alcohol

I never considered myself an alcoholic, nor did anyone else (maybe my wife secretly?) ... but I drank at least one bottle of jameson whiskey a week to "relax" (always at home). I always thought alcohol was only really a risk to your liver etc in gross quantities so I thought I was pretty much safe.

Then when researching the facts on the impact of alcohol on fertility, I stumbeled upon the video of huberman on alcohol. It blew my mind how alcohol has been wrecking my brain for decades. I immediately stopped drinking cold turkey 100% and this was 8 months ago. I felt sad that I had to give up yet another thing that brought me joy, but happy that I was removing something that was harming my brain (and therefore my intelligence and probability of success and health)

I am still so angry about our society playing down or completely hiding these effects of alcohol on the brain. Even school teachers told us a little but of alcohol is beneficial. Many people are complicit.

Fricking hell, I must have lost so many brain cells. Very sad and many such cases.

This was my story.

OP here. I'd say I consumed up to a litre of jameson whiskey a week. I have 18 bottles of whiskey left my kitchen cabinet that I havent touched again since 8 months ago after seeing the huberman video on alcohol induced alcohol brain damage

So far I am seeing no benefits but probably that is just the devil tempting me

The damage to the parenchyma of your brain isn't reversible, but you can compensate for it through plasticity if you lay off the sauce for a while. Also, chronicle alcohol abusers, which sadly you were, end up being b-vitamin deficient; check out Wernicke encephalopathy.

Your liver was probably fricked up, maybe book a fibroscan to see how bad it is (they'll do your bloodwork too). The fatty infiltration is reversible, but cirrhosis is not.

Alcohol is wild dude, it creeps up on people. People don't even realize they have a problem till they're yellow and hooked up to a Pabrinex infusion, genuinely.

Wernicke encephalopathy is usually seen in very heavy drinker, not "normal" alcoholics. I see people at the the hospital that drink 18 beers a day for years. Those are the very heavy drinker.

I do. I think all drugs can be useful in moderation. The issue with something like heroin is that it's difficult to use in moderation for nearly all users. Think about it. How much water should you drink a day? Only vague notions about thirst, or an arbitrary prescription of 2liters. You know, people also die of water poisoning. I say just don't drink water.

The whole thing is about knowing you always trade you drunken state for something that is not just money or in other words permanent damage on your body. That is the tribute. Teenagers and early 20s adults have more to exchange than a guy in his 30s or 40s. At some time you run out of health to exchange

        Anonymous

while that's true in the sense you are controlling what you trade, you gamble trading literally everything every day. you gamble your entire existence every time you commandeer an automobile, or pass some random stranger on the street. relatively speaking its inconsequential to drink. on the other hand it is ignorant to willingly trade your life for a short escape, when you know exactly what is being traded and in what proportions.

its up to people to decide what they do with their body mind and soul, we were given free choice. whether by some deity or force we label "god" or by fate itself in our evolutionary game of chance that we just happened to get so insanely fricking lucky in.

It makes it really hard to talk about alcohol because people with impulse control get shut down by the guys who drink "just a little" alcohol (3 bottles of vodka a week). These people dumb the whole topic down.
