Will newbie gains let you gain muscle while eating 1000 or so calories a day?

Will “newbie gains” let you gain muscle while eating 1000 or so calories a day?

I’m 225 pounds, 6’2, really want to get rid of my belly and moobs fast. But i also want to get strong. I’m not really a food addict, I’ll be able to handle low calorie. I mostly got fat due to drinking a lot of beer and I’ve completely cut off drinking.

Is there any point in lifting until I do? Should I just take a break and do cardio only?

Not significantly at 1000 calories, your TDEE is around 2,500 calories, why not eat clean at 2,000 calories and create a bigger deficit if you want to? You're gonna feel like shit at 1,000 calories for a LONG time and it's gonna be underwhelming when/if you make it to auchwitz mode

you're not gonna get the nutrients you need to grow. even if you guzzle protein shakes and supplements.

I just want to hit about 200 pounds. I don’t plan on going to auchwitz mode just to “not overweight”. I want to lift to be strong and healthy, it’s the only kind of exercise I find fun to do. Getting shredded isn’t really my goal.

like homie just limit yourself to 1800, drink two shakes a day, eat your eggs and greens, and lift. it's not that complicated. the weight will fall off if you really are a total beginner.

Newb gains are strength gains due to improved CNS efficiency they are not muscle gains.
Obviously that doesn't mean a newb can't get bigger as well but you won't add muscle on a calorie deficit, that's impossible.

No, but your muscles will feel tighter/harder (no size increase) as long as you aren’t pushing hard, have to make sure you aren’t damaging the muscle as you won’t have the macros to grow more. You will likely gain strength but not as much as if you were bulking.

Eat low carb, high protein around 1400-1800 calories a day. As long as your insulin isn't constantly spiked from eating carbs, your body will be able to pull all the calories it needs from fat stores. Your body literally cannot tell the difference between 3000 calories from food or 3000 calories which 50% comes from fat stores. Getting your body adapted to burning body fat efficiently can take a few weeks though, during which time the inefficiency of GNG and other biological processes can cause nausea, weakness and headaches. After that you won't be able to tell a difference. You will experience the same symptoms going back to eating carbs when you've leaned out, it's temporary.

Anyone saying you can't grow muscle during a deficit is repeating broscience. Recent studies prove even experienced lifters can make lean mass gains during a deficit. Train hard, push yourself above RPE7 for every single working set and you will grow.

Did you read the study? They picked exclusively overweight non-lifters. It's not surprising at all that they gained lean mass when on a very moderate deficit. That is completely different from experienced lifters on a 1400 calorie a day diet.

From the study you apparently didn't read

          > Forty overweight [BMI (in kg/m2) > 25] young men were recruited

          > no participants were regularly performing resistance exercise nor were they regularly performing structured progressive aerobic or anaerobic training

Try it. If you completely cut off drinking and that was say... 1000kcal you might already start to lose weight. Try 1000 and see what happens. If you feel burned out/super weak after a week of that up it to 1500.
As others said eat mostly proteins, some fats, and I would center your carbs before the workout to help fuel it.

When I was cutting hard I could have a cookie or some sugary candy and it would help a ton. We are talking like 50-150kcal of carbs here.

I used to do 2 scoops (25 grams) of pure dextrose in my PWO shake. Workouts were great, couldn't even tell I was on a deficit until the glycogen ran out.
