Why do so many people only do 3 sets when you could just do 2 more and get a much better workout?

I've analysed this graph with a team of statisticians and we have determined that OP is a homosexual.

if I'm reading this right, hypertrophy increases linearly with sets done. why not do 35 sets and become Mr Olympia over night?

you're not reading it right because it only goes up to 6 and not 35. Stop being a snarky b***h and learn to read.

Why do 6 sets though if 4 gives you the same result?

i saw a chart with mode reps. After six sets on average the hypertrophy is lower than for 6 sets. just for some people it was more, prbbly roiders.
The difference between 2 sets and 6 was small so this chart prbbly doesn't start with o on y axis.

Because, depending on the rep range and weight, you'll end up having to drop the weight. I'd rather do 3-4 sets of the chest press, go do my Triceps, then go do 3-4 sets on chest flys. You're still hitting your chest with 6-8 sets, but you're giving yourself time to recover, so you can go back to a heavier weight again.

I think this is sets per week, not per session. Sets per session makes little sense since you could have anything up to 5 sessions per week.

This is sets per session, per muscle group. The general consensus is 10-20 sets for each muscle group per week. So, 5 -10 sets per session (with 10 sets being total overkill).

most of IST is full of zoomers and coomers with ADHD so they need to "diversify" their workouts or they get bored and quit.

The reality is that individual variance is all over the place. They've done studies where people where doing anywhere from 10-30 sets per muscle per week. When they told them to increase the sets per week, some people gained more and some people stalled, and it didn't matter where they started.

    >Why yes i do 3x12 with a 4th set to failure, how could you tell?

    i don't. there's quite a few exercises where i do only 2 sets, pull-ups for example.
i do 2 sets til failure, there is no point for me to do a third. it's just junk volume at that point.

X sets of how many reps anon?
It's time under tension which matters. Most people don't have time to do 4x8-12 on everything they need to do.

As long as the weight is going up it doesn't matter. Plus once you're over 40 you're not gonna be doing that much volume.

Do whatever you can progress session to session
If you can make progress on every set doing 5 sets per exercise each session then go for it.
I'd rather just take one or two sets per exercise to actual failure but you do you.
