I cant do pull ups yet but i will. I'm training on the assisted pull up machine. Its been quite hard so far. I weigh 175. Had the machine on 50 and 70 and 80 pounds. Got wrecked on that thing. Im trying to get 5 for 5 at 50 pounds. still can barely get 5 for 5 at 70 pounds. Also it leaves me kinda destroyed when i am done. I keep saying im gonna do different grips but i forget in the moment and just do nuetral grip. I just wanna get to the point i can do 5x5 body weight pull ups. It should also be noted that im taking short breaks in between sets also, around 20 seconds

That being said i weigh 175 and am 6 foot

Are you supposed to be able to do that without arching your back a whole lot?

          Anonymous

          >Are you supposed to be able to do that without arching your back a whole lot?
You don't arch your back at all.
You have your feet straight in front of you and somewhat forward, and don't pull in a straight line but a slight curve. Try over-gripping the bar, wrists bent over more parallel to ground, this makes the leverages easier/more intuitive. The cue is not to pull up but kinda initiating a lat pulldown, hard to explain. Might not actually touch the bar with your chest as it depends on flexibility and grip width, but that is your end position. Practice pausing each rep up there to build strength, it will be the weakest point of the pull.

      Anonymous

      Yeah it's hard.
The thing is, the better your form is the easier it is to reach 15+ with strict form because you're consistent and thus actually training your muscles, people shit at pullups have form that gets progressively worse towards failure, rep 1 and rep 15 for me looks identical except for rep speed. I am 15kg lighter than you though, that obviously helps.

The pro tip to get more out of your chin ups for arms is to use short form where you don't let your arms straighten up but keep them sort of at 45 degrees at most and just grind that shit and then squeeze and hold for time the last rep at top.

15+ with BW, haven't tested in a while.
+45lbs weighted for 8 reps going to absolute failure with the 8th being an unholy grinder.
Pronated over-grip, a bit wider than shoulder width grip, pause at top around clavicle/chest, full scapular stretch at the bottom, legs straight and slightly fixed forward.
    It's my best lift.

You might do them with shit ROM and form. 70% of the pullups/chin I see at the gym are a terrible spastic mess.
Or you might just be naturally inclined to being strong in back exercises like I am.

Deadhang around 14 when I'm fresh, usually do multiple sets of 10 in training
With bodybuilder touch and go not full lockout ROM the best I got was 27. Pullup is another exercise where I never see full ROM being done in the gym by others so I take numbers online with a grain of salt.

They are cheating themselves. Once you become strong throughout the whole ROM, pullups become a joke. Doing them at about shoulder width grip and not the super wide bodybuilder bullshit with pausing at the chest also builds a shot ton of that stringy forearm strength. Even if you can put up decent weighted numbers, just switching it up occasionally and doing BW for sets of 10-12 reps with super strict form, slow controlled descents into full stretch/dead hang at the bottom will still frick you up and give amazing DOMS.

A great way to add a half tub of yoghurt to each day or 2 table spoons of olive oil to your meal(btw semi-old oxidized olive oil tastes bad compared to fresh olive oil)

They both have a lot of healthy calories.

I fricking love pull ups. Been doing 200 to 400 a week for the last 5 years. There are better ways to train for hypertrophy but this high volume gives the strength and endurance I want for BJJ.
