It's a Rippetoe quote of course. Same reason the majority of the fatasses here think you "can't" build muscle on a machine or dumbbells. Like it's straight up impossible.
Then you need to lurk more because anytime a dumbbell lift or machine is mentioned this comes up or if they mention Planet Fitness. They think the machines don't work because the magical "stabilizers" blow your physique up but then they can't even point to what the "stabilizers" actually are. They think the dumbbells don't work because "they're for pussies."
when you are starting from wimpy dyel status hypertrophy gains take longer than strength gains, you build more confidence with strength base to eventually move to doing hypertrophic exercises and not feeling like a homosexual
better advice if the goal is to get more men to lift. anyways check em
I hope no beginner ever takes advice from 99% of people here.
Machines are suboptimal because they do not do a real world pattern of movement and therefore they dont generally make you stronger at anything applicable to real world strength, IE just cause you have a strong hamstring curl doesnt mean you can squat good.. Plus, they can damage and stress your joints.
Since you didn't gain any muscle with your 4x10 1 plate bench press and 20 lb cable flies. Strength training builds muscle and if you dont think so you aren't strong. Go ahead and waste your time
You don't really need strength base for hypertrophy, High rep as long as you are exhausting your muscle fibres and recovering you'll build muscle (hypertrophy.) Legs respond better to heavy weights compared to arms and shoulders (other than with OHP.)
