. I'm down nearly 85lbs from my heaviest. Nothing I've tried has cured my sleep bullshit. I recommend you only eat at meal times and deal with the hunger by accepting it. The worst night hungry is the first one. Accept that you won't sleep well some nights because hunger will bother you. If you truly have a sleep disorder, you will eventually be exhausted enough to pass out no matter how hungry you are. Maybe not that night, but the next. I used to have zero impulse control like you. Never allow yourself to eat between meals. You want a snack? Then eat it for lunch tomorrow. Hungry? Good. Fricking great. That should be your goal every single day you want to lose weight.

I managed to do my first few pull-ups.
I'm doing 15 pushups in a single rep now.
It's not a quick improvement even though I'm doing it every day, because I do them whenever with varying rest periods. So I take what I can get, I'm slowly coming to terms with exercising.
I lost a bit of weight despite traveling and eating out a few days a week because of social activities. I mostly stayed within my TDEE.
I lost around 3kg in the last 2 months (took me a bit to nail the diet) and I didn't see any change in my body fat % even though I put on a bit of muscle.
I'm at 26.2% body fat right now. My body looks awful, I'm in the obese fat % range and I'm close to my normal weight according to BMI. I have huge love handles.
I'm sticking to a clean diet for as long as I can now, no cheats or nothing now that I'm back home.
I'm still doing 2 protein shakes and 1x 160g-ish meal with mostly protein and green vegetables, for a roughly 1k to 800 cal cut a day.
I'm 5'5 and I'm at 157lb. I honestly want to cry. I have no idea how I'm going to get rid of this fat. I'm pretty sure I have to go way below my normal BMI to lose it. I was 123lb at some point in my life, I was hitting the gym back then and I still looked awful. I'm willing to go starving marvin mode and then bulk again if necessary.
I will keep working on the pull-ups, once I'm more comfortable with it, I will get a gym sub.
I will also switch one of the protein shakes for egg whites, to cut a bit more calories and carbs.
I'm currently consuming around 100 to 120g of protein daily. Around 30g of carbohydrates (whey, milk, vegetables, seasonings), some of this being fibers.
Yes, my diet wasn't always this clean.
I will keep reporting my journey here, you guys have good advice and it keeps my grounded to keep a rough diary here.
Is this fixable within 8 months/1 year? I'm kinda weak rn and I suffer from extreme social anxiety, which is why I'm avoiding the gym for now.

      Anonymous

Keep your deficit consistent and keep up the working out and in 8 months you'll look like a different person. 8 months ago I was 280lbs, today I'm 198lbs and only 20 away from my target.
If you can't lift in a gym then try callisthenics although lifting is best to make you look good. You'll probably still be kinda flabby at goal weight but another 12 months of bulking and you'll have some good musculature.
      You can make it brah

      Anonymous

      >I suffer from extreme social anxiety, which is why I'm avoiding the gym for now.
The first time I went to the gym I was visibly obese and completely clueless to what I was supposed to be doing.
Stripping off in the locker room I felt completely out of my depth thinking other guys were smirking at my condition (it was all in my head)
I paid for the year up front so I was determined to get my moneys worth.
Now I'm no longer the most out of condition person there.
Just make yourself go. The more you go the more you get used to it, the better your body will look.
There's an important reason that weight lifting is strongly recommended for those who are losing a substantial amount of weight

        Anonymous

        >There's an important reason that weight lifting is strongly recommended for those who are losing a substantial amount of weight
I know, keeping the lean mass is hard. I'm doing home exercises for that, it helps. I'm hitting my macros as well. I'm still weak enough that home exercises with a bar can make me sore. My deadline to hit the gym is when I can no longer get sore exercising with the bar, or within the next 2 months.
Did you hire a personal trainer?
I'm at that low point that even looking at people makes me feel miserable. Sometimes I go out without my glasses because I can't see them at all. I'm only grounded and stable because I work from home and I get groceries and everything else delivered at my door.

          >Did you hire a personal trainer?

Is it worth buying a nintendo switch just to get ring fit adventure?
I'm very sedentary, lost about 80 pounds, still 10-20 to go for my goal, and now my weight loss has become extremely slow.
Thinking of getting this as a good way to get active while still staying inside, so I don't have to challenge my social anxiety in a real gym.

I just finished my first month of my first job, so a switch+ringfit would be a bit less than half of my first paycheck...

