Why aren't there bars to protect you from dropped weights on a bench press?

I don't really lift weights.

How come there aren't metal bars that run alongside a benchpress at a 90 degree angle to the weights?
In that case, if you drop the weights, it'll just hit the metal and not yourself.

This seems like the most basic safety precaution, but I have literally never seen it before. I feel like I'm missing something.

There are except in america because Americans are tarded

There are, on proper platforms. You can also bench inside a half or full rack, which usually has safety bars.
For some unknown reason, most commercial gyms opt to buy shitty platforms with no configurability or safety bars and slidey and too narrow benches, despite them not being much more cheaper than a competition platform, and more expensive than a half rack.

      uh okay so there are

Still, it just seems like the most basic level of protection from serious bodily injury and apparently.
It seems like it should be illegal to not have this.

I can't imagine metal bars inconveniencing me that much that I'd be willing to drop 300 pounds onto my ribcage accidentally.

        Yes it's moronic.
Squat racks will usually have safeties in a commercial gym, but you can learn how to dump a squat safely.
With bench you're fricked above a certain weight without a spotter or safeties.
Why are gyms like this? No explanation.

I worry about this sometimes when im in the gym late at night by myself. Usually just have to stop one rep short of failure. Sucks but better than the morning crew finding me blue under a bar.

the last thing we need is more laws, just use common sense and don't try to bench more than you can handle

you don’t get the full rom advantage to push it down to touch your chest

You do, just use a slight arch.
      >if you drop tension and relax, bar rests on safeties

the safeties don't have to be above your chest to save your life, just above your neck

        This
I have found that power racks generally don’t have safeties that can be set at the necessary height for benching safely and correctly. Why don’t we just come up with a design that doesn’t limit ROM, but still keeps you from guillotining yourself?

If you can drop the bar you can drop a dumbbell on yourself.

If you drop a dumbbell it won't crush your neck and it will be half of the total weight you're benching instead of the full weight.

I had an idea for a basic spotting bench a while ago that would lift the bar upward but I don’t think anyone wants to spend that kind of money. There are safety benches already and nobody wants to even spend that much money. Plus I imagine there’s the people who will find a way to frick themselves up and sue you because your bench didn’t save them.

If you're in the market for a rack, look for one with Westside spacing

Holy shit, what a good idea, you should patent it. Maybe call them safety bars or "safeties" for short.

My gym only has a bunch of full racks for bench pressing. Some people set up the safety bars but most don't. I don't. I'm not going to drop the bar and I know how to fail safely

Not the brightest people are involved in the "paying money to lift heavy weights up and down for an hour in a room" segment of society.
