As someone who MTB's frequently, road cycling seems boring to me. Most guys are either training for a triathlon/tour, or they just want to be gear queers and flash off their $7k road bike and brag about "team sponsorship".

MTB groups aren't much better, but at least you have to fully commit when you ride.

      Anonymous

MTB is mostly downhill and Road is mostly uphill if you do it right. Plan a good route and kill the climbs. Roadies that descend hills at like 60 mph are suicidal tards.

      Anonymous

I do both. Road cycling is fun the same way running is. It’s mostly about times and wattages except descents are fun and sketchy.

Redlining your heart and pushing yourself to the absolute limit for a pr or race is amazing. Literally nothing in the world maters for the moment except pushing.

Also I can bike down the riverwalk near me 30+ miles while listening to an audio book and it’s just a pleasant experience.

I use a stationary bike, it's much safer.

  9. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Because these guys bike at 2mph on roads in the hills and won't pull over. The speed limit is like 25+ and you come around a blind corner and see this butthole just standing there. Going as fast as I could fricking walk up the goddamn hill. Why can't the use the shoulder? We may never know. Even an 18 wheeler driver will pull over when he gets the chance. But these dickheads? No chance. You have to follow behind them at 2mph for the next 2 hours or turn around and go home and try another day.

I can bike on the shoulder. I ride on the shoulder or in the bike lane or on the sidewalk if it doesn't have too many pedestrians. Why can't these guys do it? Is their bike more important than mine? Is it the lycra? Are the helmets cutting off blood to the brain?

      Anonymous

I dunno where you are, but in my country it's highly discouraged and in some cases illegal to cycle on the shoulder especially when ascending a hill. Because a bike will naturally drift left and right while climbing and if you get passed without space it becomes dangerous. The same is true in urban settings with parked cars with doors that can be opened randomly.

Of course if you are cycling you should look for safe opportunities to allow other vehicles to pass/

        Anonymous

I figure they think it's safer but honestly, on a windy road--which is the only time I have problems with these guys--you're driving around corners and you can't see, and sometimes the road is very dusty. One stroke of bad luck is all it would take for me to come around at turn at 25mph and have a cyclist right in front of me, I lock my brakes and hit him anyway. Whereas if they stick to the side of the road I at least would be able to just swerve a little to avoid them.

          Anonymous

Sounds like you are driving too fast around blind corners. If they were at the side of the road it would be even harder for you to see them.

            Anonymous

am I supposed to drive at 2mph instead? When I ride my bike I am a vehicle and I ride around the speed limit to not hinder traffic, or I move out of the way

              Anonymous

You drive at a speed that allows you enough time to react to unknown hazards on the other side of a corner if you can't see. If the cyclist was moving faster then it would just make the hazard worse because now you have even less time to react.

                Anonymous

The cyclist isn't in the opposing lane. If they were moving faster it would give more time to react. Nevertheless you should drive at a speed that'll allow you to avoid something even if it's stopped on the road, you are right about that.

I get more mad they don't even pull over though. When I ride my bike I let cars pass, I let other cyclists pass. I don't see why if a giant truck can take the time to let traffic pass, a cyclist can't. Because I sure as hell would. Some people are just inconsiderate.

                Anonymous

If it's a twisty single lane road and there is dust everywhere then you're at high risk of hitting a cyclist when you come around a corner whatever you do. That's why I'd rather at least be central to maximize being seen and hope you aren't driving at some crazy speed. Usually I can hear the engine revving before this becomes an issue, but I worry about electric vehicles.

because poorgays live in poor places where there is almost nowhere to bike. the road infrastructure is shit, there is nowhere to go/check out, and the trails are either flat and very popular (because there aren't many of them) or very steep with roots. and if a Black person steals your bike, cops don't care. cager hits you, cops don't care.
and cagies love seething, look at this thread, because bikes are on the road. the road which bikes are entitled to share, and usually only cycle in the middle on slow roads where cagers could just dodge. it doesn't help that peds demand bike lanes which are unsafe due to a combination of the city fricking up, on roads that are too fast for comfort, and cagies not looking, so nobody uses them and the cagies see that their precious road space is now gone for lanes nobody uses and seethe more.
picrel, example of the city fricking up visibility.

In the UK it's the law that cyclists have to use the road.
But it's not required that cyclists pass a driving test.
So you have people using the roads that don't understand road signs or how to anticipate traffic behaviour at junctions.

  26. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

The biggest problem are cyclists who are willing to endanger themselves so long as they're legally in the right; a willingness to override instinct because the government said you're allowed to. Even my 16 year old self understood that it's usually better to ride on a sidewalk than be in the fricking road, law be damned.

Only poseurs feel they have to compensate for other inadequacies by spending over the odds for a pair of wheels. Apart from that, though, OP, you're right -- just head out into the countryside for fresh air, solitude, and a good pub lunch en route.
