Will excess protein make me gain weight?

I'm trying to reduce carbs and increase protein in my diet for satiety.
I don't lift or exercise (besides walking).

How much protein a day for a 177 pound male?

Depends of your lifestyle. According to educated ketogays, for sedentary it's 0.5g/kg // 0.25g/lbs a day. So 45g for you I guess.

45 grams sounds low but thanks for the input anyway

I do 0.5g/kg on normal days and double that on training days. For me the upper limit is protein farts mentioned by

The excess protein lingers in your blood until it eventually travels to your kidneys, and it decomposes in nitrogen-based chemicals. Some of it will remain in your intestines and produce the famous protein farts. Your body can use protein as an energy source if it enters in the "omfg there is no carbs/fat i can use, we must burn the muscles down" aka catabolic phase.
Also, 50% of the protein will be either used by the muscles or decomposed 8 hours after the intake, basically there is not enough time to form fat with it.

. Any additional protein is wasted then. We don't need as much as we think. Eat more non starchy vegetables.

OP is no bodybuilder, he doesn't need that. Also, if you like your protein farts, stick with them.

      This is a good thing.

How much protein a day for a 177 pound male?

170g at least, assuming you're lifting and not being sedentary all day.

      False.

OP you want high protein for gluconeogenesis to cycle you out of ketosis everyday. This keeps your thyroid functioning optimally, preserves electrolytes through the effect of insulin and keeps your muscle glycogen levels topped up for lifting.

These keto fricks who limit protein, stay in ketosis for extended periods and have no glycogen stores will end up with hypothyroidism and the T levels of old men.

Hey man this question is moronic but I will answer any way.
You will gain weight if you are in a surplus of calories. It doesnt matter if it is protein, carbs or fat.
1200 kcals of carbs is same amount of calories of 1200 kcals worth of protein.

its like asking which weighs more, a ton of feather or a ton of rocks.

Except calories from different sources have different metabolic reactions within the body.

I'll eat 2000 calories of steak per day for 6 months. You eat 20000 calories of doughnuts per day for 6 months and we'll see who's healthier at the other end.

        >Will excess protein make me gain weight?
He asked about gaining weight, not becoming healthier.
Losing weight, maintaining weight and gaining weight is just about calories in vs calories out.
Obviously to gain and maintain muscle he will need a lot of protein, but that is not what he asked.

I'm not so sure about that. Your body can't really use protein directly for energy and transforming it into fat stores is a rather involved process, thus why people will literally starve to death on anything close to a pure protein diet.

It is literally a fact that weight gain or loss is about calories in vs calories out.
You can make smarter choices like not eating fast carbs before bed or rest days that will help, but you can still lose weight by eating 1200 kcals of donuts every day as long as you are burning more than 1200 kcals a day.
