It's not. It's literally the only diet that has been proven to work for literally everyone besides people with rare disorders or diseases, repeatedly in experimental trials. The problem with CICO is the problem with all diets and all exercise - the person trying CICO fails, not the diet. The only part of it that is meaningfully different is that CICO almost necessarily takes the most self-restraint of any diet, and requires a lot of attention. As is known to be a fact, people who are overweight grossly overestimate their level of physical routine and grossly underestimate the amount of calories they eat, each typically by 25-30%. It's not abnormal for obese people to overestimate their amount of exercise and underestimate the number of calories they consume by as much as 70%.
The only real critique against it is that CICO is essentially the "cold turkey, you'll quit if you actually want" approach to a literal addiction. That approach works great to in terms of time to break the habit plus keeping the habit gone, but has terribly low success rate because if most people could just say, "Frick it, no more addiction," then addiction wouldn't exist.

Guy who did the twinkie diet proved this shit wrong. Calories are calories are calories when it comes to weight maintenance/loss/gain.
      https://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html
On top of that, losing the body fat literally improves all signals for cardiovascular health, despite the fact that your diet becomes completely shit temporarily while eating junk food.

It isn't. The only c**ts who think that are that one moron with his moronic rat study that merely showed that a low carb diet helped burn fat quicker than a non-low carb diet, which he then (somehow) misinterpreted to mean that CICO literally doesn't work in any way, shape, or form, even if you were starving to death.

And the other c**ts are the one's who bring long-term discipline into the equation, like as if that's somehow relevant to whether or not you will lose weight doing CICO (which you will and is the only relevant factor), and then they turn it into an argument of keeping the weight off, when that wasn't a part of the argument.

So, no, it's not a meme. Just eat at a caloric deficit and have some fricking discipline. It's not that hard.

, and I have a coworker is very salty of my progress. She keeps talking about how some people just have it oh so easy to lose weight (I'm working my ass off doing this), and how she have tried so many times and is always careful with her calories, but she's just genetically disposed to put on weight.
At the same time she drinks several ice coffee with sugar and/or flavour syrup every day, and I rarely see her move from her chair other than to go make said ice coffee. I have a hard time imagining her being more active at home.

Barring health issues CICO is tautological, particularly when it comes to weight loss. Plateaus can occur for bulking, but if you burn more calories than you eat you will lose fat. Unless you are somehow a perpetual motion machine

  14. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

CICOgays just don't get it. Eating less is only the first layer of weight loss.

  15. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

    Because
    1) the way calories are measured is moronic. Your body doesn't combust nutrients, it uses enzymes which provide different ammounts of energy than combustion
    2) proteins are almost not used for energy, they are mainly used to build muscles and bones, only some tiny ammount of the protein you don't use is converted to glucose,
    3) your body isn't a closed system. You can absorb some energy from light through the mytochondria in your skin (this is neglectable) but if CICO was so true then you'd just lose weight by being cold; calories are a measurement of energy in the form of heat (energy required to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1K)

BUT, calories do give you a ballpark figure of the energy in food. It's just very, very innacurate. Consuming less than what you require WILL make you lose fat, because your liver is constantly either storing fat or using your fat storage.
However, eating carbs and fat together is what makes people fat, because it activates the Randle cycle (picrel). Glucose (all carbs become glucose in your bloodstream) and fats compete to provide energy to cells the cell fails to absorb either because of that you have lots of unusable glucose and fats in your blood stream the liver stores it you end up hungry and fat.
It's why milk makes you big, this mechanism exists for babies to get BIG so they can have their growth spurt.

So yes, you can use calories, CICO works to some extent but it's a meme because it's a gross oversimplification and there are other, better ways to fix the problem, like not being a disgusting fat frick in the first place.

      Anonymous

Wrong pic lol, here is the Randle cycle one; that previous one was the mechanism for how fat is processed into metabolites that provide energy.

Since you then go on to neglect the fact that BMR is mostly about maintaining body temperature (why mammals need more food than reptiles), it looks like your the one who's dumb as a box of rocks and disingenuous.

            > BMR is mostly about maintaining body temperature
Sure, frick making the heart beat, balancing the electrolytes, making enzymes, using the brain, renewing cells, etc then.
You sound as moronic as breatharians, heat is a byproduct not the endgoal.
Yes your metabolism results in heat, and guess what your body also metabolises water. Guess you better stop drinking as well, moron.

Ignore the numbers. Use more calories than you absorb. That's it.

As long as your calorie counting method is consistent, you can calibrate out the errors... basic closed-loop control system.

It's not. People fail because most grossly overestimate their CO and underestimate their CI. Also you don't get long term benefits like resetting your internal hormonal weight thermostat if you keep eating, even at below TDEE.

Just fast, it's way simpler and healthier.

  20. 2 years ago

You're all missing an important point.

We can solve the energy crisis by rounding up all the magic-fats who can break thermodynamics by creating fat out of nothing. If we can burn one magic-fat, then we can use the power they expel to burn even MORE magic-fats.

Giant generators with infinite power! Turn that tax burden into a power boom!