Ring fit is pretty good, I like the boxing game on switch too which I do semi frequently. Of course it’s all about how much you choose to return to the games and then they become worth it.
There’s a good chance you’ll buy them, play them a few times and then never start them up again for another year

Don’t spend almost half your first paycheck on video games anon

Any exercise is better than no exercise. It's cool and all, but it's kind of more focused on volume/cardio/calories training. As a beginner it's good as a strengthening training, if you don't wanna hit the gym. As far as cardio goes, well it's comfortable because you are at home, but you are better off hitting a treadmill or swimming.
Anyway, in your case it's worth it, it's actually kinda fun too. I stopped doing it because I don't like jumping/skipping etc in my apartment, building structure is kinda flimsy.
Just don't expect a miracle out of that.
        Also this [...]

To be fair, I don't really have anything in particular I want or need to spend money on, so that's why I even started considering it in the first place, I felt like at least it would be money spent on me. Sadly there really is nothing else on the switch I want to play so it's a hard pill to swallow...

maybe it suits your temperament, i tried it but got bored pretty quick. then i got a bike and it's way more enjoyable to get the exercise done outside.

I do have a bike, before I staretd working I was able to get an hour of bike in every couple days or so, but in the last month I've had 0 time working almost every day...
I'll save the money and try to get back on the bike for now, and keep ring fit in the back of my mind I guess, it is quite a bit of money, I could even buy a better bike with it now that I think about it. THanks anons.

Your portions are too large. That's the only reason for a plateau. First check how much fat and carbs you're eating. Then ask yourself if you can reduce those. Fastest fifteen pounds I ever lost was by reducing portions when I thought I was doing everything right.

Honestly you would get more out of buying some decent dip bars and a simple routine. One day you do dips and bodyweight rows. The next just do bodyweight bulgarian split squats on your couch. Once you're doing that every day, add in a few other exercises, but if you get lazy go back to those first three exercises. Only shit you need to a way better than average body.

i like something small before and then a little bit of food every hour or so. eating heavy messes with my stomach. maybe bring a small snack to try in case it happens again, banana is good for this

          >Should I get something with electrolytes to drink tomorrow?
i'd suggest it, especially in heat. any time i ride more than an hour in normal weather i always make sure to have those effervescent electrolyte tablets.

the symptom is a little vague but these are the two things i'd try first.

Going to end the day at 1390 kcals, 116 protein, 54 carbs, 76 fat. It's kinda remarkable how little a diet has to feel like one. I had a cup of cottage cheese for breakfast, a chicken tender and half a big bag of pork skins for lunch, and will be having 5 very large meatballs and some cheese for dinner. If I ate any more for any of these meals I would legitimately feel sick.

what's the optimal body fat percentage for putting on lots of muscle?
is it just to do a "lean bulk" where you're eating a few hundred calories more than maintenance, each day?
i feel like ive been eating at around maintenance most days, some days a little higher, some a little lower.
and ive been slowly putting on body fat, as a result. but also been gaining muscle.
it feels like a really fine line I'm walking, and it feels like I am still putting on more fat than I'd like.
should i just do a small cutting phase to get back down a few percentage points of body fat, then continue as i am doing now?
i am 5'7" and around 150lbs fyi. and i lift 60-90 minutes a day, and do about 2 hours of LISS cardio a day.
These are my main lifts' numbers:
    >bench 5x3 155lbs
    >bench 3x10 130lbs
    >squat 5x3 120lbs (reset a few weeks ago for better form, ass to grass, hence abnormally low weight)
    >squat 3x10 100lbs (did 9x10 last week and pulled a muscle)
    >deadlift 5x3 185lbs
    >deadlift 3x10 170lbs
    >OHP 5x3 85lbs
    >OHP 3x10 70lbs
Again this is at 5'7" tall, 33 years old, male, 150lbs body weight. I think I am at 20% body fat now. I was down to 132lbs 14.5% over half a year ago. but absoolute dyel

I hate the apartment I am living in and I desire to change and it can affect my weightloss journey.

Option A I would be able to bicycle to work everyday, but I am further away from areas I like to spend my time in during my free time.

Option B, I would be unable to bike to work but I would be within easy walking distance of multiple gyms and it would be in an area that I really like hanging out in but it is also a shitty part of a shitty town.

