>no life, wagie job, live at parents
i wanna hike the Appalachian Trail. is it a good idea to do that or should i be looking to go back to school and get a better job and be 'responsible'? don't think I'll have time to do it if i get a real job and I won't be in better health either.
its something i wanna do before i die

Do it immediately while you have the conditions for it
ok
Let your heart be your guide. Life isnt a linear thing where you just follow a written rule book. Maybe you will meet someone and a job falls into your hands? Who knows, anything can happen
If you wait it will only get more difficult. You'll get real jobs and it'll be even harder to quit or leave a gap in your career, you'll get a wife and/or kid, you'll have a mortgage, etc. You will be old and think about how you always wanted to do it but never did.
>gap in your career
While I agree OP should do it now, this sort of a gap is the easiest sort of thing to explain on a resume.
>I took some time off to do complete a specific well defined life goal that required physical and mental dedication
It's the sort of thing that makes for a great story, people empathize with it, and it shows valuable capabilities (the dedication) which most people don't have.
my dad did the App Trail and he didn't quite finish it, the entire thing looks the exact same. At least do the Continential Divide or Pacific Crest instead
the PC is what I want to do
This too i would do the pc
I'm not really keen on east coast outdoors
PC is also on my list but not as quite just cause I love Appalachia and I like civil war history and it passes by a few battle sites, most importantly Harper's Ferry, which is why i wanna do that first.
how about you fitness dick in your mouth
just do sections of the AT if you want to that badly, I don't think the whole thing at once is worth the logistical challenge
the entire thing is the exact same forest nothing ever changes
Yup, this is definitely fitness related and doesn't belong on IST at all, no sir, not one bit
"jannies!!!! someone is slightly off topic of the board :("
little crybaby homosexual
Whoa thats a lotta Black folk! Just to be clear, I'm saying that this thread is completely off topic no matter how much you try and spin it so that it loosely relates to fitness. It doesn't belong here and reduces the overall quality of the board just like coombait threads under the guise of "sexual health" do.
It's absolutely not off topic it's a part of fitness
IST is about the outdoors and everything that goes with it
Thus would be off topic if op was asking about gear advice or something, but as it is its a fitbro discussing a physical activity, which is fitness
It would be one thing if he wanted to know what fitness routines would prepare him to hike the AT or how he could condition himself physically for an arduous process such as this. But he isn't, he's just non-specifically asking if he should do it or not. Thus, it belongs on IST.
OP here
what fitness regiments should I do to prepare?
Practice hiking. Go on hikes, varied terrain, ascents/descents. You can't really practice this stuff in the gym.
Get a hiking backpack and decent boots, load it with stuff, and start breaking your gear in. Learn to use and get comfortable with your gear.
Start doing overnight trips, then extend it to weekend trips, then multi-night trips.
frick off sperg
I accept your concession.
Now we're talking. Uphill sprints, various forms of LISS, and using a stairmaster with a weighted vest. Two stairsteps per stride to keep a good knee angle and simulate a steep incline. Start with low weights (even 15lbs feels heavy after a while) and short times, then progress both. A good benchmark is 3 miles in 50 minutes or less with 45lbs and 1000ft of elevation gain. Some stairmasters and/or treadmills have tools to track elevation gain simulated
this is way too much going way too fast for no reason
these thru trails are about long term consistency, not being a tryhard destroying your joints with a weight vest speed walking
I didnt say he has to start with speed walking. Nor did I say he has to do all of these simultaneously. I just gave him some examples of good practice and a goal to shoot for.
the way to get comfortable and good at hiking is to practice hiking with hiking gear. Not the gym with gym gear.
That'll just wear down his joints he needs to do cardio and weight training he will condition quickly on the trail the biggest thing besides that is finding a good of shoes and breaking them in before starting
What kind of autist bro science is this, you get better at something by doing that thing. You can't simulate hiking in gear through varied uneven rolling terrain with a weight vest and stair stepper.
The only way this makes sense is if op is a fat lardsack that can't climb a flight of stairs without a puff of an inhaler, in which case he has no business trying to tackle the Appalachian trail and should work on general fitness first.
Are you a fat lardsack op? If not, then just start hiking. Start with day hikes, then overnights, use online resources to find progressively harder hikes.
He should hike too but wearing full gear is dumb when you can just lift weights and simulate it you are the one being an autist thinking fitness doesn't transfer to other exercises like backpacking
Absolute powershitter bro meathead thinking the answer is the gym. Janny cumchugging sperg
was right, this discussion would get more helpful responses in IST than "hit the gym".
To OP: Unless you are a fat sack of shit (in which case get your ass in the gym), if you wanna prepare for a hike like the AT, then START HIKING. That's it. Full stop. Start small, work your way up. I've done a couple of world class hikes myself, real bucket list type stuff, and the experience makes for great memories and good stories.
Post one picture from you going outside oh wait you just larp
It's almost as if, hiking is a physical activity that requires fitness
Umm sweaty? Its saturday, /fit is monday-friday. Come back during normal business hours
Don’t forget to tip the jannies
does 15% sound good? i know they have incredibly high salaries so i dont want to stretch my wallet too thin if i can avoid it
Your a massive homosexual just thought Id let you know
Behead jannies. Launch jannies into the sun
Do it now. College will always be there, so will well paying jobs.
>t. softwaregay for over a decade
Do it and go live with the mountain people. That way you don't have to be a loser wagie.
do it while in your twenties because when you hit 30+ you should already have an idea of what you want to do in life and be hyper focused on realizing that.
Just do it. If you fix your life you probably won't have time anymore.
Just do it, life becomes very boring and monotonous later on. Do it while you the circumstances to do so.
Not only should you do it while your life isn't on track but it will also help you get your life on track
Discipline, planning, socialization, and the experience will help you achieve and give you a great story to tell schools and employers
>ts something i wanna do before i die
Im in Australia and its something I want to do eventually. Been working on my fitness now for the past 2 years. Hopefully can get things sorted to complete it in 2025
