Because your expectations that need to be surpassed for you to be impressed have been distorted by decades of omnipresent professionally shopped images of PED users.

Because of weight classes, they have to squeeze as much strength into as little weight as possible. Hypertrophy is does greatly discouraged!

      >Because of weight classes, they have to squeeze as much strength into as little weight as possible. Hypertrophy is does greatly discouraged!
      This OP.

Martial Arts and Fighting sports have weightclasses for a reason.
Unless you're in the Heavyweight division, you're not supposed to be super buff.
Most fighters need to control their weight very precisely, to remain in the same weight division.

So you're not talking about Total Raw Power. You're talking Pound-For-Pound strength. Who packs the most punch while being the lightest weight possible.

Also MMA is a multi-disciplinary sport.
Some fighters are better at striking, some are better at ground play. Different physiques and different styles.

When it comes to other sports, they are usually very specialised. Like professional cyclists have massive legs that mog even the most rippeddudes, but are total DYEL in their upper body.
      Hyperspecialisation.
Even during ancient Greece you had people who wanted Health and Fitness out of training, and pro athletes that would compete in the Olympics and other renowned championships.

Then there's the pic you psted, OP. Basically men and women have different muscle and fat distribution. This makes female MMA fighters look weird compared to the men.
In MMA men are always fit as frick, because Fat does'nt help at all, because weight classes.
With women, their morphology is different so you get different results.

        >and pro athletes that would compete in the Olympics and other renowned championships.
*That would train only one sport to be the best at it *
        Forgot to add that.
Hyperspecialisation always occurs when you have a Culture where Pro-Athletes can exist.
So as soon as their is fame, fortune and power to be gained for professionnal sports, you will have people who will specialise in that particular sport and suck at the other disciplines.

A great example is Distance Running VS Sprint.
Look at the difference in physique between a sprinter and a long distance runner, it's night and day.
Sprinter needs muscle mass and explosiveness.
Distance runners on the other hand need to be as efficient as possible so they shed all the extra-weight to be as lightweight as possible.

So both of these people Run, but even if they are both runners, their physique differs a lot because of the context and specific skills that are required for each one.

I hope my example is a good illustration of the problem.

            >sprinters take gear runners don't
I'm not a specialist on Gear, hormones and anabolics, but once again, you're not entirely right about the subject.

Sprinters will use Anabolic Steroids to gain Muscle.
Long Distance Runners don't need more muscle, they need more endurance.
And to increase endurance you don't do Steroids, you do Blood Doping.
            >Blood doping is a form of doping in which the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream is boosted in order to enhance athletic performance.

So yes, long distance runners don't need more muscle, so they don't take anabolics, instead they increase their Cardio Efficiency and instead do blood doping so that they have increased red blood cells and increased oxygens levels.

I'm not going into anti-doping detection is sports because I'm sure it's an arms race between labs making new undetectable compounds and anti-doping agency trying to improve detection methods.

There, now you get the full picture, using Doping methods as a confirmation example of Hyper-specialization.

also mma requires learning so many different techniques that you can't really be a master of everything. some people might work their body more, some might focus more on technique.

Slow twitch mucles make you slow. Most athletes need explosive movements which need fast twitch muscles. Also the amount of muscles needed to do something difficult is overestimated because people who lift for hypotrophy are focused on gaining muscle mass for aesthetics and not strength.

Fighter physiques are impressive, they are like weight chameleons to fit the class they want to compete in.
If you look into it a bit you'll see that they carry a lot of muscle mass at lower weights but still have to work within specific weight class limits.

they often dont lift weights because it would make them grow unnecessary muscle mass in places that doesnt help them in a multiple round war.