People in my town are like that. Luckily there is a damn good bike path by American standards. To get to the closest grocery store I intersect one minor residential street, and to get downtown I think you intersect like 3 streets. My issue is I work construction so I can't anyways. The town I'm hoping to move to has a shit ton of cyclists that mostly ride on the road. There's also I think two roads that are 35mph or above, one of which is the very edge of the town.

Carbonation in general can upset the stomach and cause digestive issues. I had a stretch of really bad acid reflux about a year ago and I couldn't even drink shit like that.

The only thing I can think of that could be a downside is that the carbonation is slightly acidic. So, slightly bad for your teeth, etc.

Besides a DEXA scan is there any other simpler way to calculate my body fat %? I really want to know where I am and how far from 15% I am. I still have fat on my stomach area by most of the rest of me has melted awy

      Anonymous

Do the navy fat calculation in OP, but add 3-4% to it to account for the margin of error. But don't take the measurement so seriously, its just another number that can be used for tracking. Not even DEXA scans are 100% accurate (margin of error at like 1-2%). The biggest factors to consider are:
      >is the scale number trending down
      >is your waist number trending down
      >are your lifts getting better or at least holding up

        Anonymous

Yes to all three is the answer, but I think my issue is I'm just unsure how close I am to 15% and it'd be fun to know just how close am I

The thing is my body is just...fricking weird. Every resource I've read about fat loss talks about your body shrinking in size "evenly", yet for me it never seems to be the case. My arms, love handles, thighs, everything has reduced drastically, but my stomach (the front belly pouch) is just still huge despite everything else being so slim. I am aware this is the last spot your body drains fat from, so this is normal, but I just want to see how close I am getting to that BF% I want. I am seeing progress on all those fronts yet still feel my stomach refuses to leave

Clearly there is because some people drop 10lbs in 10 months while others drop 100lbs in 10 months. It doesn't need to be easy or "sustainable" it just needs to work

If its not sustainable then it didn't work stupid. If you'd rather be dead than fat and you end up getting fat again then whats the point

There's no such thing as a sustainable diet you fricking moron because in order to lose weight you have to eat at a calorie deficit. When you are at your goal weight your diet is completed and you eat to maintain your weight understand?

              Anonymous

Yes I do understand because I lost all the weight dip shit. If you aren't eating like you will eat at maintenance, just less, then it will not work. Do YOU understand? If you fast for 30 days and just go back to drinking beer and eating McDonald's then its not going to happen for you. If you eat nothing but chicken and broccoli for a year but then go back to chugging soda and eating ice cream and shit then its not going to happen for you. Statistics show that diets fail at an alarmingly high rate and the ones that don't are because the individual changed the way that they did things in their life to reflect that. Which means learning to make sustainable choices, understanding proper nutrition, and exercising. Do it or don't dude I dont give a shit if you stay obese and moronic but there are no short cuts so get that shit out of your head or just never make it.

I'm mentally and physically very healthy actually, which is much more than we can say for you. Keep searching for that short cut though dummy. Every day you waste looking for a short cut instead of lifting weights and eating reasonable portions of a well balanced diet is a day further from your goal. Stay obese and miserable talking about how you'd rather be dead than live with your choices

You are unironically mentally ill. A diet is like taking antibiotics. When the sickness (being fat ends) the diet terminates. Quick weight loss gimmicks are strictly for weigh-ins (fighters) that NEED to be a certain weight before a competition and they can quickly gain it back.

This is such a delusional take. You think like that because you were probably addicted to eating McDonald's so the idea of someone dropping junk food at the drop of a hat is just totally alien to you. The answer is to focus on eating the right things consistently a majority of the time. You dont diet, you restrict calories leaving your diet largely the same and just limiting amount. Your brain is denser than your undeniably massive gut

If you want a practical example of why you shouldn't aim to lose as fast as metabolically possible, losing quickly is immensely likely to give you massive loose skin and gallstones. It also makes you highly likely to regain but you've already coped about that enough ITT.

Unless you do a humongous pizza (I am talking like a 50cmx50cm rectangle) you WILL be under your daily calories. But apparently Amerilards add oil to their mass-produced corporate pizzas? No wonder you have a warped sense of the caloric density of pizza (a plain homemade or restaurant made Margherita is maybe 260kcal/100g).

