I would choose pullups because they will give you much more of a "built" look overall when you get really good at them... big forearms, big biceps, rounded shoulders from big rear delts, bulky wide back. Plus you can make a huge argument that it is crucial for correcting the biggest tolls of modern lifestyle on the body... Many people work their jobs at a desk hunched over with shoulders and arms forward, and/or sit/relax that way in their off time. This leads to tight chest, loose/rounded/hunched back that looks bad and contributes to spinal injury, and contracted ribcage that makes for poor breathing. Privileging pressing exercises tends to make these issues worse, whereas back exercises that retract the scapula and strengthen the muscles that open the chest and ribcage up give you better breathing, better taller posture, and most of all help support the shoulders by keeping them back... one of the most common ways to injure your shoulder is loading it when it's rolled forward, which is liable to happen when you have weak/loose back and overly tight chest

I OHP 125lbs for 3 reps the first time I ever tried it... It helps to have t-rex arms... Maybe even more than bench, my ratio of OHP to bench is a lot closer than most. Just saying it's very subject to leverages like every other lift there's nothing special about it.

Because the linear progression for it sucks. I mean, who was the one who thought that the linear progression for OHP should be adding 5 lbs every week like for bench and rows? It should be 2.5 lbs per week.
1.25 pound plates are available on Amazon. I bought a pair and keep them in my gymbag. I can now do strict OHP with 225, but the progression has certainly been painstakingly slow, and full of ups, down and setbacks.
Its a helluva process.
I do have 1.25 pound plates but they're for standard barbells and I have an Olympic barbell. Can I just tie them up with a shoelace or rope and hang it on each side whenever I do my OHP?
These are for Olympic barbells. Invest in yourself and buy the right equipment. I think its less than ten bucks for the pair. Have some self fricking respect.
You can also go to a commercial hardware store (store that services industries, not homeowners - Fastenal is such a store in the US) and get washers with a 2 inch inner diameter. these will fit perfectly on olympoc bars. I bought six that weighed, i beleive, .7 of a pound each, so microloading allowed me to move up in 1.4, then 2.8, then 4.2 pound increments.

Pin presses work every time I get stuck. Usually 2 sessions then it's back to ohp.
Back off in weight but add more volume. Also do lots of upper back work. The stability there helps a ton when pressing overhead.
Probably because it's an incredibly humbling exercise and most of IST are ego lifting pajeets that half rep 2 plates on the bench.

For the past few months, every time I do OHP I get a pain in my left shoulder and only my left shoulder. I can push through it but that's obviously not a good idea. I feel it very slightly with bench as well but it goes away as long as I have good form, but ohp it's like no matter how good my form is it always hurts, even after a few weeks break. I disliked it for like the whole past decade in which I exercised, but after covid lockdowns made me take two years off, I'm actually loving re-starting from the absolute basics and getting really good at what were traditionally my "bad" lifts. I'm focusing on doing OHP with perfect form and great timing, and am finally getting up to heavier weight than I ever did in the past and enjoy the challenge of OHP (because it really is particularly difficult). For the first time ever, I have really rounded, wide boulder shoulders and all my other pressing lifts feel much better. On top of that--- for all the people who say it fricks up your shoulders--- learning how to do it right has actually alleviated all the pain/stiffness of my old rotator cuff tear and my shoulders feel a lot more bulletproof. One of the many advantages of learning dead correct form for OHP

OHP is a great exercise using dumbbells and with relatively light weights you are capable of pushing out a few reps with.
However it's a shit and dangerous exercise for weights you struggle with, that's why it's no longer an olympic lift and only morons try to get a one rep maximum of it.
You shouldnt be Olympic pressing massive weights. Olympic lifts are ego lifts. A strict press is extremely safe.

Don't know. Like others have said the progression is alot slower than other lifts, especially compared to deadlifts and squats. Personally I felt way more stoked when I hit 2pl8 ohp than 3pl8 bench.
