Smith machine bulgarian split squats

Is this variation any gayer than the dumbell option? is it worth switching?

these are brutal, give it a shot i prefer them to db personally but its more like a single leg squat than a bss because there is no stabilization involved

It doesn't feel the same to me. I do BSS with a barbell.

The smith machine version doesn't fatigue my quads and glutes at all. I am usually out of breath before they even begin to burn. Something about freeweight BSS is so much better.

I just drag a bench to the squat rack like in pic related.

Don't be a pussy and do Bulgarian split squats like they were meant to be done. With a regular ass barbell and a bench

What will you do when you inevitably fail them? There is no way to bail. Smith machine or dumbells seem far safer

        >What will you do when you inevitably fail them?
You don't, because it's an accessory lift. You aren't supposed to max them out unless you're an ego-lifting Black person.

Lets say you do 15 reps and suddenly you lose your balance and have to bail, there is no way out. High risk

You use the safety guards on the smith machine for the worst case scenario. It’s a smith machine though so you can just rack the bar at any time. Also, it’s a single leg movement so the weight isn’t that high - you can just squat it up normally with ease. Very low risk movement imo

then why the frick are you doing barbell over dumbell, whole point of barbell is overloading
          you people are beyond moronic

barbell = higher center of gravity, working your stabilizing muscles more. Why is IST full of so many fricking moronic zoomers these days?

When I was doing barbell BSS at home one day, using a flimsy chair to prop up my back leg, the chair collapsed mid-rep.

I just caught myself against the floor with my knee. No injuries whatsoever. Failing a rep during BSS isn't nearly as scary as it sounds. So long as your reps are slow and controlled, you'll easily be able to catch yourself when you fail. But if you're banging out reps wildly, of course you'll be bound to topple over at some point.

I would try one since john meadows liked them.
Dumbbells would be better for a stability focus, otherwise this should allow better mind-muscle connection(inb4 it's not real).
Normal BB variant would be in between.

Smith machine seems like the perfect use for a single leg lift where some stability is lost.

Have you ever done them before? They're completely different. Even front rack BSS don't feel the same.

Yh I did them for a while. I think they’re great. Limiting factor is strength as opposed to balance. Also you get a nice cheeky stretch on the back leg at the bottom.

Bulgarians are meant to hit stabilizers and work balance. Utilizing the Smith kind of defeats that.
