Same for me lad. I prefer the slow steady exertion of running to the high loads of exertion when you lift.
Maybe we're built this way. Is your upper body strength naturally low?
Don't become the injured hobby-jogger meme. You need to lift to support cardio. It doesn't need to be as much as a bodybuilder or strength athlete, but it needs to be there.
yeah, unironically love the feeling of being completely trashed from a hard run, feels like I did alot, the high you get is pretty good after. Just can't run as much lately because of a gay knee issue.
The euphoria I get from a sunrise bike ride is next level honestly. I recommend the seething anti cardio shit posters try it and maybe they’ll understand.
Did some swimming earlier today, I hadn't for a while and considered switching gyms to one closer to both my place and work but without a swimming hall. Now I'm instead going to fiddle with my plans for this fall's routine to see if I can fit more swimming in. lmao.
Generally speaking yeah. Even running a quick 5k before work makes me feel much more mentally sharp than lifting. Taking care of my heart and being generally "fit" for most things is more important than being FRICKHUGE from pumping iron.
Now that the dust has settled on OP's question, let's talk running shoes
Any advice on running shoes? I tried the whole going to the specialised running store, spend the money on advised shoes and got the most horrible pain even after breaking them in. My old cheap shoes don't give me such pain but they are trail shoes so I'm looking for road shoes now.
I love cardio as well. Thought this would be blasphemous on this board. It's incredible how good you feel doing a good run that leaves you gasping for breath. I'm on muh meme bulk right now so I can't be hammering down on my knees so much and I'm wary of expending too much energy on cardio. But if weightlifting didn't make you look good and wasn't (arguably) healthy in a different way I would ditch it for cardio in a flash.
opposite for me, when i wanted to get in shape and started exercising I started running, cycling and bought a treadmill and absolutely hated every second of it, I thought being fit just wasn't for me. Then I joined a gym and picked up heavy weights for low reps and loved it
>I started running, cycling and bought a treadmill and absolutely hated every second of it
Maybe you overpaced yourself? It's very easy to go too fast on all these things and as a result you can't sustain doing it for a longer time. For example, when I'm cycling I really have to force myself to not cycle too fast.
I do both and I love both. However, nothing beats the feeling of cycling for a while and feeling like you're on drugs or something. I've also started running and it's lots of fun as well.
when I started really getting into trail running I did it so much that I sent myself to the hospital with heart attack symptoms.
... I was over-training.
Yeh I love running more than anything. I am currently trying to add weight lifting to support the runs. Building a base through winter.
The only thing that gets me through the gym tedium is the knowledge it will help me come race season.
Also I enioy looking at the girls in gym gear. They dont look at me as im a DYEL runner but its still fun xD . I feel i need a PT to show me how to properly Squat and DL as I feel really self conscious and most be doing it wrong. I struggle with Bar+40kg
I dunno, basically all 7 high school varsity cross country runners had 5k's at that speed or lower. Running seems to be one of the more inflated sports, since it's accessible to everyone, whereas not a lot of out of shape people do powerlifting or oly lifting competitions.

what's your height weight? I've only managed to do 20m30s a 3 mile, but I'm 6'3, around 190lbs and smoke at least a pack a day.

I played sports since I was little, so my cardio system was always in good form.

In high school I would reckon I was around 140lbs 5'10''. Now I am about 5'11'' 150lbs, 23 years old. I ran a 16:58 in high school. If I pushed myself now, I could probably hit around 17:45 or a little faster.
Looking at a lot of people on these threads training for 5k's, I always notice people training for distance and endurance. In a high school practice, about 60% of our work consisted of hill sprints, repeats, fartleks, and tempo runs. I think a lot of adult amateurs are lacking these workouts, especially since they're a bit more technical to figure out without a coach, and they are extremely uncomfortable (prone to cramps, nausea, headache, etc).

I see, well you're comparing amateurs to semi pros.people that never played sports in their lives.

Hence it's important to get context about training load, age, weight, etc. Though I must admit I'm a bit overcompetitive and critical of myself/others.

I mean, the only way I'm running sub 20 is if I drop 30lbs or stop smoking, and that ain't happening. So good job anon, godspeed.

If you're buff you should try out the 400m. It's really fun. I always liked going fast more than going long.

Pretty good then, you might be lacking long speed-work if you can't break the ~18 minute barrier. Do some hard 1 mile runs at about 5-6 minute pace. You want to push yourself to where you are out of breath/nauseous.

yeah this is my first time taking it seriously its been tough doing speedwork alone i wish i had running frens thanks for the advice

Yeah look for a local running club if you can, running with teammates both faster and slower than yourself helped me a lot when I was competing. The feeling of charging out on an open field like a squadron of cavalry was exhilarating.
I get my cardio FROM weight training
Moderate weight
Max 30 seconds rest bewteen excercise
Max 1 min break bretween sets
1 super rest of 3 minutes at the half way point
Might be because you're a poofter mate
*gets out of breath walking to the shops*

I'm slightly stronger than the average bloke, but that's not saying much. But I'm closer to the 'otter-mode' end of the spectrum.
Depends what I'm doing. Repeats are pretty miserable, whereas trail running is comfy.
Don't become the injured hobby-jogger meme. You need to lift to support cardio. It doesn't need to be as much as a bodybuilder or strength athlete, but it needs to be there.
Never been a fan of most forms of cardio, its just boring to me. I do go on hikes often though which keep me more engaged and am in pretty good shape.
yeah, unironically love the feeling of being completely trashed from a hard run, feels like I did alot, the high you get is pretty good after. Just can't run as much lately because of a gay knee issue.
supplement with calisthenics
The post run high is immaculate
The euphoria I get from a sunrise bike ride is next level honestly. I recommend the seething anti cardio shit posters try it and maybe they’ll understand.
Me. If i have to choose between cardio and weights i pick cardio every time.

If you have good form already, hokas (clifton, speedgoat, etc) are nice. Get the wide sizes if you have wide feet.
I like Merrell Barefoot and Altra Superior shoes. I can an ultra in Salomons and it was a terrible mistake.
u have to try the barefoot run. do 1 barefoot per month and u will have feet like an elephant

It's funny, I am the opposite, I like lifting more, but find cardio far more useful.

kek, how much did you run?
Every other day. Ranging from 3-15 miles. I was also climbing with my coworkers for at least 2 hours 3 times a week.
Yeh I love running more than anything. I am currently trying to add weight lifting to support the runs. Building a base through winter.

what's your 5km times bros? I got down to a 21:39 3 mile recently which is ~22:22 5km. About killed me though.
18:23 for the 5k, 5:14 for the mile, tryna break those wgmi!
damn anon, you rank in the top 8% runners of the world
lol no im slow af
I'm pretty sure you're not, anon.

I love both but honestly nothing beats a good mountain ride or an early morning bike ride in the fog. Trail running is loads of fun too

Yeah it always surprises me how few IST users seem to know about this. I guess lifters just hate being out of breath.
I get enough cardio porkin' your mom.
if your not working cardio into your routine your an idiot no point in building mussels if your doing nothing for the one mussel that keeps you alive.
I like jogging and hiking in my zero drop wide toe box sandals and doing barefoot hill sprints. Hiking is more fun that lifting for sure.
