Usually I go swimming once/twice a week to relieve my joints a little bit and to tone my stomach, nothing crazy, I start with a warm up of 100 meters mixed style and then do a pyramid (1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1) with either crowl or butterfly, pump after swimming is also insane

Not op but want to know what those numbers mean because I also started recently and want to stop being humiliated by people decades older than me

I'm guessing he means he does 100 meters, then 200 meters, then 300 meters, etc

1 lap (25 meters), 2 laps (50 meters) and so forth, rest period depends on the amount of laps that I do and how I feel in overall

I'm guessing he means he does 100 meters, then 200 meters, then 300 meters, etc

that would be an olympic level of swimming with so much volume, besides I only have an hour and a half, anything above that will cost me extra

25m laps makes more sense, and still pretty impressive to me who gets out of breath after 4 50m laps. What are your rest times when doing pyramid?

            Anonymous

depends but it's about 1 minute when I am just about to start swimming 6 laps in a row, after that it's 2 minutes and after doing 8 laps I rest for about 3/4 minutes, it's also important that I don't swim as fast as if the IRS was coming after my ass, instead I always match the pace according to how I feel, with swimming it's all about consistency and getting used to it, rush causes more problems than it helps

Thanks for the reply, I'll keep these things in mind

Not your best but it gave me a chuckle

I'm so glad you posted this.
I actually haven't went back to swimming sicne I tried a few weeks ago because of this. It made zero sense to me, I literally run multiple times a week and have zero issues, but swimming totally broke me. I know swimming uses different muscles, but it's still cardio and if I'm good at running it should translate to make me a good swimmer instead of someone who got mogged by old people.

      - Warm up 400m
      - Some sort of drill(s) 200-300m
      - Main Set: Anything you want to mix it up:
      >Pyramids up to 8 laps for quick swimming with rests between like said
      >100s freestyle with pyramid-like progression of breathing (every 2 strokes up to every 8 strokes)
      >Medleys if the pool is empty enough
      >100s of 75m chill + 25m sprint
      >100s of 75 freestyle + 25 kick only (w/ kickboard or w/o)
      >Arms only with pullbuoy
      >Distance of your choice with even pace every time
      >Distance of your choice with fixed starting intervals (eg. 100F starting every 2 minutes). Decrease time over the course of the workout to increase difficulty
      - Optional: Some benchmark of a distance of your choice or timed swims for maximum distance (could be done after the drills depending on your main set)
      - Cool down

How long does your workout take? It seems like 2 hours to me.

When I used to program my workouts like this I counted them by distance and not by time so I can only guess.
When swimming was my only form of excercise I did these workouts for ~3500m and those were 2h, probably more.
Now that I swim to complement the gym I don't plan my workouts as diligently anymore and just make them up as I go.
If my new tracker is counting correctly, an hour long workout should amount to 2000-2300m for me, depending on how beefy and exhausting the main set is.

OP here, thanks anons. Before making this thread I was just swimming freestyle/butterfly at random until I felt that it was enough for the day and then I hit the sauna, but I will now try out the way you guys do it. Also one more thing I have to ask, is the chlorine in the pool bad for your eyes in the long term if you do your swimming sessions without wearing the goggles?

Chlorine is bad for your eyes in the sense that it dries it up and makes it volnuerable for infections. Use eyedrops to avoid that

For warm up i do 20 laps of freestyle and breaststroke in a light pace, then 20 quick 10 slower breaststroke, freestyle and back, then a little bit of what i feel like, then 10 butterfly, and 2 laps underwater(or hold my breath as long as i can). Shouldn't take more than an hour

Good workout but why not work some breaststroke and fly in there every other day?

Could do some breaststroke, but I fear that fly will destroy my shoulders. I munted them playing water polo like 7 years ago and if I'm pushing myself in the gym they're as sturdy as porcelain.
Maybe a breast/fly session would be fine so free isn't hammering the shoulders as well?

No pool but I do have a summer cottage family home

I take a kayak out and attach it to me with a rope jump in the deep end around 50 feet away from my dock and then doggy paddle back to it until I can grab it (I can’t swim) but I was told swimming is based for fitness and it’s sink and die or doggy paddle back to shore and live

    I think I might be a psycho

They usually have programs built around Olympic style swimming competitions. If you want a routine just look up the Olympic swimming events and do somewhere around 50-70% of the distance of each event 5 days a week. 50-70% rule applies to almost any sport or competition. Even works for power lifting or bodybuilding. Just lift 50-70% of your maximum.

the old people that swim for hours are doing breast stroke at 0.5 kts, they also often weigh less and are fatter (more buoyant) than you
