An important distinction has to be made, the majority of those 400lbs need to be contractile tissue, not lard. Kabib could still easily take down someone built like Boogie (or just keep speedwalking away until boog's heart gives out), but against someone built like Brian Shaw ... good luck.

Heel hooks and chokes are pretty good against unskilled big guys since you can't train your knee ligaments or your carotid arteries, but if you give them a bit of defensive training it gets tough.

You don't need much muscle to be the best fighter. It's mostly skill, cardio, and strength endurance when weight classes are taken into account. If there were no weight classes then most of the top guys would probably be around the mid to high 200s for weight with a few freak outliers

      Anonymous

because they're not body builders? Any other athlete that's also not body builders looks "slightly above average"

BJJ autists would tell you that the first UFCs settled everything and that 5'8 130 lbs royce gracie would destroy anyone but the early UFCs were semi-rigged in the sense that they prevented serious experienced grapplers from competing until Gracie stepped out and instead they fought mostly karate morons traning out of their garage.

But then Japan in the 2000s when UFC was eating shit would have open weight tournament and sure enough the normal heavyweights dominated it. They would also have freakshow fights that featured smaller dudes against giant tubs of shit and almost every single time the smaller one won.

Even in Sumo which has no weight categories the top division and top ranks rarely goes past 350 lbs.

Professional “fighters” always make me laugh like yeah you may constantly train but your 5’8 145 pounds I’ve never thrown a punch in my life but I’d still frick your up just because I’m 6’3 224 pounds

If Kazushi Sakuraba was at UFC 1, everyone would be learning catch wrestling instead of BJJ. But it wouldn't have become as popular as BJJ is now days because its a rough ass sport.
BJJ is a fine grappling art but you gotta admit there's a ton of soitwinks filling those gyms.

People are only learning jiu jitsu these days because it's part of the game, there hasn't been a true BJJ champion in frickin years, a decade probably it all started to go downhill for BJJ bros when Gracie left the UFC and they let grapplers in.

these days everyone basically fights as ground and pound or simply staying on top and winning by points.

He's right though. All the guys train BJJ just so they can defend subs and BJJ shit but they don't actually win fights using BJJ. They win them either by wrestling or boxing. Charles is a rare example of someone winning mostly with BJJ (although his striking is tremendous as well). This is why I'm so hyped for Makhachev vs Oliveira because we're finally going to see if real deal elite BJJ can defeat the sambo wrestlers from Dagestan

                >real deal elite BJJ can defeat the sambo wrestlers
Why is this the narrative? It's literally just about individuals, not styles at this point. The sambo guys use bjj/judo techniques all the time, the bjj guys use wrestling all the time.

Bjj is still super relevant considering every single fighter trains it extensively, it's just being absorbed into "mma grappling" in general. MMA is really its own style at this point. The sport has evolved so much in the past ten years that specialists don't exist anymore. We saw Ngannou wrestlefrick his way to a decision this year. And land a scissor sweep lol.

that's why pro fighters generally want to learn takedown defense. What's wrong with tripping someone? Or with kicking them when they're down? A fight's a fight, no?

MMA used to sell itself as "no rules" and the closest thing to actual real life fighting and this was maybe true for some time like the first few UFCs but even back then there was basic rules like no biting or eye gouging. groin was fair shot for some time.

but as the UFC had to turn into a sport to work its way into the legal system and the country properly, in Japan it remained a spectacle for quite some time and head stomps were allowed so were knees to a downed opponent the organization PRIDE had open weight tournaments.

There's still some difference between MMA rules in north america/europe and in Asia where they still allow stomps (but no longer to the head) and knees to a downed opponent as well as the forbidden elbow

The main reason for the differences in rules is that MMA and fighting shit is most likely as far as promotions go linked to the Yakuza, at least Pride was 100% yakuza backed.

This. I don't think normalgays realize how steep the mountain is when it comes to the levels in a combat sports situation, how easily dominated someone can be just from a few ranking differences.
An untrained man stands a 1% chance against an real ameteur mma fighter. He stands a 1% chance against a low level pro fighter. He stands a 1% chance against a top 100 ranked fighter. He stands a 1% chance against a ranked 15 fighter. Then he stands a 1% chance against a real top of the food chain champion.

Yes. There's a reason why it's a sport where athletes go long into their late 30s and even 40s, long after their athletic peak of the late 20's; after losing their explosiveness, speed, and athleticism, the skill acquisition can trump all of it, despite possible brain damage.

you get smarter the older you get and you got more time to memorize things the longer you play, plus you get more field experience. I've been playing chess from a young age and mostly online and I've been improving with age since I can think more calmly under pressure more.

Same statistics go for FPS games vs Strategy games in e-sports, more older people are usually better in strategy than shooters.