One thing I don’t understand about point one is the calculation of fats/proteins/carbs into calories. Do their respective caloric equivalents get added to the base calories of something I consume? Or are they already added on? For instance if I eat something that’s 100 calories with 4 grams of carbs is that item really 116 calories?

Red meat and eggs are the best sources of vitamins and nutrients. A red meat only diet is nutritionally complete. Eggs have all the nutrition needed to grow into a living chick. Dairy is also super nutritious. Any cheese aged over 6 months is zero carb. Homemade kefir is better than yogurt.

Guys I haven’t lost weight in 2 weeks what do?
Basically around 3 months ago I realized that I became a fat pig: I was 106kg at 193cm - which is not THAT bad, since I also have some muscle. But still disgusting like pig.
I also had no exercise, so I made changes:
    1. 3 times a week exercise, it’s either gym or swimming. Yesterday I ran for 5km that also counts but I NEVER CHEAT.
    2. No more fast food.
    3. No Alkohol.
    4. Reduced calorie intake, but not counting calories just sane healthy food.

So far it has been going great, I am now 97,75kg. But for two weeks I have not advanced further. Do I have to change anything around? I fear I can not reasonably up the amount of exercise for now because I used to do none at all and sit on my fat all all day doing IT work. I am afraid of falling back into the old ways, and 3 hours a week is making me feel infinitely better so highest priority is to keep that what I have gained.
I thought about adding some push-ups every morning, but not sure if that would be a good idea.
I have not counted the calories but for example let me tell you what I ate yesterday:
I ate cereals for breakfast and a coffee without sugar.
I skipped lunch, and I ate a banana before running for 5km.
Then I got myself some dumplings with grilled onions, and one natural Joghurt with a spoon of strawberry jam.
I think that shouldn’t be too bad, without counting it. And that is basically the amount I normally eat.
    I am 26 years old

Okay I will go with that thanks.
        >cereals
        Are they actually bad?
Like the stuff I am eating is stuff like
        Bergsteiger Müsli
I am German, and I think you can not easily translate it into English, or perhaps I just do not know. Basically in German there is a distinction between Müsli and Kornflakes which are both translated as cereals, the classical cereals with a lot of sugar are the later, while what I am eating has a lot of whole oats and nuts and some sugar sweetness from fruits. It has a pretty good nutreinscore.
Not that I am making excuses, just making sure I am being clear about what exactly I am eating.
If that is also a problem, what would you suggest instead? An alternative would be to do like bread and cheese. Would that be better? I switched to cereals because I thought that was better

        >strawberry jam
        Stop eating refined sugars

Yes I look if I generally have too much or okay food.
Normally I eat lots of meat, my favorite foods are steak and sushi. And I know that those are good ones that you do not go wrong with as long as you do not stuff yourself with it.
I am usually using olive oil. But again I am not deep frying them just a tiny bit of oil to get onions and meat a bit fried.
        >strawberry jam
It was just one spoon, and it doesn’t even have that much sugar because I got it from my mum who always is very sparing with it. But yes normally I avoid sugar everywhere, like no Softdrinks and no sugar in coffee and stuff. Generally I only eat processed foods when I eat out, but yes you are right that this was a mistake.
Generally however I thought that it’s the amount that is most important basically you need high protein, not too little vitamins and most importantly low amount and then it will work or am I wrong about that?
I used to do zero carb diet once and it wasn’t really good for my health, as I have some issues with the gallbladder

Check some of the things for how much calories they have, every little thing must have that nowadays, so it's easy.
Plenty of stuff that plays on "healthy" has very high calorie count.
Or oils in general - a tablespoon (not a lot) ranges from 80 to 120 kcal depending on the type.

Personally I've been skipping breakfast and having a "brunch" instead with fish or eggs and salad leaves.
            >issues with the gallbladder
Dieting can effect the formation of gallstones. Small amounts of peanuts or cashew nuts can be protective. Those that had their gallbladder removed need to follow specific dietary requirements

            >Fish for breakfast
That’s basically the Asian way. I thought about going with Vietnamese Pho for breakfast, that’s the best thing ever.
However I need to change my life around step by step and I know for a fact that the logistics of that would collapse my supply chain.
However I will reevaluate the nutreins of the muesli I am eating that’s a good point. Using portridge as a baseline is a good idea. I used to eat portridge only for breakfast and that got too stale after some time, but perhaps I need to change it around
            >gallbladder
Yea, I ended up having mine removed because of gallstones that is also why I am not allowed to skip breakfast

