Is that really the best you anon? Skin is technically the largest organ of your body. So it's important to take care of it. Not saying to slather lotion and sunscreen every moment, but making sure you don't feel like a stretched piece of leather later on is not a "weakling" type mentality.

I tan easily and go outside a lot, so it builds up gradually. Rarely, when there's a short-sleeve warm day very early in spring, I might get enough sun to feel a little burn warmth overnight.

everyone, even the pastiest white person, has melanocytes, cells that produce melanin, which protect from damaging UV radiation absorption
melanocytes work more the more sunlight you are exposed to
outside exposure to direct sunlight from work/leisure activity doesn't regularly happen anymore
people expose themselves to massive doses of UV radiation without regularly functioning melanocytes, and melanin reserves, this causes skin cancer
it has nothing to do with sunscreen, it's a change in lifestyle over generations
also the degradation of the entire human genepool thanks to the scientific revolution keeping people alive who would die young otherwise, Teddy K. was right, but that's another story

It wont hurt your skin if you use mineral based sunscreen. Look for zinc-oxide.

I have red hair and extremely sensitive skin. I can tell if I use chemical based sunscreens (oxybenzone + a bunch of others) because I will start to get itchy. This doesnt happen when I use mineral.

      >everyone, even the pastiest white person, has melanocytes,
The gene expression for this in me is so low that I might as well not have it. I don't tan, I just get freckles or sunburn. I really have to use sunscreen.

Although, I have looked into other methods, and I'd honestly be willing to do some DIY gene therapy on myself to be able to tan.

I haven't put any research into myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a quasi health marketing ploy from the start. Does it really help at all?

I do if I’m in the desert or in the mountains or at the beach. Nowhere else though.
One time didn’t wear sunscreen while skiing on spring break at Crested Butte in high school. There’s almost no tree cover there, it was 60 degrees and the sun was shining so I was skiing in just a t-shirt. Got so sunburned I started peeling like a snake. Learned my lesson.
