From the strictly technical point of view, a calorie is a calorie, that being said - not all calories are equal, and anybody who disagrees with this is being obtuse on purpose. Take 2 completely identical people for the sake of argument. Have 1 of them eat a balanced healthy diet, and the other will only eat McDonald's. Both of them start off at the same baseline calorie intake and exercise. After 1 year, do you honestly think they'll have the exact same physique?

No, it's the quality of calories. When people say a calorie is a calorie, they either imply, or mean, that you can eat whatever you want, but as long as it fits your macros, as long as it you eat more/less than your daily energy needs, you will gain weight, and vica versa. My point is, is that while technically that's correct, in a real life scenario your body is not just made up of macros and as long as you hit them, everything is not just gonna magically be perfect.
And I'm not creating an imaginary strawman, everyone has seen those types of statements before.

I tried eating more calories for a bulk but I fricked up and now my pants don't fit. Should've stuck to the redcon1 mre lite and just drank 5 servings a day. Instead I tried eating at a buffet after every workout.
You just bulk with a progressively smaller surplus if you're body building. Once you're past your 1st or 2nd year a surplus a 500 kcal surplus doesn't do anything a 200-300 kcal one doesn't. Once you're 4 or 5 years in 100 kcal is about all you need and that's mostly for padding to make sure not accidentally at a deficit.
- Work out more. 6 hrs a week and only gaining fat? Try 8.
- Don't have untreated low T
- Try not to eat complete fricking garbage, change your macros to less fat and carbs and more veggies and fiber

I now go through bulk/cut cycles with a surplus of +300kcal while bulking and a deficit of -500kcal while cutting. Always getting at least 150g of protein per day.
I choose when to switch between bulking and cutting based on judgement, season, life events, and body fat %.
But my first cut I went to skeleton mode at 159lbs, followed by a more aggressive beginner bulk with a surplus of +500kcal per day where I gained a ton of strength.
For exercise I alternate daily between lifting and cardio.
For lifting I do a basic full-body barbell strength program with some accessories added.
For cardio I mostly just run, aiming to improve my 5k time. A good mix of longer zone 2 steady-state sessions with at least one hard cardio session per week. Though I did train up to a half-marathon in June and I occasionally do intramural sports and HIIT stair training.
I’m a married dude in my 30s so my life hasn’t changed that much. Seems like most women are nicer to me and most men treat me with more respect.
I expect I’d see a much bigge change in my social/dating life if I was in my 20s and single.

Obviously there are error bars in every estimate of every food. But if you add up all your estimates to get to 2,600 per day for a few weeks and you’re roughly staying at the same weight, starting to do the same but eating what you estimate to be 250 calories more than you used to eat will, over time, lead to you gaining about 0.5lbs per week. Adjust up or down as needed until your long-term gain is 0.5lbs per week. I aim for -500kcal when cutting and +300kcal when bulking. I agree 250 is a little narrow but the poster I was responding to was crying about getting fat.

You gotta bulk smart and slowly. 0.5 a week is good. You'll still get fat as even on a 20 weeks bulk you ain't getting 10 pounds of muscle as a natty, but at least you'll have less to lose afterwards. I usually go personally for 1lb per week as I feel better doing so and feel like I have more energy/strength at the gym, but I also have no issues cutting afterwards to reach my goals. Also, macros are super important and after several years I keep improving on my food intake and notice a huge difference.