Both. Eat fruit in moderation and stop "snacking". Have fruit with either your breakfast or as "dessert"
      >potatoes and rice are good because you fill up on them
      >potatoes and rice are bad because they stimulate you to eat more
The first. Potatoes and rice are satieting. Eat them with something high in protein like chicken, beef or eggs. Eat within your calorie target and ignore "stimulation to eat more". People are obese because they react to every stimulus to eat more. The more structured your mealtimes are the less stimulus to eat more you will get

I use a lot of different seasoning, but even then, it got boring after a month.
Using stuff like smoked paprika, masala, chili, oregano, marjoram and some others along with salt and pepper ofc.
For example, today, I had turkey strips with mixed vegetables (carrot, parsnip, lettuce, onions) seasoned with dried garlic (and salt and pepper ofc).
Or sometimes, I make a soup.
Really miss a boiled potato, but I don't want to mess up since I lasted a month already.

Potatoes are high on the satiety index. Eat them boiled preferably still in their skins. They are a good staple food and there should be no problem eating them everyday as long as they are part of a healthy diet.
Your main meal of the day should also include a good source of protein.

I don't eat anything with sugar other than stuff that naturally has it, like fruits, vegetables or the milk that I pour into my coffee after I found out I really hate black one.
For cooking, I prefer to bake or boil things. Boil eggs and soups, bake meat. When preparing veggies on a pan, I only use water. When it's with meat, I use a tablespoon of olive oil and then cover the pan so the water from veggies don't evaporate away but stays for the moisture instead to prevent the meat from burning.
The most processed thing I eat is a chicken or turkey steamed ham that I buy in stores and eat for breakfast, because I don't have the time to make anything else in the morning.
I'm giving it till Christmas, if I see it works, I'll go on. If not, I'll eat pastry and shit again, because I really really miss it.

              >pastries
By all means have a pastry. Have a bowl of ice-cream while your at it. But have them once a week or only on the weekend.
You don't need to keep the "all or nothing" approach, especially if you're struggling maintaining your diet. Diet breaks can help with sustainability. I think being highly restricted in your diet is very useful in the beginning and is needed to form discipline and consistency, but to forever ban yourself from ever eating certain things might not be sustainable over the long term.
If you can march on without pastries then fine, more power to you, if you're struggling then have a break at the weekend (within maintenance calories or a small surplus).

When you're not hungry your body is burning fat. When you're hungry it means your insulin is high (you ate carbs) which blocks fat burning.

The key to sustainable weight loss is never being hungry.

How drastic the intervention needs to be depends on the individual.

Once you understand the source of the problem (i.e. hormonal response to food) you can take many approaches.

                1. Reducing carbs
                2. Replacing refined with unrefined carbs
                3. Exercise after eating
                4. Eating less frequently

Knowledge is power. I'd just cut all carbs because why pussyfoot around? But do what suits you.

you said that 20 minutes ago, it's binary between eating carbs or quitting carbs
now it's a sliding scale? I CAN succeed on rice?

You're probably not going to succeed at all. The more rice you eat the less likely you will succeed.

Think about moving from point A to point B. You should travel towards your destination, right? Eating rice is like moving away from your destination.

Generally, to actually burn fat you need to have a ratio of fats to carbs of at least 2:1, or a number of carbs so little that it has a similar effect. In the latter case, under 20 works.

                Anonymous

That makes literally no sense. Actual ketosis doesn't start until <5% calories from carbs, ~70% from fat. So you aren't restricting carbs enough to be keto, and if you aren't restricting calories enough to be at a deficit. You can still burn fat with high ish carbs so long as you aren't in rabbit starvation, are eating enough protein to not atrophy, and are constricting your calories.

2 protein shakes (500ml of milk in total) + 160g of chicken with bean pods and spinach.
Unfortunately I had to go to the office today and we had a few finger foods ordered for an event. I hate going to the office.
I'm not too sure if I ate above my TDEE today, but even if I did it wasn't by much.
I started feeling a fairly sharp pain in my elbows when doing pull-ups. I will quit it for a bit.
I got to my lowest weight this year. Hope today didn't frick up too much my diet.
Tomorrow I'm sticking to the 2 shakes + 160g of food.
