    I tell people I can bench 315 but I havent flat benched consistently in years. I can dumbell bench 130s and incline bench 275x5 so I figure I can probably hit 315 on flat but frick bench press and frick maxing out. I like having shoulders that dont hurt all the time

      Shoulder issues from flat benching is a skill issue tbh.
      Max grip width + bouncy rep unstable rep with subpar setup = your shoulders get deservedly yeeted from benching like a clown.

      Probably not that much better if you don't train it. I don't train flat and I'm probably similar strength on incline with super long arms. Incline just feels better.

        Thats not what he meant. At least I hope so. Your 1RM is your 1RM. "If I trained for it". Yeah I could hit 4pl8 "if I trained for it" lol. No you bench what you bench. What he means is that you cant hit it in a whim meaning you cant just wing it and go put your max effort load and do it. Doing your true 1RM requires you take some days off the gym, carb up, then properly warm-up. If you bench 140kg, you dont just load up 140kg. You put 60kg, 80kg, 100k, 120kg, 130kg, then you do the 140kg. Otherwise you are asking for an injury.

        Also 1RM requires perfect technique, your preferred bar, bench, time of the day etc. But Im not gonna say I bench 4pl8 if I train for it. I can bench 140kg but if im not maxing and I have had bad sleep and eaten on a defiit I might only be able to do 135kg.

          I think he means his 1rm has to be peaked. Meaning maybe he hit 140kg a few weeks ago but it was after a big peak and taper. So rn he might come close but not 140kg.

      315 on smith machine isn't a 3 plate bench press js. Not saying you can't do 305 bench, just that it's not the same in that scenario lol

    My 1rm is 165 kg and I only ever hit it once (which also was in presence of other people in my small uni gym).
    Right of the bat with warm up on any day I could bench 145 kg for one rep.
    But if someone asks my 1rm I always assume the highest I ever managed to lift and obviously, you don't lift that on command every day.

    my 1rm is probably 210 pounds, thats what I tell people, I usually round up 5 pounds from last time I did 1rm (I do it usually once every 3-4ish weeks)
    hit 185x5 today so think thats reasonable. If I was doing it for money on a random day I'd probably try to just go for 10-20 pounds below my max and get that money
