Why was it easy?

I've been smoking and drinking regularly for 20 years while maintaining a moderate exercise regime. I quit a week ago-- it was extremely hard in the past.... but this time it seems easy, too easy, and I have no desire to go back to it. How did this happen?

What changed since last time you tried to quit?

Two things. I have a two year old, now. Second, my new job pays me quarterly, up front-- plenty of money but it has made me more aware of budgeting and what a waste my cigarette and IPA habit is. Can those two things really make it so much easier?

My bet is you probably kept trying to quit while cutting down or taking some kind of nicotine patch, while in an environment of smokers or drinking that you couldn't control. At the same time, your relationship with smoking probably wasn't at the point where you were able to push through the nicotine addiction with willpower.

How close was I OP? Did you not drink, not be surrounded by smokers and just cold turkey it? Perhaps this time you didn't have any stressful work?

None of those things. I drink and smoke mostly by myself. I did start to taper smoking with some nicotine pouches, and after a day of drinking with my brother at the water park the other day (he doesn't smoke)-- I realized I just drank for 8 hours without a cigarette. Next morning I just stopped both.

It's all about mindset. A lot of people half ass it because they still like it deep down. Once you decide you're done you're done. That's why cold turkey is more effective.

Must be I'm just done. I've had people tell me "when you're ready just quit, it's a lot easier than forcing it"

      I guess they were right?

I quit when I had a kid as well. Used to dip and smoke/vape virtually all day. Decided I was done one day and that was it. I haven't touched nicotine in like 5 years. It wasn't easy for me in the beginning though.

I actually picked up a virus from my 2 year old he brought home from daycare-- definitely slowed down my smoking because my tonsils were swollen and sore. Maybe everything just aligned and made it easier. Still have some 3 MG nicotine pouches for emergencies.

the mental aspect is probably more important than the chemical withdrawal aspect (except in the case of drugs whose withdrawal can kill you)

being less stressed helps a lot, not needing things to cope. It also helps massively when you genuinely want to stop, and you're not just doing it because you think you should. Almost all drugs can be dropped overnight with the right perspective on yourself and your relationship with the substance.

Quit for 8 months before and each day was a struggle. This is different. Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience-- no need to be hostile, go back to /b.

Yes I had the same experience. It was very easy to quit, and very weird that I did.

nicotine is more troublesome. ive quit for 6 months several times over the year sometimes its easy sometimes its a hellish grind but i still go back because nicotine makes me feel smart when i use it.

Man, I used to smoke, and then stopped. My advice is to just stop. Everything is better, even stress. Smoking creates stress then tricks you into thinking it's being relieved. My life is a million times better without smoking.

Thinking smoking cigarrETTES was manly or cool was a marketer's trick in the first place. Doctors and israelites were the ones who first started making smoking popular