He was a quick little shit but it didn't matter. I could hit him with body shots and even when he blocked or absorbed the punches they still took a toll. I just chopped wood and the punches he threw had little to no impact. I would not be the slightest bit scared to fight him or any lightweight or featherweight for real. Mass matters.

You can have every physical advantage possible over a person, if you're not trained you'll really not know what to do with them even if you get your hands on them.

This is why so many real life fights end up with two people rolling on the ground exhausted even if one of them is much larger. Unless someone is dumb enough to let their heads unprotected within your range you'll need some technique to know how to do damage and some conditioning to be able to sustain pressure.

Too much muscle is counter productive to fighting as fighters with shredded physiques gas out too fast

So it is intentional for endurance purposes

There are some fighters who have reallly shredded physiques with low body fat, but it comes at the cost of gassing out of the fight goes for a long time

So those fighters rely on explosive KOs and or otherwise ending the fight earlier in the first round or two

Often with the really competitive UFC most fighters will cut weight well below their 'walking around' weight to stay competitive in that weight class. If you go into the 185 division as some jacked up 5'7 dude you're gonna get your ass kicked by some lean 6'4 guy.

You need endurance but not ultimate endurance. Enough to go for 25 minutes. You need muscle but not ultimate muscle. You need to stay in weight range. You need strength and conditioning but not ultimate strength and conditioning. You still need to learn how to fight.

If you compare them to cbum who's a professional for muscle hypertrophy, of course they won't stack up. If you compare them to marathon runners and sprinters, they won't look the same either. It's why it's mixed martial arts and not mixed martial science.

I will concede that the talent pool is more shallow because the angry tomato will pay only 5 figures for a fight unless you're the face of the card. Dominick Reyes, for example, went into the UFC after he got mogged out of football. If MMA had the same prestige as the NFL or NBA you would see a bunch of genetic freaks fighting it out instead of people who are very funny, charming, and idiosyncratic.

I agree with you on most of that. Fighting is a whole different beast to NFL or NBA tho. Just because someone has the physical gifts to be a top level fighter, does not mean they are going to have the mental edge to get in a cage 2-3 times a year and put their body/reputation on the line against another man. As someone who's trained in legit gyms, I can tell you that being a fighter is just about the most difficult job around. The training is grueling. They are constantly injured but have to fight anyway to pay bills. One loss can set you back 3 steps in your career. Doesn't matter if you were sick or just having a bad night. You have to live with that loss for 3-6 months until you can fight again and redeem yourself.

Guys only fight because they have no alternative. The people who are crazy enough to fight in a cage for a living tend to be a bit different which is why some have those qualities you mentioned.

tl:dr. We'll never see the best athletes in the UFC, no matter how high the pay is.

There's a few fighters who look pretty built like GSP, Paulo Costa, Yoel Romero are the obvious ones.
Mariusz Pudzianowski went into MMA after WSM.
But for the most part it's just the fact that they aren't bodybuilders.

This fool won his last 5 fights in a row by KO or TKO. His most recent fight was this year. His record isn't the most impressive at 17-7 but he seems to be enjoying the sport.

He'd probably beat both in MMA just due to experience at this point.
Would be a fun watch either way.

Both would get destroyed by literally any ufc heavyweight, never mind fighters that specialise in making you carry their weight and gassing you out

kek even with their prime WSM physiques Eddie/Hafthor vs Ngannou or Gane would be a massacre. Would actually pay to watch the card for once lol

people who think they'd win a fight *just* because they're tall, are delusional
height only helps if you know how to use it
although size is always beneficial as it allows you to generate more force in grappling exchanges

    >why do cage fighters have slightly above average bodies?
Khabib has a very strong core and back, why he looks like a barrel optimized for wrestling and grappling. Also, after a certain muscle mass, skill and cardio is more important.

My ideal physique. Unfortunately unattainable for mere mortals even with roids. This is the kinda physique you only get from a lifetime of wrestling and being a physical specimen

      He's 161 cm, which is like 5'2 not 5'7.
yea, you'll probably lose to someone who is literally triple your size. Any regular guy within a regular distribution of your size, you would literally kill. For example a 5'7 manlet would absolutely decapitate a 6'3 230lb gymbro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea0IzY_3YqE.

But yes, if you weigh 500lbs and are 7ft tall and athletic you may have a shot.

This is a wrestling match moron. There's no ground game so it's all about being able to manipulate your opponent. When you include chokes and heel hooks it shifts to technique a lot, at least against untrained opponents.

Fighters have far from the best genetics. They're essentially dumb and ugly enough to frick those things up even further on the hopes for a better life.

Bloated muscles with so called good insertions does not make up for poor neuromuscular connectivity and performance. An elite athlete has gone through and sustained biological changes that pitting them against a gymcel would be laughably pointless. The accomplished figher and the wrestler would kill any gym bro.
