No, but I might join the course at my gym whenever I'm not trying to build mass.

I just started. Am I missing something or is it just stretching, but gayer?

The spiritual bullshit is fricking gay as frick bro, but a lot of the yoga poses are pretty legit.
Yoga stretching is to stretching the way that compound lifting is to isolated.

the whole let's meditate and what not is garbage 100%.

There's a lot to be said about meditation but yoga is a bastardization of aryan religions. Generally oriental spiritualism is fake with a few exceptions.

I do ashtanga yoga 3 times/week and row the other 4 days. Doing yoga properly ends up engaging a lot of muscles and can lead to significant bodyweight ability gains.
Like, the only shit this guy is doing is yoga for like 3 hours/day and he's got better bodyweight fitness then most of IST.

it's because you learn to control very precise muscles while stretching others. allowing for really good muscle constriction while maintaining flexibility.
problem is you kind of have to do it for life.

There are also poses that are straight up calisthenics. Jumping back and through in vinyasas, boat pose, headstand - all are really great abdominal workouts. Some of the advanced series handstand asanas are really great for shoulders and lats.

But yeah, my only point is that yoga goes pretty far beyond basic stretching and if you go through a full primary series properly you're gonna be drenched in sweat and muscle fatigued by the end.

eh i've been doing yoga since i was a teen and one of the only issues I have is the same with calisthenics in general. There really isn't a way to progress on certain movements and/or if you have a very variable body type it's near impossible to do them.
Still did wonders for my back though.
My arms? not so much, i have amazing flexbility via extremely long stretching sessions, but it didn't actually do anything to make them larger. More so just stable.

This looks way more dynamic than what I do. I just hold asanas for 30-60 seconds and practice for about 1.5 hours 5-6x a week but nothing as advanced as this guy. Doing a full lotus from a handstand? Damn, I can't even do full lotus sitting. Do you recommend any beginner or fundamental routines for ashtanga? What makes it special as a form of yoga?

Ashtanga is interesting in that it's several prescribed sets of asanaw that each typically take a 5 breath hold with an asana between each side of each pose. It focuses a lot on flow of movement along with the breath and engaging muscles throughout the body during each pose. Here's a very good place to start.
