I hate deadlifts. I just do one set a week to see if I have improved. If the rest of my lifts are going well then my deadlift has gone up. If my deadlift hasn't gone up I change the movements for my back and legs.

If you feel pressured into pulling weights that are too heavy consider doing Deficite DL or other variations they can be a lot of fun without the added stigma of powerlifting.

If you are not deadlifting there is literally no point in going to the gym anon. There are plenty of variations to choose from but you absolutely need to DL or your body will break down after a few years of lifting. You need a strong posterior chain or you will end up with a fricked up back. Many such cases, just pick up a barbell once in a while it is not that hard anon.

This was me. Working towards six plates. Hurt back during random deadlift workout in 2008. Completely killed my hips and athleticism. Back hurts every day since lol. Can you do bent over rows with a barbell? That would be my second choice after deadlifts. Cable Rows would be better than that, but I only have a home gym.

Deadlifts are extremely overrated but I'm glad RDL's are getting attention now - they very effectively address the posterior chain mobility issues that are ubiquitous in modern life and were criminally underrated for a LONG time.

I have also hurt my back in the past, but avoiding the things that hurt you will keep you weak. The people are right, learn proper form, learn to brace, start from the very bottom and slowly work your way up, I'm sure you can do a rack pull from above knees with an empty bar, slowly up the weight and lower the bar. Get a coach, learn to brace, learn to hinge. Become strong, then you will not have to fear back injuries.

Exactly this. OP I am 50yo and have three herniated disks. It was only after I continuously did deadlifts and squats, not crazy weight, with solid form did my back pain go away. Training the areas where you suffer is imperative to healing

Double overhand is the conventional way of doing deadlifts. If you mean mixed, mixed is the cope way that isn't sufficient for regular training

1 hand with the palm towards you, the other with the palm away. Don't use wraps. 15% of your total strength is grip strength. If anyone tells you to use wraps or a belt they are a homosexual.

Just rest for a month or so then start deadlifting again with lighter weight, deload so to speak. then you build up weight with progressive overload.

I stopped doing them for a year, did other stuff instead.
Recently started doing them again and they're pretty great. If I had to choose one of the big 3 I'd do for life I'd choose deadlift, squat is easily replaceable, same for bench press.
But deadlift? Eeeeh you can do it but it does a lot.
