To lower my carbon footprint as an orthodox israelite I pledge one day a week to only walk places and not get into any car, and I suggest everyone do likewise.

this is the easier lent, you can basically eat fish every weekend, so be sure to stuff yourself like a moron.
pea and beans are my gotos generally. just avoid crap that imitates 'normal' food

What exactly is orthodox? Idk what the differences between Catholicism, Christianity, Orthodox non orthodox, Baptist etc are. I’d like to join a church but idk where to start.

    T. Recently returned to Christ, found God again. Went to church until age 5, stopped believing around age 12. Been over a decade since but I’m glad I’m returning.

It's the main church in Eastern Europe and the balkans.
They split from the Catholic church in the great schism in 1054.
They seem to be holding onto their traditions a lot better than us catholics anyway, they still do fasting a lot, doesn't seem to be any pozzed shit, the priests get married and have families too.

        You should ask/his/, or/x/.
It's basically all political, from political schisms between the Western and Eastern Roman Empire.
There are some belief diferencies, but they're basically there to support the political shit, Rome's Pope is Best Bishop (and has limited superpowers) vs All Bishops Are Equal.

prepare your butthole for a whole load of pangazius fillet and tuna chunks

aside from the fact that we don't accept the pope as the head of church and that our Christmas is in January, there's not a lot of difference (unless you get into autistic theological discussions on the topic of how many angels can stand on a tip of a needle at the same time)

This is the shit that confuses me and why idk that I’m going to join a church. I get so confused about this… Is it not enough that I believe in God, pray, confess to my sins, and do my best to lead a better life, living in what I think is the way God wants (which to me is spread love, practice forgiveness, shoulder hardships and struggle through them, be physically healthy, take one wife and have many kids with her, respect the planet and nature, undergo occasional sacrifices and struggles such as fasting to cleanse the body and to absolve for any sins and to show devotion, just all around being a better person)?
Can I not practice this faith in my own way, on my own?

        >They seem to be holding onto their traditions a lot better than us catholics anyway
Only in the New Order. Consult your nearest Latin Mass parish, or better yet, an SSPX/FSSP one for a return to sanity within the Church

If you are into theology, it is pretty different in interpretation at least. Catholicism is all about law, philosophy etc, when orthodoxy is more about personal mystical experience with God.

yeah I'm going to go a bit more hardcore this year. I'll do first two weeks of fish+veggies, then two weeks of vegan diet, and then I'll go vegan keto for one week before doing a total fast for seven days before Christmas.

I plan to eat a lot of canned tuna, sardines, and pangasius (that's cheap and available here in Serbia) and for the vegan part mostly beans and bread + salads. I still haven't figured out the vegan keto part (working on it) and of course Jan 1st - 6th I'll eat nothing at all. On christmas day my brother and his wife are roasting a pig so and the whole family will be there so then I'll probably get into a pork-induced coma 😀

Nta but the frick would you torture your body like that? I would collapse in the gym even if i tried this.

well, the christmas and the easter lents are kind of a tradition in my society, and people look up to you can manage to do the whole thing. It's basically becoming a vegan for a month, not such a big deal. I did it last year and it felt good to change up my diet a bit, try out new things and see if I can control my urges

I also did a five day fast this summer, and it felt really good, fixed my bloated gut, stopped the poisonous farts and made my poop go out in 3 seconds flat with almost nothing to wipe afterwards. I'll try seven days this time, and I'll incorporate it into a christmas lent because it's my peoples tradition.

It's the brand of Christianity that shills for the government of Russia. They've always acted as conscription sources for wars, like right now they're telling people they have a duty to fight in the Ukraine war. Catholics are corrupted maniacs that defended being able to bribe for sins and their entire history is them trying to subvert intellectual progress, like medicine and maths, who also sacrifice their followers to go fight for israelites like in the Crusades. They also worship people, just normal ass people and statues of those people. Protestants removed all the corrupt shit from the Catholics but Martin Luther wasn't a great guy himself and the lack of a strong, central authority caused it to split apart into dozens of minor cults like the evangelicals, who are actual israelite worshippers.

You'll seethe at this but Pew proves that christlarpers don't even know what their own religion is about. I think like 40% of Catholics believe blessing is just a symbolic gesture, when it's supposed to be literal transmutation.

All the political shit turns me off, and I feel many things are wrong. Idk that I exactly with Catholicism or Christianity. Idk that I align with any abrahamic religion. I know I’m not a Muslim, I know I’m not a israelite. I would say I’m closest to Christianity because I was baptized. But all of my current beliefs are my own which I gathered on my own, I’ve never read the Bible I’ve just gradually thought more and more and what I posted there makes sense to me as “the way.” I’ve at most read some psalms here and there, and I would like to read the Bible. But I get too hung up on the political shit like what you posted and the fact the Bible has been revised dozens of times sketches me out.

You should read it, but it would serve you well to have some background understanding if you are reading a translation as I assume you will be. The Catholic church has traded for many centuries in a sort of authority over what translations of the Bible are official and accepted. Its main Latin translation was argued about for literal centuries.

Ex soviet EO churches in general (ukraine might be the exception) are loyal to putin and the Kremlin and have been subverted by KGB agents for decades, that leaves the greek church and some other niche church in the middle east as a valid option.

        >worship normal people

no dickhead, veneration of the saints is to recognize certain people as more spiritually mature, and calling on them to intercede to God on your behalf, much like how you might ask and older sibling to put in a good word with one of your parents.

Orthodox are quite similar to the Catholic traditions including sacraments, icons, and the canon of saints (the word Catholic is also used as Orthodox baptisms in the Nicene Creed: "One holy catholic and apostolic church") but differs from the roman church in not recognising the Bishop of Rome as head of all Christians, has a partially different canon (pre schism saints are common to both but many roman saints are not Orthodox saints and vice versa) has historically used a different calendar, has a less centralized structure, and a number of relatively (to the average believer) obscure differences in services and traditional beliefs. There are many differences but Orthodox and Catholic are the main traditional denominations whereas Protestants are more reformed versions of the faith.

The roman catholics excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1054 because he refused to add "and the Son", "filioque" in Latin to the Nicean Creed because we agreed to not change it and that it completely falsifies the Trinity. Then they went full moron, there was 1204 and now they have gay priests blessing gay marriage and we are just doing the things we have been doing for the past 1900 years.
