Americas secret asteroid mission

Astroforge does a secret mission to asteroid that is closer to Earth than Mars

It will happen in 2024

They are going to mine gold from the asteroid

The reason for keeping the asteroids exact location secret is to keep others away while they do it.

In theory India, Russia and China could have comparable technology to USA and they could get the gold if Americans are not careful

If successful, it will be the first wholly commercial deep-space mission beyond the moon.

Such missions highlight gaps in the regulation of spaceflight as well as concerns about whether exploring the cosmos will continue to benefit all humankind.

"I'm very much not in favor of having stuff swirling around the inner solar system without anyone knowing where it is," said Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Massachusetts.

"It seems like a bad precedent to set."

WHAT? They're going to get an Asteroid full of GOLD? And there might be a race?? Oh no. That's just... fricking boring, the entire universe has so much fricking gold you couldn't stack it on earth without plunging us into the sun before you got even .000000005% of it from the extra gravity from all that mass.

Keyed-in and based. If we could go back to a gold/silver standard, we'd never run out of gold because it's in asteroids floating around.

You linked to a subscription website where we can't read the article without signing up.

Is it even profitable to spend over a hundred million dollars sending a big rocket into space just to hope to get that much back in gold?

The gold isn't even pure. It's in ore form and needs to be purified on earth.
Even if it was pure, still seems like a waste of resources just so they can bring the gold to sit in some underground vault lol human is fricking moronic.

My literal only concern with the mining of space is bringing it to earth, as we will then be displacing the balance of matter on our terra firma. It feels like a bad idea to me for this reason in ways I am vaguely understanding of but even that limited knowledge disturbs me greatly somewhere.

Well, if it's any comfort, we actually get a couple tons of new material on earth through asteroids hitting us literally every day... they usually just burn up and spray through the atmosphere or hit the oceans and sink.
